Hooking the Jaws

The Current State of The Middle East (Part 1)

And the word of the LORD came to me saying, "Son of man, set your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him and say, `Thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am against you, O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal. "I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them splendidly attired, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them wielding swords; Persia, Ethiopia and Put with them, all of them with shield and helmet; Gomer with all its troops; Beth-togarmah from the remote parts of the north with all its troops--many peoples with you.

Shalom in Christ Jesus,

Be Alert!

Ed. Note: In this alert, I will be introducing and using a number of new, different and unlikely news sources than I have not in the past. Some of these are Russian, Iranian and other Middle Eastern press and media organizations, which are typically controlled by their state. In addition to the usual Israeli news sources, I will also be adding some sources from newer American news sites (some politically conservative but others very left-wing) that I pray will add to our understanding of current world events. (I say this up front, as a caveat to prayerfully consider as we should always do with every "news source" even if those writers beliefs lines up exactly with our own - we should always hold everything up to Scripture.) I have been digging around quite a bit as the MSM (mainstream media) and what used to pass for good alternative news sources are growing towards hype and propaganda. The goal here is not to give comprehensive coverage but to help fill in the gaps, perhaps the missing pieces of 'why now' this is happening.

Please keep in mind that all the systems of the world including the media are under the control of the Prince of the Power of the air. The reporting and all media literally travel through his realm now. We must realize all is corrupted to some degree, be "wise as serpents and innocent as doves" and view all things through the Word of God. My prayer is that this collection of articles, many from sources that I would typically not use or have not used in the past will help give us a broader perspective.

For many years, those of us seeking to understand Biblical prophecy have watched The Middle East knowing that passages such as Ezekiel 38 & 39 have yet to be. We have witnessed the loss of interest within the church about these things, and strangely enough a growing interest in "the end of times" in the secular world. Now many from that time have turned from their hope in Christ's soon return opting to put it in the things of this world. We have come to a time of continuous turmoil in The Middle East and the fulfillment of Jerusalem being a cup of trembling and a burdensome stone to the entire world. Yet, with each day more professing believers refuse to acknowledge the significance of the events transpiring. The bright side for those of us who believe the Word of God is that the harvest is indeed plentiful. We must be prepared that as with the harvest at Jesus first coming, the one before His second coming will be marked by much martyrdom.

Regarding the current situation in Syria, I have a sense of unease and distrust of all sides involved, especially in terms of what is reported to us by our media. Certainly, it has always been this way, but our society is locked in this "vise-grip" of darkness and confusion by a certain and lingering implicit trust that when it comes to issues beyond our borders, they will report truthfully. Without any real investigation by this media, whose job it was to do just that, how are we to actually know if what our governing officials are telling us is true?

As each stage has unfolded, especially since the terror attacks of September 11th, 2001, and even more so since the "Arab Spring," the foreign policy and rationale of our perspective governments, their alliances and leaders makes less sense with each passing day. The nebulous "war on terror" has done nothing but to destabilize and terrorize the entire Middle East. This strategy is one that has been openly communicated by individuals connected to the US State Dept. and UN for years and involves using war, government/commercial marriages and various means of deception to remake the global landscape to bring about a so-called new world order (how I hate having to use that term).

However, what bothers me the most and what is likely overlooked is that in every country that The US and our NATO partners have entered, whether it be Afghanistan, or Iraq, or where our long arm has exerted influence for "change," is that the Christians are being pushed out. And if they do not leave these new found "democracies," created by "The Americans" they face martyrdom. At the same time, Israel, the one and only country that does give believing Christians and all people, even Muslims, freedom in The Middle East, is consistently marked as the aggressor. When Jesus returns what county will have the most Christian blood on its hands? China? North Korea? Russia? On the other hand, could it be America, because we have steamrolled one dictatorship after another or used our CIA and black ops to create terror organizations to overthrow legitimate governments and leave power vacuums in other countries. In either case, Christians in those countries have it far worse than they did beforehand.

This does not mean that The Lord does use these sorts of things to bring His will to pass. It seems very evident by His Word that He does. However, all parties will be held accountable for their actions. Yet, very little of this result is owned up to by our government or has been reported in any fashion by our media. Additionally, the majority of Christians in America and the West are woefully 'ignorant' of this bloody and deadly consequence of their government's actions on their brothers and sisters in Christ

Concerning this we must distinguish between the corrupt political leadership, a fascist world economy involving huge multinational corporations in bed with national governments - and the individual performing the noble and Scriptural duty of defending ones family and country or perhaps trying to effect some political change for good. We also need to see how the pieces are falling into place for the lawless one to step into power because of utter desperation of people continually trodden down by governments and militaries from all sides.

One striking conclusion from the reports below and from other recent ones is that jihadists and Islamists currently (and in the past) benefit most from American actions. That is if they are "going along with the program." If not, we apparently "take them out," these days with a drone strike. This entire scenario does not mesh with the 'war on terror,' nor does its result seem to bother our leaders in Washington. If I were part of any government in The Middle East, especially Israel, I certainly would not trust the foreign policy of the USA, even with all the recent Congressional measures to punish Iran and support Israel. Moreover, Christians in The Middle East should beware any military moves by America; the outcome for you in every recent situation has turned out worse.

That said, successful leaders do not just suddenly go off "half cocked" and start killing their own people for "no reason" like the Western government officials and media like to portray them. Even though these countries are made up of many tribal factions that typically despise each other, in the past strong dictators kept the peace. I do not approve of how these men ruled but that is why Saddam Hussein, Mubarak, Gaddafi and Assad remained in power so long.

According to International Law (UN Charter VII: Article 51), it is legal for Assad to protect his country. The question would be why has one government after another in The Middle East been toppled and why? This is a very complicated issue and can obviously not be addressed with one simple alert. It is also imperative to remember that events in the world that surround Israel and the church are happing because they must happen and that Scripture will be fulfilled. This is not because of some sick and perverted Futurist mindset of the Bible believing Evangelical, but because our Omniscient God saw the end from the beginning, He saw the future before it happened and had it written down by men of God.

Putting together a picture from all the various reports, one picture sees the Western alliance as trying to keep as much "controlled chaos" as possible on the ground in The Middle East while a plan is in place to strengthen the Sunni states and install Sunni governments where they currently do not exist. This is a duel plan to cut off Iran and to deal with the global banking crisis according to various analysts. This also keeps the Saudi's happy, which sometimes I think is the foremost goal of Washington.

Another report below from PressTV of Iran states that Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq are those arming the group 'Free Syrian Army,' and that a week before the attack that took out four Syrian cabinet members a warning was given to "defect or face death." It is amazing to see the players of Biblical prophecy moving much more onto the main stage of the world. Does anyone else find it bothersome that while actual major events happen around the world, here in the West and especially in America we are assaulted with the usual celebrity beak-up or make-up gossip and nonsense that passes for news? It has become almost essential to go to the foreign press for world news coverage and we must praise The Lord for the Internet.

In the midst of this mix of events is the Magog alliance mentioned in Ezekiel 38-39, and the current situation may be just what it takes to "put hooks into your jaws." Just in the last year or so we have already witness a reshaping of the map that follows the Scriptural picture with changes in Egypt and Libya and that reshaping continues.

As always, my prayer is that this alert will help to give some insight as to what is taking place from both the natural and spiritual perspective and to remind us to view all things through the lens of Scripture.

