"Hey, are you the etiquette lady?"

When I hear things called out behind me I don't turn around as they usually aren't directed at me -- and I've embarrassed myself too many times in the past. But this one -- this one I figured was definitely for me.

The woman who was speaking had attended one of my classes at Clark College within the past year. She recognized me, receives my newsletter (said she loves it) and just wanted to say hi.

Wow. What an impact. I had been having a lousy few days and to be recognized in such a way really cheered me up. To be complimented was even better.

This chance meeting happened a couple of months ago but the effects have stayed with me. This woman went out of her way to say hello, and she really showed me that one of the nicest things that can happen to a person is to be recognized. Thank you, Kay, for teaching me this lesson first-hand.

Remember...

If you see someone you know or have met, say hello! It's not necessary to think so much about your appearance, what you will talk about, and all those other details. Simply offer a friendly greeting, remind the person where you met, if need be, and wish them a good day. You are telling that person she made an impression on you ... and that is powerful, as we all want to be remembered.

It might be the nicest thing to happen to him that day.
