DID YOU KNOW? |
The tradition of two people kissing under the mistletoe was probably begun in the 18th century. It is also used by herbalists and in South Africa, Afrikaans chew the berries until sticky, form strands and coil them around tree branches to capture small birds. Named after Viscum album (European mistletoe), the species is endemic throughout most of Europe, but in the U.S., Phoradedron flavescens is harvested for holiday decorations. Mistletoe plants grow on many types of host trees, typically reducing the host's growth, but if the infestation is heavy enough, mistletoe can kill them. Most mistletoe seeds are spread through bird droppings that stick to twigs. ________________________________________________ |