May the Lord bless and keep you,
Scott Brisk

Islamic fighters flocking to Syria
al-Qaeda Flag
THE TORONTO GLOBE AND MAIL [(Thomson/Woodbridge 85%, Bell Canada 15%)] - By Patrick Martin - July 21, 2012
In the 1980s, it was Afghanistan to which international Islamic fighters came, helping the mujahedeen successfully take on the Soviet army and its puppet regime in Kabul. Then came Bosnia in the 1990s and Iraq in the 2000s, in both of which veteran jihadists fought a sectarian war on behalf of outgunned Sunni minorities. In 2012, they're flocking to Syria.
With funding from private organizations in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait, they are making their way across the frontiers from Iraq and Jordan, hooking up with opposition elements in Syria and taking the battle to Damascus and the heart of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Money from Qatar is helping finance the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood and the fledgling Free Syrian Army (FSA). And United States CIA operatives are reportedly helping distribute weapons and matriel to the mainstream opposition forces. However, the international jihadists, many of them so-called Salafists linked to al-Qaeda, have agendas of their own that don't stop at forcing Mr. al-Assad from office. To them, the real target is Shiism, the religion of Iran, and the crescent of Shia forces that Tehran has promoted that stretch from Iran to the Mediterranean.
Many Sunni Muslims, and certainly Salafi jihadists, view Shia Muslims as heretical and the Alawite sect of Shiism, (the sect to which the al-Assads and many other powerful Syrians belong) as positively diabolical. As such, it is not out of the question that ethnic massacres of Alawites would take place in the aftermath of an Islamist victory in Syria. To escape such a fate, many Alawites would take refuge in the sect's heartland in the northwest of the country where the al-Assads have built up defences.

"Unless Assad can hold out in the northwest, the Alawites will have little role in a post-Assad Syria," says Barry Rubin, an Israeli analyst and author of The Truth About Syria.
The thought that outside jihadists could dominate the country's agenda following the Assad regime's demise even worries the FSA, said a former senior Syrian official this week.

Should Sunni Islamists take power in Damascus, Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Shia political movement and militia in neighbouring Lebanon, will be the next target. With the loss of the Assad regime that has been the group's No. 1 arms supplier, and with a new regime favouring the Sunni powers in Lebanon, it will be a challenge for Hezbollah to maintain its position of strength.
After that, the Saudi-backed jihadists will look east, to Iran and its ruling Shia interests in the oil-rich Iraq that sits between Syria and Iran.

In the case of both Lebanon and Iraq, Syria, caught up in post-revolutionary chaos, will be an ideal staging ground for jihadist operations against Iran and its Shia interests.
"We're looking at a region-wide schism between Sunni and Shia," says Alastair Crooke, a former MI6 operative and author of Resistance: The Essence of the Islamist Revolution, "and the ultimate battle for supremacy will almost certainly be in Iraq."

The sectarian fighting that wreaked Iraq in the wake of the U.S.-led invasion nine years ago will pale in comparison to what is to come, says Mr. Crooke. Al-Qaeda of Mesopotamia, the group once led by the late Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, is alive and well in Iraq, and attacks on various groups of unarmed Shia pilgrims earlier this year are just a taste of what may follow an Islamist victory in Damascus.
For its part, neighbouring Israel, to the south of Syria, has already become worried about jihadists on the Syrian frontier.

Israel's military intelligence chief, Major General Aviv Kochavi, told a parliamentary committee this week that Islamic militants have taken advantage of the chaos created by the Syrian civil war and moved into the southern part of Syria adjacent to the Golan Heights.
Israel captured the heights in the 1967 Six-Day War and has occupied them ever since.

The intelligence chief told Israeli lawmakers that a power vacuum may create an opportunity for staging anti-Israel operations, such as those recently carried out from Egypt's Sinai desert.
"The Golan area is liable to become an arena of operations against Israel in much the same way the Sinai is today, and that's a result of the increasing entrenchment of global jihad in Syria," Gen. Kochavi said.

Is Syria Falling into the Hands of Al-Qaeda?
GATESTONE INSTITUTE (Formerly "Hudson Institute, New York") - By Khaled Abu Toameh - July 27, 2012
The "Arab Spring" in Syria, which began as a popular and non-violent uprising against Bashar Assad's regime, has been hijacked by Al-Qaeda and other radical Islamist organizations. ...
Many of these armed extremists who appear every day on Arab TV stations have made no effort to conceal their aspiration to establish an Islamist caliphate in Syria.
The men who are fighting against Assad's army are anything but reformists and democracy-loving activists. Most appear to be ruthless terrorists and militiamen who came to Syria to carry out suicide bombings and massacre innocent civilians.

These are the same Al-Qaeda members who have been waging a war of attrition against the Iraqi government - and before that the United States - and who are still trying to take control over Yemen.
Palestinians who fled the fighting in Syria this week said that the some suburbs of Damascus were full of Al-Qaeda militiamen from a number of Arab countries. Others said that many fighters belonged to radical Salafi groups.
The Palestinians said that the Muslim fundamentalists stormed the Yarmouk refugee camp near Damascus and began recruiting young men to join what they described as the jihad [holy war] against Assad's regime and all "infidels."

The jihadists already have their eyes set on neighboring Jordan. Once they get rid of Assad, they will move on to hijack the "Arab Spring" in Jordan in the hope of replacing the monarchy with another Islamist state in the region.
Of course the Sunni jihadists do not represent the entire Syrian opposition, which still includes many secular figures who are struggling to create a democratic and secular regime.
But what is clear now, is that whoever replaces Assad would not be able to ignore the fact that Syria has been swamped with thousands of Al-Qaeda and Salafi terrorists who pose a threat to stability in the Middle East. ...

Monitor group says jihadists claim Syria attacks
ASSOCIATED PRESS - July 4, 2012
BEIRUT - Shadowy militants claimed dozens of attacks across Syria, including some carried out by suicide bombers, a group that tracks jihadist chatter on the Internet said Tuesday.
The SITE monitoring group cited statements by the Al-Nusra Front on jihadist websites claiming the attacks were to avenge the killings of Syrians by the regime of President Bashar Assad.
Syria's widening insurgency has raised fears that Islamist extremists are playing a larger role in the fighting.
Among the dozens of attacks that Al-Nusra claimed throughout the county was one last week on a pro-regime television station that killed seven people. ...
It said the attack sought to make the station "taste from the cup of torture and fill its mouth and the mouth of every media official from the henchmen of the regime with bitterness, and to wonder: When will my turn come?" ...
Al-Ikhbariya [TV Station] is privately owned but often acts as a regime mouthpiece.
Little is known about the Al-Nusra Front, and the statements could not be independently verified. The group has claimed past attacks in similar posts.

Forests fires, a mark of jihad
Turkish firefighters battle blazes 'deliberately started' on Syria border
ASSOCIATED PRESS - July 4, 2012
Turkish firefighters are battling blazes along the border with Syria in areas where thousands of Syrians have crossed to flee the fighting in their country.
Mehmet Harbi, a forestry official, claimed the fires were "deliberately started" at four different points on the Syrian side of the border and spread to Turkey because of strong winds. Turkey's state-run TRT television said Syrian forces were believed to have started the fires to deny shelter to rebels along the border area. Harbi and TRT provided no evidence to substantiate their claims. ...

Al-Qaida turns tide for rebels in battle for eastern Syria

THE GUARDIAN [Guardian Media Group, UK] - By Ghaith Abdul-Ahad in Deir el-Zour - July 30, 2012
In his latest exclusive dispatch from Deir el-Zour province, Ghaith Abdul-Ahad meets fighters who have left the Free Syrian Army for the discipline and ideology of global jihad

[...] [T]hese were not average members of the Free Syrian Army. Abu Khuder and his men fight for al-Qaida. They call themselves the ghuraba'a, or "strangers", after a famous jihadi poem celebrating Osama bin Laden's time with his followers in the Afghan mountains, and they are one of a number of jihadi organisations establishing a foothold in the east of the country now that the conflict in Syria has stretched well into its second bloody year. ...
According to Abu Khuder, his men are working closely with the military council that commands the Free Syrian Army brigades in the region. "We meet almost every day," he said. "We have clear instructions from our [al-Qaida] leadership that if the FSA need our help we should give it. We help them with IEDs and car bombs. Our main talent is in the bombing operations." Abu Khuder's men had a lot of experience in bomb-making from Iraq and elsewhere, he added. ...

