Etiquette Awareness

Tips, suggestions and stories...

Things to keep in mind as you interact with others

"Etiquette is not about being 'stuffy.'   It's about putting yourself forward in the best possible way, using courtesy and respect for others as your guide, while still allowing your own personality to shine!"

Do you ever ask someone for help, input or advice? Does a client or customer ever provide you with feedback? What do you do in response?

Hopefully, you let them know you appreciate their actions.

Whether the comments are good, bad or ugly, you need to respond because they are only half the transaction; your acknowledgment is needed to finish things up. The other person is waiting for some sort of recognition, even if it is a simple "Thank you".

A few weeks ago I shared with you the story of waiting for a table in a restaurant while at the same time watching the servers standing around chatting instead of hustling to do their jobs. I had a very nice conversation with the manager and at her request, forwarded that particular newsletter on to her. To date, I have not received a response.

I would have been willing to give the establishment another try, as the food was enjoyable and the service, once we were seated, good. But not anymore. I'm not after a gift certificate, or even an apology. However, I would have appreciated a "received your email", let alone a "thank you".

Remember...

If someone takes the time, effort and energy to respond to you, be courteous and acknowledge this. They are well aware when you don't, and your response -- or lack of -- has a tremendous impact on their impression of you. It may also affect your bottom line.
