Welcome to ASHRAE Toronto Chapter
Greetings!
We had a great dinner meeting with CaGBC. The point was made that both ASHRAE and CaGBC are driven by volunteers and could not be viable associations without the help of volunteers. We are making our plans for the committees next year and we need volunteers to man these committees. Can you be a part of our programs committee? Are you able to help plan just one dinner meeting or arrive early for a dinner meeting to take attendance at our registration table? Just a few possibilities that would not take up alot of your time, but would benefit the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter and it's members. If you are interested, please email me or contact one of the Board members and we will get you involved.
Michael Wadham,
Toronto Chapter President.
If you have any trouble registering for a meeting please contact Sabrina Tai at stai@hrai.ca.

Joint Dinner Meeting Partners | Hamilton Chapter |
ASHRAE Hamilton Chapter The ASHRAE Hamilton Chapter was chartered Oct 22nd, 1959 as the 88th chapter in the newly formed Engineering Society called ASHRAE. D. L. Angus, Region 2 Director and Regional Chair from Toronto assisted in the chartering ceremony. Earlier in 1959, actually January 29th, 1959, ASHRAE officially started operations after a merger of two engineering societies - ASHAE - the American Society of Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers which was founded in 1894 and ASRE - the American Society of Refrigerating Engineers founded in 1904. It was in the spring of 1959 that Toronto Member Lloyd Algie ASHRAE contacted a number of Hamilton ASHRAE members to see if there was enough interest in forming a stand alone chapter. ASHRAE had a requirement that they would consider a documented petition from a minimum of 20 Society members from an area to incorporate a stand alone chapter. Lloyd was surprised at the local interest and in the April to May period quickly had 20 members willing to sign a petition. In June, the petition was presented to ASHRAE's BOD who approved the chartering. The chapter was to be called the ASHRAE Niagara Peninsula Chapter, a name that lasted from 1959 to 1971. It was then changed to the Hamilton Chapter to better represent where meetings were held. The first Chapter President was Lloyd Algie. Today, the chapter has about 200 to 250 assigned Society members and 60 to 100 local Chapter members. Meetings now move around to other communities such as Guelph, Cambridge as many of members reside well outside of the Hamilton area. G.E.Menzies Hamilton Chapter Historian

Viewpoint
I have been an ASHRAE member for over 25 years. When I join ASHRAE I lived in Ottawa. However, I never got a chance to attend an Ottawa chapter meeting as my job took me to the Mid West USA whenever the Ottawa meetings occurred. Happily though, I usually attended 5 - 6 ASHRAE chapter meeting in the Mid West as guest or a speaker and always attended the ASHRAE winter meetings.
When I moved to Toronto in 2001 it was my intention was to get more involved with the local Toronto chapter. In the first year when joined Toronto chapter I volunteer my name to be on a committee for the next chapter year. I joined the TEGA committee the next year and was involved in setting up the 2003 Spring Seminar and Trade Show. Next year, I was asked to Chair the TEGA committee. Then I became the Chair of the a committee called Technical Transfer Committee, which was the combination of the Programs and TEGA committees. Next next step was to go on the executive. How time has past and in a few short months my term as President of the Toronto Chapter will come to an end, What was my award?
It was improving my leadership skills, allowed me to meet on a regular basis with my fellow board and committee members, allowed me to network and given me the confidence to start a business.I would encourage all members at one time to volunteer for a committee. For a little investment in time, the awards are very worthwhile. I am proud of my contribution to ASHRAE Toronto Chapter.

Please accept the attached invitation to participate in an intensive 3 day workshop on HVAC Design Essentials. This program was developed to provide practical training for designers and others in design, engineering, project coordination, sales and delivery of HVAC&R services and products.
The workshop will take place May 18-20, 2011 in ASHRAE headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.
This program is designed for the junior engineer who needs training in the specifics of working in the HVAC&R industry. As this generally is not taught in any great detail in University this can provide employers with a fertile training tool for newer employees with potential in their work.
Finally, Joel Primeau from Ottawa who is a practicing consulting engineer and chair of the Student Activities Committee is one of two experienced and excellent trainers.
Please consider attendance at this workshop by up and coming young "stars". For more information please contact David Underwood at (416) 948-8902 or

Region II PAOE Update
Presidential Award of Excellence (PAOE) is one of the most sophisicated organization management tools used by ASHRAE to guide all the Chapters. It has clear performance expectations, measures your success and promotes competition with points and rewards.
The following table describes the measurement of our chapter activities relative to the other chapters in our Region. This measurement tool is developed and adjusted annually in the listed categories by the Society President for the direction of all chapter activities across the society, so we at the grass roots are all pulling in the same direction.

Young Engineers In ASHRAE
The 2010-2011 ASHRAE year is shaping up to be one of our best years for YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE)! We had a very successful 2009-2010 year with a lot of new faces out at our YEA events. It is our hopes that we will continue to see the high level of interest from our young ASHRAE members moving forward.
The program for the upcoming YEA year has been modified from last year to collaborate our efforts with the CTTC (Chapter Technology Transfer Committee), Student Activities Committee and Membership Committee. Not to worry, we will still be providing some social events for YEA members outside of the general ASHRAE calendar. To that note we recently had a pub crawl in October 2010 and one more is for the winter of 2011! The pub crawls are always a good time and even if you are not a YEA member, but would like to meet some of the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter members who are below 35 please come out and have a beer or two with us. It is not only important for YEA members to meet colleagues in their own age group, but it is fundamental that the YEA members meet ASHRAE Toronto Members who have given so much of their time over the years. We have a lot to learn from each other! For those interested in YEA events you will be able to find the events on the main ASHRAE calendar.
Some of the highlights to this year will be a Career Fair in early 2011, which will be organized through YEA and Student Activities. YEA will also be organizing the March 2011 meeting which will be in conglomeration with CaGBC and will feature a tour of a LEED building followed by a discussion of the LEED program in a panel format. The panel will consist of a representative from contractors, developers/owners, engineers and architects. This should be an excellent evening to learn about the different perspectives of the LEED program and we hope to see many of our regular members and YEA members out to this event.
Another major accomplishment for the YEA committee is the attendance of 3 delegates from the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter at this year's YEA Leadership Weekend which will be held at ASHRAE headquarters in Atlanta. Greg Rushby, Marco Ottavino and I will be attending this event in hopes to learn more about ASHRAE and how to better prepare our chapter for the future. We will also be touring the ASHRAE headquarters which will be an excellent opportunity for us as young members to see all the technology in the building and I am sure it will be a lasting experience for all. It is our hopes to send different delegates to next year's YEA Leadership Weekend so we encourage all of our young members to come out and participate in some of the great events that the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter has prepared for you in 2010-2011 year.
I am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces this year and I hope to see many more new young ASHRAE members take the initiative and get involved.