Abu Khuder had been an officer in a mechanised Syrian border force called the Camel Corps when he took up arms against the regime. ...
He soon became disillusioned with what he saw as the rebel army's disorganisation and inability to strike at the regime, however. ...
"When we attacked the base with the FSA we tried everything and failed," ... they couldn't injure a single government soldier and instead wasted 1.5m Syrian pounds [14,500] on firing ammunition at the walls."
Then a group of devout and disciplined Islamist fighters in the nearby village offered to help. They summoned an expert from Damascus and after two days of work handed Abu Khuder their token of friendship: a truck rigged with two tonnes of explosives.

Two men drove the truck close to the gate of the base and detonated it remotely. The explosion was so large, Abu Khuder said, that windows and metal shutters were blown hundreds of metres, trees were ripped up by their roots and a huge crater was left in the middle of the road.
The next day the army left and the town of Mohassen was free.
"The car bomb cost us 100,000 Syrian pounds and fewer than 10 people were involved [in the operation]," he said. "Within two days of the bomb expert arriving we had it ready. We didn't waste a single bullet.
"Al-Qaida has experience in these military activities and it knows how to deal with it."

After the bombing, Abu Khuder split with the FSA and pledged allegiance to al-Qaida's organisation in Syria, the Jabhat al Nusra or Solidarity Front. He let his beard grow and adopted the religious rhetoric of a jihadi, becoming a commander of one their battalions.
"The Free Syrian Army has no rules and no military or religious order. Everything happens chaotically," he said. "Al-Qaida has a law that no one, not even the emir, can break.
"In the beginning there were very few. Now, mashallah, there are immigrants joining us and bringing their experience," he told the gathered people. "Men from Yemen, Saudi, Iraq and Jordan. Yemenis are the best in their religion and discipline and the Iraqis are the worst in everything - even in religion." ...
"[Al-Qaida's] goal is establishing an Islamic state and not a Syrian state," he replied. "Those who fear the organisation fear the implementation of Allah's jurisdiction. If you don't commit sins there is nothing to fear."

Religious rhetoric
Religious and sectarian rhetoric has taken a leading role in the Syrian revolution from the early days. This is partly because of the need for outside funding and weapons, which are coming through well-established Muslim networks, and partly because religion provides a useful rallying cry for fighters, with promises of martyrdom and redemption.
Almost every rebel brigade has adopted a Sunni religious name with rhetoric exalting jihad and martyrdom, even when the brigades are run by secular commanders and manned by fighters who barely pray.
"Religion is a major rallying force in this revolution - look at Ara'our [a rabid sectarian preacher], he is hysterical and we don't like him but he offers unquestionable support to the fighters and they need it," the activist said later.

Another FSA commander in Deir el-Zour city explained the role of religion in the uprising: "Religion is the best way to impose discipline. Even if the fighter is not religious he can't disobey a religious order in battle."
Al-Qaida has existed in this parched region of eastern Syria, where the desert and the tribes straddle the border with Iraq, for almost a decade.
During the years of American occupation of Iraq, Deir el-Zour became the gateway through which thousands of foreign jihadis flooded to fight the holy war. Many senior insurgents took refuge from American and Iraqi government raids in the villages and deserts of Deir el-Zour. ...

Conflict between Muslim sects on the rise

WND [WorldNetDaily] - By Joseph Farah - February 22, 2012
WASHINGTON - Saudi Arabia, the leader of Sunni Islam, is making an increased effort to aid the opposition to the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad, an Alawite whose tribe is an offshoot of Shi'ism, according to a report in Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.
The Saudi kingdom sees the Syrian regime as a threat to the other Arab countries in the region due to its close ties with Iran, which is the bastion of Shi'ite Islam.
The Saudis fear that Iran is instigating Shi'ite minorities in the various Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, to demonstrate against their Sunni rulers. For the Saudis, the Shi'ite minority is a majority in an eastern province of the kingdom where much of its oil production takes place.
As a consequence, Riyadh sees any insurrection in this province as a challenge to its very existence.

Informed regional sources say that the Saudis continue to assist an opposition whose ranks are increasingly being bolstered by the Sunni Syrian Muslim Brotherhood and now are encouraging elements of al-Qaida from Syria's neighbor, Iraq, to join forces with the opposition.
Such assistance has been backed publicly now by Pakistani-based al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who similarly is encouraging al-Qaida cells in predominantly Sunni provinces bordering Syria to launch attacks against the Syrian regime.
Al-Zawahiri has issued a similar call for al-Qaida cells in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.
Sources say that al-Qaida was behind the recent car bombings in Aleppo, Syria, which always has been a haven for al-Qaida and was tolerated by al-Assad, until now.
The West, including the United States, backs the opposition. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, along with her European Union counterpart, Catherine Ashton, called for supporting forces opposed to al-Assad.

While Clinton said the assistance will be in the form of humanitarian aid and looking for ways to strengthen the opposition - a euphemism for providing arms and money - former U.S. officials who pressed for U.S. action in Iraq in March 2003 also are calling for money and arms assistance to the opposition.
One such person is Elliott Abrams, who was Middle East adviser on the National Security Council under former President George Bush.
"The question now, really, is who is going to win - the Russian, Chinese, Iranian side backing Hezbollah, backing Assad? Or the other side, which includes the Saudis, the Turks, the Europeans, the Arab League, the GCC and us?" Abrams asked.

He was referring to the recent veto by Russia and China of a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Syria's violent reaction to the opposition, whose members also are shooting at the Syrian military.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Levrov said that the resolution didn't call for a halt to the shooting by the opposition, which has received arms from outside the country and is being joined by the Syrian Free Army, Syrian military forces who have defected to the opposition took their arms with them. The GCC is the Sunni Gulf Cooperation Countries which, in addition to Saudi Arabia, include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Abrams emphasized the opposition needs financing and arms "right now."
With Russia backing the al-Assad regime, however - and there is no indication that it is going to stand down from that support - U.S. involvement against the Syrian regime in yet another Middle East conflict reinforces concerns among analysts of a renewed Cold War with Moscow.
Such U.S. involvement also has another possible outcome: It arguably aids al-Qaida and the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood in their quest to spread Islamist militancy across the Middle East and North Africa. ...

"Quote Approval"
Latest Word on the Trail? I Take It Back
Media Monkeys
See, Hear, Speak, No Evil Media?
NEW YORK TIMES [NYTimes Group/Sulzberger] - By Jeremy W. Peters - July 15, 2012
The quotations come back redacted, stripped of colorful metaphors, colloquial language and anything even mildly provocative.
They are sent by e-mail from the Obama headquarters in Chicago to reporters who have interviewed campaign officials under one major condition: the press office has veto power over what statements can be quoted and attributed by name.
Most reporters, desperate to pick the brains of the president's top strategists, grudgingly agree. After the interviews, they review their notes, check their tape recorders and send in the juiciest sound bites for review.
The verdict from the campaign - an operation that prides itself on staying consistently on script - is often no, Barack Obama does not approve this message. ...

Quote approval is standard practice for the Obama campaign, used by many top strategists and almost all midlevel aides in Chicago and at the White House - almost anyone other than spokesmen who are paid to be quoted. (And sometimes it applies even to them.) It is also commonplace throughout Washington and on the campaign trail.
The Romney campaign insists that journalists interviewing any of Mitt Romney's five sons agree to use only quotations that are approved by the press office. And Romney advisers almost always require that reporters ask them for the green light on anything from a conversation that they would like to include in an article.
From Capitol Hill to the Treasury Department, interviews granted only with quote approval have become the default position. Those officials who dare to speak out of school, but fearful of making the slightest off-message remark, shroud even the most innocuous and anodyne quotations in anonymity by insisting they be referred to as a "top Democrat" or a "Republican strategist." ...

