Quote of the Week
"If a man walks in the woods for love of them half of each day, he is in danger of being regarded as a loafer. But if he spends his days as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making the earth bald before her time, he is deemed an industrious and enterprising citizen." ...Henry David Thoreau

| DID YOU KNOW? | |

Although "solstice" means "sun stands still," winter solstice actually occurs when the earth's axial tilt is farthest away from the sun and marks the first day of winter as well as the shortest day and longest night (in the Southern Hemisphere, it is the beginning of summer). For 2010, the winter solstice is on December 21. Rome's feast of Saturnalia and Medieval Britain's Yule Log (to melt the heart of a frigid winter) were ancient celebrations of the winter solstice. Today, hanging strands of twinkling lights, decorating Christmas trees and preparing feasts for friends and family extends throughout the month of December, including the winter solstice.

Sharon Asakawa's Poinsettia Care
| |

Since the majority of potted poinsettia plants are greenhouse grown, follow a few guidelines to maintain their optimum beauty through the holidays. And despite rumors to the contrary, poinsettias are not harmful to children or pets. According to the national information center for poison controls, POISINDEX, a 50-pound child would need to eat 500-600 bracts before experiencing digestive problems.

GARDEN TIP:
Using Seeds or Plants
Decide whether you want to
grow from seed or from
young plants. If using seeds,
you'll need to start them
indoors a couple of months in
advance. The young plants go directly into the ground
immediately after the last frost.
