GardenLife Sneak Peek
This Week's Radio Show

Saturday, January 15
8-9 PST, 11am-Noon EST

Tom Shappie

Tom Shappie from WaterRounds will explain about putting rings around your garden plants and the importance of incorporating them into our landscapes.

His products are basically non-eroding watering basins which save "time, work and water". Gardeners are able to water plants much faster because they're able to fill the round quickly like a bucket and the water soaks into the root zone. While this can also be done with dirt berms, the Rounds save the time of constantly rebuilding as the dirt erodes. WaterRounds products "funnel" water and nutrients deep into the ground enabling the plant to establish a substantial and healthy root system. Call Sharon, John, Bryan or our guest with your questions at 1-866-606-TALK (8255).

Get Spectacular Tomato Production!

See the difference: this photo shows a non-grafted 'Big Beef' tomato plant (left) grown right next to a Profusion™ Grafted 'Big Beef' tomato (right). Each plant was pruned to two leaders and planting time and care were identical for both tomatoes. Grafting vegetables to vigorous rootstock can have amazing results!

Plants supply will be very limited in 2011. Order now for shipping on your choice of the weeks of March 28, April 18 or May16. GardenLife is proud to be able to offer 10 varieties of single grafts and 4 combinations of double-graft tomatoes.

DID YOU KNOW?

Chicken manure is one of the richest animal manures in N-P-K, but should be composted before using in the garden to avoid burning your plants. Recently, Chinese researchers have found another use for poultry droppings. When they added chicken manure to oil-contaminated soil, it increased bacterial growth as well as accelerated the biodegradation of petroleum pollutants.

Wlid species - Sainpaulia velutina

In the late 19th century, Germany controlled most of East Africa and had stationed many officers to oversee its territory including a young German army captain, Baron Walter von Saint Paul-Illaire. Probably because his father was a longtime patron of the botanic garden at Herrinhausen (in Hanover, Germany), the captain was also interested in botany.

World's Most Expensive Tomato!

Pachino - Pride of Sicily

Money is not a deterrent to many tomato aficionados. If you're looking for some of the sweetest, firmest, shiniest tomatoes with a long shelf life to boot, you need the small, red, juicy cherry tomato from Pachino (pa-keeno), Sicily.

Plants are very hardy and will overwinter in mild winter areas. It is also one of the hardest varieties to find as farming conglomerates in Sicily tenaciously guard the distribution of the seeds.

We only have 60 plants available and this is the first offering specially for our newsletter readers.

GARDEN TIP:

Using Seeds or Plants

Decide whether you want to

grow from seed or from

young plants. If using seeds,

you'll need to start them

indoors a couple of months in

advance. The young plants go directly into the ground

 immediately after the last frost.

Check out these seed companies:

Botanical Interests

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds

Ferry-Morse Seed Co.

Landreth Seed Co.

For great veggie information check out expert Steve Goto's website.