Jim Messina, the Obama campaign manager, can be foul-mouthed. But readers would not know it because he deletes the curse words before approving his quotes. Brevity is not a strong suit of David Plouffe, a senior White House adviser. So he tightens up his sentences before giving them the O.K.
Stuart Stevens, the senior Romney strategist, is fond of disparaging political opponents by quoting authors like Walt Whitman and referring to historical figures like H. R. Haldeman, Richard Nixon's chief of staff. But such clever lines later rarely make it past Mr. Stevens.
Many journalists spoke about the editing only if granted anonymity, an irony that did not escape them. No one said the editing altered the meaning of a quote. The changes were almost always small and seemingly unnecessary, they said.

Those who did speak on the record said the restrictions seem only to be growing. "It's not something I'm particularly proud of because there's a part of me that says, 'Don't do it, don't agree to their terms,' " said Major Garrett, a correspondent for The National Journal. "There are times when this feels like I'm dealing with some of my editors. It's like, 'You just changed this because you could!' "
It was difficult to find a news outlet that had not agreed to quote approval, albeit reluctantly. Organizations like Bloomberg, The Washington Post, Vanity Fair, Reuters and The New York Times have all consented to interviews under such terms. ...
The Obama campaign declined to make Mr. Plouffe or Mr. Messina available to explain their media practices. "We are not putting anyone on the record for this story," said Katie Hogan, an Obama spokeswoman, without a hint of irony. She pointed to the many unrestricted interviews with campaign officials every day on television and when the press corps travels with the president. ...

Both presidential campaigns are keenly aware of what can happen when they speak too freely. Damaging sound bites can live on in the news cycle for days. Mr. Obama's remark last month during a televised news conference that "the private sector is doing fine" landed almost immediately in attack ads. And Eric Fehrnstrom's "Etch A Sketch" comment on CNN, about softening some of the harder positions Mr. Romney took during the primaries, continues to haunt the Romney campaign five months later.
Reporters who have covered the Obama presidency say the quote-approval process fits a pattern by this White House of finding new ways to limit its exposure in the news media. ...
Modern White Houses have long had "background briefings," gatherings of top officials who speak to reporters under the condition that they are quoted anonymously. With time, the restrictions have become broader, often bordering on the absurd. ...
Under President Obama, the insistence on blanket anonymity has grown to new levels. ...

The White House's latest innovation is a variation of the background briefing called the "deep-background briefing," which it holds for groups of reporters, sometimes several dozen at a time. Reporters may paraphrase what senior administration officials say, but they are forbidden to put anything in quotation marks or identify the speakers.
The White House held such a briefing after the Supreme Court's health care ruling last month with officials including Mr. Plouffe, Mr. Carney and Dan Pfeiffer, the communications director. But when reporters asked to quote part of the conversation, even anonymously, they were told no. Even the spokesmen were off limits.

Conference on Syria ends in Stalemate as Russia Hangs Tough Against US/NATO -
Endgame is MicroStates, MiniStates, Partitions
PRESS TV, Iran [Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting] - Transcript of interview w/ Webster G. Tarpley, Ph.D. - June 30, 2012
PressTV has conducted an interview with Dr. Webster Griffith Tarpley, an author and historian from Washington, to further discuss the issue. The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Looking at the rights record of the participants of the meeting in Geneva, particularly that of the United States, it's somehow hard to believe that their only concern is of human rights. Can you tell us how a regime change in Syria may benefit every participant in that conference?

Tarpley: The current US policy under the Obama administration with Hillary Clinton in the State Department aims at the destruction of all sovereign states on this planet. It's really rolling the world situation back to the time before the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 which established the regime of modern independent sovereign states.
The desperation of the US and the British comes from their financial bankruptcy, and what they've got to do is increase the rate of exploitation and looting and sacking of the entire world economy. In the course of this, they find that any national government is an intolerable obstacle. It gets in their way.
It can say no, like Mubarak said no to them on numerous occasions and Gaddafi said no most of the time, so they decided to smash up these countries. But notice their goal is not just regime change: it's now microstates; "ministates", to use the terms of Zbigniew Brzezinski; "partition", the favorite term of George Soros; balkanization, failed states, rump states, warlords - warlords of the type that we see for example in Libya.
This is the goal, to have a situation where the International Monetary Fund and NATO rule the world from above but then on the ground you've got a kind of crazy court of petty, squabbling, impotent little entities that could never resist Exxon Mobile or JP Morgan Chase or Halliburton or anything of the kind, something, again, like Libya today.
That's where they're headed to this. It would be for them to break up Syria, to detach the Kurdish part, to detach parts that would be claimed by Turkey, to perhaps start the Lebanese civil war again, perhaps there would be a continuous civil war in Syria, perhaps Israel will start helping itself to various tracts of territory, and so on down the line. So that's where this is going. It's very sinister. ...

The Guardian Exposes NATO Networks Spreading Lies Against Syria
PRESS TV, Iran [Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting] - Transcript of interview w/ Webster G. Tarpley, Ph.D. - July 13, 2012
PressTV talks with Dr. Webster Griffin Tarpley, author and historian from Washington, regarding the issue. Below is an approximate transcript of the interview.

In an interview regarding who benefits from the massacres of innocent civilians in Syria ...

Tarpley: [...] I would also urge people to go back and look at recent cases. There was a massacre in the Hama area in April which has now been attributed to the rebels, not to the pro-Assad forces. In Houla, we have the large massacre at the end of April. The United Nations official Paulo [Srgio] Pinheiro has already conceded that there is no evidence at all that was done by Assad forces.
We have also got John Williams of the BBC with a memo which has been not widely circulated but he says that the BBC coverage of the Houla massacre was completely without basis and evidence; it was based on propaganda from the opposition groups.
And we have got the most authoritative the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, leading conservative newspaper in Germany, that pretty much categorically states the Houla massacre was carried out by the Free Syrian Army and other related groups.
We have also got the fact that when the Houla massacre occurred, the BBC posted a photograph which actually showed a massacre by US forces in Iraq almost 10 years before and they put that up. It had been the work of Marco Di Lauro of Getty Images.
So the eagerness of the Western media to portray massacres, I think, betrays who actually carries these things out. It is done under the auspices of NATO.

Press TV: You spoke of the Free Syrian Army. We have the Opposition or the Free Syrian Army openly saying that it will use assassinations to reach its objectives. Why when it is openly speaking of using force and aggression is the opposition not condemned, neither by the US nor the UN?

Tarpley: This of course reflects the hypocrisy of Hillary Clinton, [William] Hague, [Laurent] Fabius and others; ... anybody killed in Syria is automatically a victim of Assad.
There are no exceptions and this is really Orwellian because, at the same time, we know that there are armed gangs, death squads, in Syria; al-Qaeda members are armed by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey under the supervision of CIA case officers.
I would urge people take a look at The Guardian of the UK; look at that website today. There is an excellent article by Charlie Skelton and Charlie Skelton in this article goes through who the Syrian opposition is and one of the people that he talks about is Mr. Rahman of the Syrian observatory. ...

Fake online editorial fools New York Times
AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE - July 29, 2012
The New York Times, which famously insists on the accuracy of its reports, was red faced Sunday after being fooled by a hoax online editorial posted under the name of ex-boss Bill Keller.
The editorial, titled "WikiLeaks, a Post Postscript," was purportedly published over the weekend by the Times and in every way appears to be the real thing from Keller, who until last September was the paper's executive editor.
The article appeared on a web page built to replicate the Times' popular website, right down to perfectly working links to the rest of the site.
It was so realistic that none other than the newspaper's technology editor Nick Bilton posted the link on his Twitter account, calling the apparent defense of Julian Assange's controversial organization an "important piece."
Not so. ...

