Why do World Cup skiers change skis in a race?
World Cup skiers are now allowed to change skis in certain events.
In most events they are not allowed to. This is a relatively new rule to add another level of excitement for world cup viewing.
During the length of a 50km or 30km the ideal wax may change. Skiers can choose to change skis or stay with what they have. Much like a pit stop in car racing.
The wax techs are allowed to work provide substitute skis that the athletes switch into.
Doing a ski change takes skiers a few second extra so some athletes elect to change to get faster skis or better kick while other may elect to stick with what they have and save precious seconds.

What: 4000 American cross country ski enthusiasts backing their nation's developing skiers on a single day.

How: There are two ways to be involved. The most impactful involvement is to become a Drive for 25 Ambassador and get at least ten of your friends to agree to donate on November 15th. Send the email addresses of your friends to us and we will remind them.
To be a Cross-Country ambassador contact
Matt Whitcomb mwhitcomb@ussa.org
To be a Nordic Combined ambassidor contact
Dave Jarrett djarrett@ussa.org
or donate $25 on November 15th.
Cross-Country Page or the Nordic Combined Page
Why: U.S. cross country skiing is in financial trouble. While we have improved from a nation that seldom put a single skier in the top 15 on the World Cup to a nation with World Cup and World Championship podiums we are currently operating at a budget of less than a tenth of our toughest competitors. And more importantly our budget shortfalls are making it impossible for our younger developing athletes to afford the racing opportunities they require to compete among the best. This summer we have faced two rounds of budget cuts and another is looming. This challenge offers the cross country community a chance to pull together and keep the momentum building.
Who: You!
NNF, the National Nordic Foundation is stepping up to fill these budget short falls. The NNF depends on you.

Start's Answers to Waxing Questions
Man Made Snow Wax?
I will be skiing on man-made snow at the alpine area until real snow gets here. If the snow does not come early we even race on man-made snow. Are there any tricks to glide waxing for artificial snow?
Man made snow is very course and has a very high water content and often the water source is dirty so the snow is dirty. So you need a durable wax, that manages moisture and dirt. Start's Black Magic Glide Line has over 20% Fluor + Moly and is perfect for man-made snow.

Start's SD3 one Hot Pole!
"Since they're wound in a 3-D process, Start's SD3 are strong where most poles are weak-down by the aero baskets-and stiff where most poles are soft, in the midshaft." Outside Magazine
Outside Magazine selected Start's SD3 as its "Hot Pole."
