Etiquette Awareness

Tips, suggestions and stories...

Things to keep in mind as you interact with others

"Etiquette is not about being 'stuffy.'   It's about putting yourself forward in the best possible way, using courtesy and respect for others as your guide, while still allowing your own personality to shine!"

How do you stand? Not on any particular issue, but in terms of your posture. What's it doing for you? What is it saying about you?

Not only is good posture better for your health, it is also more attractive. Keeping your head up, chin level and ears even with the shoulders allows people to see your face and therefore, your expression. You are smiling, aren't you? Push your shoulders back, pull your stomach in, tuck your backside under -- project a strong and confident attitude.

Place your feet shoulder width apart on the floor, hands relaxed at your side, not clasped in front of you at chest level (the Hail Mary position) or low in front (the protective fig leaf). Avoid fidgeting with your clothes, your hair, jingling the change or keys hiding in your pocket. Put away your mobile device! Be ready to reach out and shake hands with ease.

Don't shlump around with your head down, shoulders caved in, feet shuffling nervously, doing your best to avoid eye contact and with your hands clasped tightly around your body or shoved deep into your pockets. Who wants to talk to a shlump?

Your stance -- your positioning -- is a way in which to draw people in. Make it work for you.

Remember...

The human body is capable of over 7,000 movements, most of which we cannot control. Be aware of those you do have command over. Body language is a non-verbal form of communication, and while you may not always be aware of the message you are sending, others may be picking it up.

Are they reading what you really want to say?