#NBCFail: Journalist at The Independent has Twitter account suspended after complaining about NBC's coverage of London 2012 Olympics
THE INDEPENDENT, UK [Alexander & Evgeny Lebedev] - By Guy Adams - July 30, 2012
On Friday afternoon, like every resident of America, I was not watching the Olympic opening ceremony.
Instead, I was sat at home, quietly fuming at the fact that NBC, the US network which purchased rights to the entire Games, had come to the conclusion that it would be a good idea delay broadcast of this global news event until the evening prime-time, roughly nine hours after it had finished.
This being the era of Twitter, I did not have to suffer in silence. At around 2pm, I began posting a series of messages complaining about the company's hugely-cynical policy. One of them suggested that frustrated viewers voice their complaints to Mr Gary Zenkel, the President of NBC Olympics. ...
Later that afternoon, I was invited on the Los Angeles talk radio station KNX 1070 to discuss the absence of live coverage of the ceremony. If I remember correctly, I declared myself "utterly outraged" during that two-minute interview, saying with only a hint of understatement that NBC was: "treating the people of America with contempt." ...
Yesterday morning, I wrote a short article for The Independent about the growing criticism of NBC's Olympics coverage, which has resulted in network TV viewers being shown almost no high profile events live, while commentators made a series of basic factual errors - among them, calling Luxembourg "a small, central European country."
Shortly after filing that article, I attempted to check my Twitter account. When I logged on, I was presented with a message saying it had been "suspended." If I had any questions, I was asked to click on a link and fill in an online form.
This morning, I heard back from Twitter. In what was apparently an automated email, I was told that: "Your twitter account has been suspended for posting an individual's private information such as private email address." It then contained a copy of my Tweet regarding Mr Zenkel. ...

Kremlin Propaganda Boss Lashes Out - Praises Huffington Post, Iran's Press TV
WASHINGTON FREE BEACON - By Staff - July 30, 2012
Margarita Simonyan, the editor in chief of the Kremlin's worldwide, English-language Internet-video propaganda channel RT, has given an interview to Russian news site Itogi.
In the interview, available only in Russian, Ms. Simonyan says of the network "we fully agree with the foreign policy of this country [Russia]."
She explains the mission of RT as shouting down the "multi-million choir" of the Anglo-Saxon media.
While deriding cable news competitors like Sky News and Fox, Simonyan welcomes other state-owned media outlets like Iran's Press TV and China's CNC World as allies in Russia's information war against the West.
Simonyan also praises the Huffington Post and Alyona Minkovski, the Moscow-born anchor of RT's Alyona Show who recently announced her departure from the Kremlin-run channel for a new Huffington Post venture HuffPost Live. ...

Spoiling for War on Syria
WAR IS A CRIME.org > Stephen Lendman's blog - By Stephen Lendman - February 25, 2012
Nearly a year ago, Western-backed insurgent violence erupted. Heavily armed foreign fighters supplemented internal ones. Al Qaeda's very much involved.
Russian and Chinese peace initiatives are spurned. Washington, rogue NATO partners, and pro-Western regional allies want conflict.
Reports suggest Jordan's hosting 40,000 heavily armed insurgents along Syria's southern border ready to intervene. Former Libyan Al Qaeda commander Abdelhakim Belhadj commands nearly half of them.
Iraqi fighters are massed to Syria's east, ready to join them. So are so-called Free Syrian Army insurgents north in Turkey. ...

The UN Charter's Article 51 states: "Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defense if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, ...  Not only does international law support Assad, he's obligated to defend his people under armed attack. ...

However, attackers bear burden of proof. For nearly a year, Syria faced Western-backed violence. Confronting it's essential to restore order.
In contrast, under no circumstances, with no exceptions may one nation, NATO, or other combination of nations intervene against another without Security Council authorization. Doing so is illegal aggression, a lawless act of war. ...
Western-backed aggression rages in Syria. Likely escalation's planned. Under UN Charter provisions, the Security Council's obligated to confront it, not Assad. He and nonviolent Syrians are victims, not villains.
In Libya, responsibility to protect (R2P) humanitarian intervention was cover for aggressive war. Tens of thousands died. The country was ravaged. Out-of-control violence still rages. Perhaps similar strategy is planned for Syria. ...

In addition, UK/CIA/MI6 operatives train insurgents and provide active support. UK and Qatari troops are involved. Heavy weapons and munitions are supplied. US Special Forces and foreign troops are positioned along Syria's border. Perhaps they've already entered covertly.
Fifty Turkish officers were arrested in Syria. They were secretly organizing opposition forces. They admitted being trained by Israeli Special Forces to help destabilize Assad's government. Others may also be caught in the act. Reports suggest Saudi Arabia and Qatar are paying anti-Gaddafi insurgents $1,000 monthly to fight Assad.

A Final Comment
With Western aggression likely, the wild card is will Russia and China intervene. Both countries reject foreign interference. They call for peaceful conflict resolution. Instead, it's escalating toward all-out war. ...

C.I.A. Said to Aid in Steering Arms to Syrian Opposition
NEW YORK TIMES [NYTimes Group/Sulzberger] - By Eric Schmitt - June 21, 2012
WASHINGTON - A small number of C.I.A. officers are operating secretly in southern Turkey, helping allies decide which Syrian opposition fighters across the border will receive arms to fight the Syrian government, according to American officials and Arab intelligence officers.
The weapons, ... are being funneled mostly across the Turkish border by way of a shadowy network of intermediaries including Syria's Muslim Brotherhood and paid for by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, the officials said.
The C.I.A. officers have been in southern Turkey for several weeks, in part to help keep weapons out of the hands of fighters allied with Al Qaeda or other terrorist groups, one senior American official said. The Obama administration has said it is not providing arms to the rebels, but it has also acknowledged that Syria's neighbors would do so. ...

View from Magog
Syria/Libya: What is really going on?
PRAVDA - By Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey - June 6, 2012
[...] after unleashing a massive terrorist attack in both countries, using foreigners armed by the west and digging up trouble among disaffected elements with axes to grind. The mainstream media has ominously gone silent since Houla was outed as another western mail-order massacre...
The truth of the matter is that inside Syria, as was the case in Libya, crimes against humanity are being perpetrated by the terrorist forces unleashed by ... France, the UK and US. These include disaffected internal elements with axes to grind among the populations with endemic questions to resolve against the leading groups, foreign mercenaries and Al-Qaeda elements working for the West.
As in Libya, such elements are being used to create humanitarian catastrophes which can then be blamed on the Assad government in false flag events - to date they have not worked simply because Libya was an eye-opener and the alternative media are alerted to their demonic schemes. ...
As in other theaters, the problem is not Sunnis and Shia, it is posed rather by fanatical Wahhabist elements, as we saw in Chechnya. Take Houla for instance, where the massacre was blamed on the Syrian Government forces by a lying and irresponsible western media and the cynical forces pulling their strings, in turn controlling the terrorists who perpetrated it to create a false flag event justifying a humanitarian" invasion based on a devil-you-do, devil-you-don't approach (if the Government perpetrated it, then the invasion is justified; if the Government did not, then it has lost control, cannot protect the citizens and the invasion is justified: heads I win, tails you lose).
The ones who committed the massacre of Houla were elements of the Ar-Rastan, the Al-Farouk brigade of the so-called Free Syrian Army, led by Abdul Razak Tlass. Where is the process for his extradition to the ICC? Where is the process for the terrorist leader Saad Hariri, head of the treacherous Future Movement (Tayyar al-Mustabbal), whose Wahhabists took part in the massacre? Those massacred were Allawites, close to the government. ...
The Russians knew what was going on, why didn't Clinton? Why didn't Hague? Why didn't the French, UK and US? ...

