At 1000 years of age, the oldest living rose in the world is believed to be growing on the wall of the Hildesheim Cathedral in Northern Germany. The wild dog rose is the city of Hildesheim's symbol and according to legend, the city will remain prosperous as long as the rose continues to bloom. The legend gained credence during World War II, because within weeks after the 1945 bombing that leveled the cathedral, the rose grew new shoots.