Gold for Oil
Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Turkey skirting Iran sanctions by trading gold for crude
WASHINGTON FREE BEACON - By Adam Kredo - July 12, 2012
Turkey has exchanged nearly 60 tons of gold for several million tons of Iranian crude oil, despite its promises to uphold Western sanctions on Iran's energy sector, according to recent Turkish reports.
By using gold instead of money, Turkey is able to skirt Western sanctions on Iran's oil trade, particularly those pertaining to SWIFT, the global money transfer service that until recently assisted the Central Bank of Iran and other Iranian financial institutions.
Over the past several months, Turkey has given Iran 60 tons of gold, or more than $3 billion, according to a July 8 report on the Turkish news site Vatan Online. The report was translated by the Open Source Center, a translation service used by the CIA. ...

"The idea that Turkey needs a waiver for more time to disconnect itself from the Iran oil trade is ludicrous," said Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon adviser on Iran and Iraq. "Turkey is playing Obama for a fool."
"Like a loose school girl, Obama may think he can become popular by giving away the goods to whomever tells him he is the apple of their eye," said Rubin, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. "Obama doesn't understand that for regional rulers like [Turkish Prime Minister] Erdogan and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, he has gained not respect, but disdain." ...
Gold payments to Iran have been taking place "for some time," state the Turkish reports, but have peaked in the past few months as global sanctions against Iran continue to choke its economy. In May, Turkish trade with Iran hit an unprecedented high at $1.7 billion, a leap of 513 percent, according to Turkish statistics and various reports.

Turkey, which is the fifth largest importer of Iranian oil, exported more than $3 billion worth of gold to Iran in the first five months of this year, according to data compiled by the Turkish Statistical Institute and reported on by Today's Zaman Online, an Istanbul-based news organization; others estimated that the price could be even higher.
... "The mass purchase of Turkey's gold is being undertaken by rich Iranian families living in Turkey," Today's Zaman reported on Tuesday. "There are rumors that they purchase Turkish gold via third persons in order not to be noticed, and that they entrust the purchased gold to the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran, again via third persons."
Transfers to Iran account for the majority of Turkey's gold exports during 2012 and have come at the Iranian regime's request, the reports show.
The Vatan Online report also revealed that Turkey's Halkbank "converts [Turkish] money into gold and either delivers it to the officials of the Central Bank of Iran in an armored vehicle at the border, or sends it to Iran through cargo mail."

The payments for both oil and natural gas are a sign that Turkey is cozying up to Iran and moving further from its Western allies.
"It would be laughable if it weren't so tragic: Everyone but Obama knows that Turkey and Iran are cheating," said AEI's Rubin. "Heck, if precedent informs, than Erdogan himself-or at least the son-in-law to whom he often directs contracts-is probably making a handsome profit on trade." ...
Turkish officials have denied the charges that the government trades gold for oil.
"The whole payment is made in the form corresponding agreements signed between the two parties," Taner Yildiz, Turkey's Energy and Natural Resources Minister, told Iran's Fars News Agency this week.
Yildiz maintained that only cash is used to pay Iran.

The Goldman-Sachs Obama Putin Connection

Bank of Putin:
Goldman Sachs lobbying against human rights legislation
WASHINGTON FREE BEACON - By Adam Kredo - July 19, 2012
Goldman Sachs bank appears to have paid a prominent D.C. lobbying firm $100,000 to torpedo a human rights bill that would deny U.S. visas to, and freeze the assets of, Russian citizens involved in human rights abuses, according to lobbying disclosure forms.
The D.C.-based Duberstein Group Inc. was hired by the financial giant to lobby against the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act, named after the Russian lawyer who was tortured and killed by Russia officials after discovering a $230 million embezzlement plot.
The human rights bill is favored by a bi-partisan coalition of lawmakers in both the House and Senate, but has quietly been opposed by the Obama administration as a threat to its policy of "resetting" U.S.-Russia relations. The Russian government has threatened to scuttle cooperation on a range of issues if the Magnitsky bill becomes law.

Congressional sources and Russian human rights activists expressed confusion over Goldman's apparent opposition to the bill, and chastised the scandal-plagued megabank for kowtowing to the Kremlin. ...
Other experts were surprised to learn that Goldman-the Obama campaign's largest Wall Street donor in 2008, and the president's second largest donor overall, giving more than $1 million to the campaign-was actively lobbying against a measure meant to protect innocent Russians and crack down on money laundering.
"There is something troubling about a business lobbying against Magnitsky," Anna Borshchevskaya, assistant director of the Atlantic Council's Patriciu Eurasia Center, told the Free Beacon. "It raises questions about whether this company cares about promoting good business practices, or whether [it wants] to ingratiate itself to the Kremlin at any cost."
Congressional sources observed that the Obama administration has long lobbied against the language, arguing that it would anger Russia and harm trade relations, ...

The administration hopes to weaken the final bill so that the language is less offensive to Russia, insiders said. The Senate version of the bill broadens the language to include all nations, while the House version singles out Russia.
The U.S. trade relationship with the Kremlin has experienced renewed tension in recent months, following news that Russia was on course to be accepted into the World Trade Organization. In order for American companies to take full advantage of Russia's membership, the Kremlin must be granted "permanent normal trade relations" with America, a designation unachievable under Jackson-Vanik. ...
The bill would prevent Russian officials involved in human rights violations from sending their children to U.S. schools, buying U.S. real estate, and otherwise benefiting from American commerce and markets, experts said. ...

Big Russian fleet nears Syria. Iran to fight regime change as foreign forces pile up
DEBKAFILE - July 25, 2012
Russian, Western and Arab forces were piling up on Syrian borders ... bringing closer a war confrontation which could spur the Assad regime into making good on its threat to use chemical weapons against "external aggression."
Based on this reading, Moscow added its voice Tuesday to that of US President Obama and warned Bashar Assad against using chemical weapons in view of "its commitments under the international convention it ratified prohibiting the use of poisonous gases as a method of warfare."

DEBKAfile's military sources: With operational intelligence deployment and electronic stations positioned inside Syria, the Russians are better placed than any other outsiders to know what is happening on Syria's battlefields. Their warning must therefore be tied to solid information confirming Washington's assessment that Assad is dangerously close to deciding to use his chemical and biological weapons in a way that would precipitate a regional conflict.
Israel, Turkey and Jordan would be the first targets on his list.

The immediacy of the peril, DEBKAfile's military sources report, has speeded the arrival of Russian warships to Syria to counter a potential Western, Arab or Israeli assault on the embattled country.
The Russian Ministry of Defense, which rarely discloses Russian military movements outside its borders, announced ... that a fleet of Russian warships had passed through the Strait of Gibraltar and entered the Mediterranean.

The fleet is headed by the ... Admiral Chabanenko warship and consists of another three vessels carrying a large number of Russian marines. This fleet will rendezvous with a Russian flotilla standing by in the Mediterranean ..., detached from Russian Black Fleet and composed of the Smetlivy figate and  two large landing craft loaded with Russian marines. ...
The fact that Russia is massing large numbers of marines off the Syrian coast looks as though a landing on Syrian soil is on Moscow's cards.

The Russian marine contingent,  DEBKAfile's sources say, will stand ready - either to come to the aid of the Assad regime or to serve as a bargaining chip for a last-minute deal between Moscow and Washington for ending the war by establishing a transitional military regime in Damascus whose makeup would be agreed between them and Assad.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hinted at this possibility ..., when she said: "We do believe that it is not too late for the Assad regime to commence with planning for a transition."
But Clinton also hinted, in a more threatening tone, that a situation is developing for the creation of safe zones in rebel-controlled areas of Syria. ...
Clinton didn't name the potential protectors of those havens. However, since the Syrian rebels are short of manpower, Western, Muslim or Arab defenders would have to be called in.
Wednesday, British military sources in London said the moment is rushing forward for British forces to get involved in what is happening in Syria. Iran and Turkey are not indifferent either.

Deputy Iranian Revolutionary Guard chief, Gen. Masoud Jazayeri, warned ..., that Tehran would not permit regime change in Damascus and if Syria's enemies intervened, Iran would hit them hard. The Iranian commander pointed a finger at Saudi Arabia and Qatar, adding that the US and Israel are at the forefront of the comprehensive campaign against Syria ...
This was the first time Tehran had explicitly threatened military intervention in Syria.
Wednesday, Turkey shut its border crossings to Syria. Military sources in Ankara confirmed that massive Turkish military strength had been on the move toward the Syrian border.

Russia Sending Warships on Maneuvers Near Syria
NEW YORK TIMES [NYTimes Group/Sulzberger] - By Andrew E. Kramer and Rick Gladstone - July 10, 2012
MOSCOW - Russia said on Tuesday that it had dispatched a flotilla of 11 warships to the eastern Mediterranean, some of which would dock in Syria. It would be the largest display of Russian military power in the region since the Syrian conflict began almost 17 months ago. Nearly half of the ships were capable of carrying hundreds of marines.
The announcement appeared intended to punctuate Russia's effort to position itself as an increasingly decisive broker in resolving the antigovernment uprising in Syria, Russia's last ally in the Middle East and home to Tartus, its only foreign military base outside the former Soviet Union. ...
Russia has occasionally sent naval vessels on maneuvers in the eastern Mediterranean, and ... [t]here were rumors in recent weeks that the Russians planned to deploy another naval force near Syria.
But the unusually large size of the force announced on Tuesday was considered a message, not just to the region but also to the United States and other nations supporting the rebels now trying to depose Syria's president, Bashar al-Assad.
Tartus consists of little more than a floating refueling station and some small barracks. But any strengthened Russian presence there could forestall Western military intervention in Syria. ...

Russia Challenges US-NATO: Russia prepares army for Syrian deployment

WSWS.org [World Socialist Web Site/Published by the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI)] - By Clara Weiss - June 12, 2012
Reposted in GLOBAL RESEARCH.ca : CENTER FOR RESEARCH ON GLOBALIZATION
Given the worsening crisis in Syria, the NEZAVISIMAYA GAZETA of Moscow, Russia [Konstantin Remchukov] [English | Russian] newspaper reported that the Russian army is apparently being prepared for a mission in Syria. Citing anonymous sources in the military leadership, the newspaper said that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the general staff to work out a plan for military operations outside Russia, including in Syria.
The units being prepared for an intervention are the 76th Division of airborne forces (an especially experienced unit of the Russian army), the 15th Army Division, as well as special forces from a brigade of the Black Sea fleet, which has a base in the Syrian port of Tartus.
The details of the operational plan are being prepared by the working parties of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, to which most of the post-Soviet states belong, as well as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, to which China and Russia belong.
According to the newspaper report, deployment depends on the decision of the Russian government and the UN. However, the plans also foresee that the troops might intervene without UN approval. The Russian government has so far not confirmed the report. ...

Intel for the FSA
GATESTONE INSTITUTE (Formerly "Hudson Institute, New York") - By David P. Goldman - July 20, 2012
Ed Note: Regarding the price of blasting caps vs. bullets ...
[...] That's a little odd. So 7.62X39 cartridges (I assume that's what Chivers refers to) go for $4 a pop on the black market, but blasting caps are available for $1.50? In the US, you can get the AK-47 7.62mm cartridges for $0.24 apiece in bulk while blasting caps go for at least $4.00. That means that whomever is supply weapons is providing more blasting caps than rifle cartridges. Someone wants the FSA to have blasting caps. If the attacks are more effective it means that the FSA has better intel about targets. Question is: where are they getting the intel? Turks? Saudis? Both?

Assad's top four men killed by hidden bomb - not suicide bomber
DEBKAFILE - July 18, 2012
The elimination of Bashar Assad's top security tier, leaders of his brutal campaign of suppression against the Syrian uprising sent shock waves reverberating across the Middle East where armies have gone on high alert. It now transpires that their deaths were not caused by a suicide bomber but a 40-kilogram bomb hidden in Syria ministers' conference room at the heavily fortified National Security building, which killed at least four of the eight top officials present: Assad's brother-in-law Security Chief Assif Shawqat, Defense minister Gen. Dawoud Raijiha, Interior Minister Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ibrahim Shaar and ice-Presidential aide and former defense minister Gen. Hasan Turkmani. The last two died of their wounds.
US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta commented: "The violence in Syria is rapidly spinning out of control." Emergency consultations are taking place at the White House, the National Security Council, the Pentagon and the State Department ...
Neither Washington nor Jerusalem has reported military alerts. However, Debkafile's military sources report that US forces in the region, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Turkey have placed their armies on a high state of readiness until it is clear which way the Assad regime jumps after the disaster it sustained. ...

Cyber Warfare: Iran's Nuclear Computer 'Forced to Play AC/DC' by Computer Malware

The Moscow-Tehran Axis: Moscow reconsiders sales of S-300 missiles to Iran
WASHINGTON FREE BEACON - By Bill Gertz - July 19, 2012
Russia is reconsidering sales of advanced S-300 air defense missiles to Iran as the Senate on Wednesday rejected a bipartisan resolution that would have linked granting Moscow permanent normal trade status to a halt in Russian arms sales to Syria.
Statements by a Russian official and a Moscow news report published Wednesday revealed that the Russian government is having second thoughts about its 2010 decision to cancel a sale of S-300s to Iran. ...

The West throws another loop on Russia's neck
PRAVDA - June 20, 2012
[...] The story about the delivery of Russian helicopters to Syria was based on raw information. ... US officials added a bit later that Clinton was talking about the old combat helicopters, which Syria obtained during the Soviet times. However, they added, the choppers had recently received technical servicing in Russia. To put it in a nutshell, it goes about the execution of an old contract. This is what Russian officials said too. According to them, Russia executes its contractual obligations with Syria. .

Putin's July 4th Message
Russian nuclear-capable bombers intercepted near West Coast in second U.S. air defense zone intrusion in two weeks
WASHINGTON FREE BEACON - By Bill Gertz - July 7, 2012
Two Russian strategic nuclear bombers entered the U.S. air defense zone near the Pacific coast on Wednesday and were met by U.S. interceptor jets, defense officials told the Free Beacon.
It was the second time Moscow dispatched nuclear-capable bombers into the 200-mile zone surrounding U.S. territory in the past two weeks.
An earlier intrusion by two Tu-95 Bear H bombers took place near Alaska as part of arctic war games that a Russian military spokesman said included simulated attacks on "enemy" air defenses and strategic facilities. ...
The bomber flights near the Pacific and earlier flights near Alaska appear to be signs Moscow is practicing the targeting of its long-range air-launched cruise missiles on two strategic missile defense sites, one at Fort Greely, Alaska and a second site at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

In May, Russian Gen. Nikolai Makarov, the chief of the Russian General Staff, said during a Moscow conference that because missile defense systems are destabilizing, "A decision on pre-emptive use of the attack weapons available will be made when the situation worsens." The comments highlighted Russian opposition to planned deployments of U.S. missile defense interceptors and sensors in Europe.
The U.S. defense official called the latest Bear H incident near the U.S. West Coast "Putin's Fourth of July Bear greeting to Obama."
Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney, a former Alaska commander for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, said the latest Bear H intrusion appears to be Russian military testing.

"It's becoming very obvious that Putin is testing Obama and his national security team," McInerney told the Free Beacon. "These long-range aviation excursions are duplicating exercises I experienced during the height of the Cold War when I command the Alaska NORAD region.
McInerney said the Bear H flights are an effort by the Russians to challenge U.S. resolve, something he noted is "somewhat surprising as Obama is about to make a unilateral reduction of our nuclear forces as well as major reductions in our air defense forces."
"Actions by Russia in Syria and Iran demonstrate that Cold War strategy may be resurrected," he said.
"These are not good indications of future U.S. Russian relations." ...

False START: Russian failure to notify U.S. of bomber exercises violated New START arms treaty

WASHINGTON FREE BEACON - By Bill Gertz - July 19, 2012
Recent incursions into U.S. air defense zones by Russian nuclear bombers earlier this month were part of exercises that violated provisions of the 2010 New START treaty, according to U.S. officials.
The treaty requires Russia and the United States to provide 14-day advance notification of major strategic exercises involving nuclear bombers covered by the treaty, and to provide notice within 48 hours after the exercises end.

State Department and Pentagon officials said the Russians failed to provide the proper notification for large-scale exercises held in late June in the arctic.
During the exercises, two Tu-95MS Bear H bombers armed with cruise missiles flew into the 200-mile air defense zone near Alaska, prompting U.S. F-15 and Canadian CF-18 jets to intercept the bombers.

The exercises began June 18th, the same day President Obama met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Mexico at what was described as a politically tense meeting.
The exercises ended June 25 and included about 30 Russian aircraft, including Tu-95MS Bear H and Tu-160 Blackjack nuclear-capable bombers; a Russian military spokesman said they had practiced strikes on "enemy air defenses and strategic facilities."

The U.S. Northern Command and joint U.S.-Canada North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) were never notified of the exercises, the officials said.
After the late-June bomber incursion, two more Russian Tu-95s entered the air defense zone near California on July 4 in what defense officials said was an unprecedented air intrusion not seen since the days of the Soviet Union.
The bombers flew very close to the U.S. West Coast, the officials said.
Obama administration and U.S. military officials at the time sought to play down the incursions as non-threatening.

However, Army Col. David Lapan, a spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, raised the issue during a meeting at the Pentagon July 12 with Russian Gen. Nikolai Makarov, chief of the Russian general staff.
"During the visit last week, Generals Dempsey and Makarov briefly discussed recent Russian bomber flights near Alaska and California and pledged better communication in the future to increase transparency and reduce the chances of misunderstanding," Lapan told the Free Beacon. ...

According to other U.S. officials, the administration's conciliatory "reset" policy toward Russia has meant Moscow's questionable international behavior on a range of issues has not been challenged by the administration. ...
The official said the failure to press the Russians is "typical Obama apologist Russian policy."
A second official said the recent strategic nuclear activities by the Russians appear to be part of political messaging by Moscow, which has adopted a strong anti-U.S. posture under Putin. ...

Syria downs Turkish AF plane via Russian Military (instructors)
Who actually downed the Turkish plane?
THE TIMES OF ISRAEL [founding editor David Horovitz,UK/capital partner Seth Klarman, US] - By Elhanan Miller - June 27, 2012
Turkey and Syria are in the center of Arab news Wednesday, as dailies report that fighting between government and opposition engulfed Damascus. ...
... [Q]uoting from a press release issued by the Syrian Observatory, a London-based watchdog, the headline of London-based Al-Hayat reads "clashes reach 'the heart of the regime'; attacks on the barracks of the Republican Guard." The London daily reports that clashes between the Syrian "military elite" and the opposition have reached the presidential palace.
Al-Hayat columnist Randa Taqi A-Din speculates that it was actually the Russians, not the Syrians, who downed the Turkish jet last Friday.
"Did Russian forces help Syria's anti-aircraft units down the Turkish reconnaissance jet? The question arises since the Syrian air force failed many times to protect its national security when hit by Israel. ...
But London-based daily Al-Quds Al-Arabi reports, based on "a Syrian expert," that the anti-aircraft weapon used to shoot down the aircraft was manufactured in Iran and acquired by Syria in December 2010. ...

Newly-supplied Russian Pantsyr-1 used to down Turkish warplane
DEBKAFILE - June 23, 2012
To ambush the Turkish Air Force F-4 Super Phantom Friday, June 22, over Latakia Syria used Russian-made self-propelled medium range anti-air Pantsyr-1 missiles recently supplied by Moscow (not as first reported anti-air Buk-M2 missiles). This weapon can down aircraft flying at altitudes up to 12 kilometers and cruise missiles. The unit responsible for the ambush was the 73rd brigade of the Syrian army's 26th Air Defense Division.
Since the sophisticated weapons were delivered to the Assad regime in recent weeks, it must be assumed that local missile crews had not finished training in their use and would have had to rely on help from their Russian instructors to fire one. ...

Downed Turkish plane highlights risk of escalation
THE NATIONAL, English Newspaper of Abu Dhabi, UAE [Abu Dhabi Media Company PJSC (Government Owned)] - National Editorial - June 24, 2012
[...] Already the conflict may have dragged in other countries - The Guardian reported yesterday that Saudi Arabia is planning to pay the salaries of Free Syrian Army rebels, using Istanbul as a command centre. Reports last week indicated that the CIA is operating in both Syria and Turkey to funnel arms to the rebels. There is a growing risk of an all-out war in the country, if indeed it has not already reached that point. ...

Saudis forces mass on Jordanian, Iraqi borders. Turkey, Syria reinforce strength
DEBKAFILE - June 29, 2012
[...]DEBKAfile's military sources report heavy Saudi troop movements toward the Jordanian and Iraqi borders Thursday overnight and up until Friday morning, June 29, after King Abdullah put the Saudi military on high alert for joining an anti-Assad offensive in Syria. The Saudi units are poised with tanks, missiles, special forces and anti-air batteries to enter Jordan in two heads:
One will safeguard Jordan's King Abdullah against potential Syrian or Iranian reprisals from Syria or Iraq.
The second will cut north through Jordan to enter southeastern Syriam, where a security zone will be established around the towns of Deraa, Deir al-Zour and Abu Kemal - all centers of the anti-Assad rebellion. The region is also the home terrain of the Shammar tribe, brethren of the Shammars of the Saudi Nejd province.
The Saudi units deployed on the Iraqi border are there to defend the kingdom against potential incursions by Iraqi Shiite militias crossing into the kingdom for reprisals. The Iraqi militias are well trained and armed and serve under officers of the Iranian Al-Qods Brigades, the Revolutionary Guards' external arm.
Western Gulf sources report that Jordan too is on war alert. ...

Saudis are buying nuclear-capable missiles from China
DEBKAFILE - July 4, 2012
DEBKAfile's military sources report that Saudi Arabia has set its feet on the path to a nuclear weapon capability and is negotiating in Beijng the purchase of Chinese nuclear-capable Dong-Fen 21 ((NATO-codenamed CSS-5) ballistic missile.
China, which has agreed to the transaction in principle, would also build a base of operations near Riyadh for the new Saudi purchases.
As we reported last year, Saudi Arabia has struck a deal with Pakistan for the availability on demand of a nuclear warhead from Islamabad's arsenal for fitting onto a ballistic missile.
Riyadh owns a direct interest in the two most active Middle East issues: Iran and Syria. ...

REUTERS [Thomson-Reuters] - June 14, 2012
WASHINGTON - U.S. President Barack Obama spoke with Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah on Thursday, the White House said, but gave no details of what subjects their conversation touched upon.
Washington is watching the oil markets closely and is also concerned about escalating violence in Syria, where Saudi Arabia has been an outspoken supporter of the opposition, which is fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
