Greetings!

In spite of a bit of snow during the day, the skies were clear and the view from the 360 restaurant was spectacular. We had 69 members, guests and spouses attend the CN Tower Decemberfest and on all accounts the dinner was a big success.

We are excited to be holding our very first Toronto ASHRAE Career Fair to held at the January Dinner meeting at Ryerson University. Whether a student looking for work or you are just looking to see what's out there make sure you drop by the Toronto ASHRAE Career Fair.

 Maple Leaf Gardens Redevelopment
A new Ryerson University Sports and Recreation Centre is being built at Maple Leaf Gardens, a historic Toronto landmark and one of the most famous buildings in Canada. The revitalization of the Gardens is a joint effort involving Ryerson University, Loblaw Companies Limited, and the federal government. Ryerson students have been at the forefront of making the new centre possible. In a spring 2009 referendum, students voted overwhelmingly to increase their athletic fees to support a new sports and recreation centre. The fees will provide $20 million for the new facility. On Dec. 1, 2009 the government of Canada announced that it was pledging $20 million to the project, and Loblaw and Ryerson announced that they would launch a joint fundraising effort for another $20 million, including a $5 million contribution from Loblaw. The facility will be completed by March, 2011.

Team North - Ryerson University - 2009 Solar Decathlon Competition Entry

Dr. Alan Fung, together with former Ryerson University students, Toktam Saeid and Aya Dembo, will be providing an overview of Team North's competition entry into the 2009 Solar Decathlon Competition.

In October 2009, Team North competed in the US Department of Energy (D.O.E.) 2009 Solar Decathlon competition. Team North's mission was to design and deliver North House, an energy efficient solar-powered home while training Canada's next generation of leaders in sustainable design. In North House, the PV system on the roof was the primary energy generation, complimented by a custom PV cladding system on the south, east and west facades. A solar assisted heat pump system including a three-tank heat transfer and storage system, the slightly tilted evacuated-tube solar thermal collectors on the roof and a variable capacity heat pump met the hot water and space heating demands. A second variable capacity heat pump was utilized for space cooling. The presentation presents the HVAC system with the real-time results as measured during the duration of 10-day competition in Washington DC. Despite the fact that the house experienced severe weather changes during the competition, it was identified  as being net-positive while maintaining the required level of thermal comfort as evidenced by the 3rd place finish in the Comfort Zone contest, 3rd place finish in Net-Metering , and ranked 4th place in the final competition.

 | Viewpoint  As the Chapter's President-Elect, one of my important functions is to plant the seed for success for next year.   In an ASHRAE Chapter, it quite normal to have Chapter Members coming from all facets of our HVAC&R industry such as suppliers, manufacturers, consulting engineers, contractors, commissioning authority, facility managers, government officials, utilities suppliers and other indirectly related fields like owners, lawyers, accountant, architects, engineers with different discipline like structural and electrical. Our clients and all in the industry count heavily on all of us to provide our expertise and services that are current, up to date and new all the time. With the trend and thrust in doing the right thing and to be sustainable and green to the earth, we cannot stay stagnant. It is very important for us to plan or put aside some kind of educational time in our busy working time to learn and educate ourselves to be current with all the new things available to us and be really beneficial to our clients and industry whether in products, standards, design, delivery and construction methods. With all due respect to the other organizations, for most of us, in the HVAC&R industry, there is no doubt in my mind, ASHRAE with their strict non-commercial policy, is the best place to develop, learn and educate ourselves with unbiased and current knowledge and information. On that note, I would like to encourage all to invest money and time in your education, as one of your important 2011 New Year's Resolution. Please start educating yourselves with the following ASHRAE important recent publications: ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2010: Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010: Energy Standard for Buildings except Low-Rise Residential Buildings ASHRAE Standard 189.1-2010: The Green Standard for High Performance Buildings ASHRAE Standard 55-2010: Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy ASHRAE Standard 180-2008: Standard Practice for Inspection and Maintenance of Commercial Buildings HVAC Systems. I guarantee the above will benefit you, your clients and your business. Thank you. Michael Khaw, P. Eng President-Elect ASHRAE Toronto Chapter

The innovative cooling system is driven by superhot water and rotating solar mirrors, with absorption chillers creating a vacuum-based refrigeration cycle. During the soccer governing body's visit to a model stadium, the temperature was 23°C (73°F) on the pitch. Outside the stadium, it was 44°C (111°F).

 | Young Engineers In ASHRAE

The 2010-2011 ASHRAE year is shaping up to be one of our best years for YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE)!  We had a very successful 2009-2010 year with a lot of new faces out at our YEA events.  It is our hopes that we will continue to see the high level of interest from our young ASHRAE members moving forward. The program for the upcoming YEA year has been modified from last year to collaborate our efforts with the CTTC (Chapter Technology Transfer Committee), Student Activities Committee and Membership Committee.   Not to worry, we will still be providing some social events for YEA members outside of the general ASHRAE calendar.  To that note we recently had a pub crawl in October 2010 and one more is for the winter of 2011!  The pub crawls are always a good time and even if you are not a YEA member, but would like to meet some of the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter members who are below 35 please come out and have a beer or two with us.  It is not only important for YEA members to meet colleagues in their own age group, but it is fundamental that the YEA members meet ASHRAE Toronto Members who have given so much of their time over the years.  We have a lot to learn from each other!  For those interested in YEA events you will be able to find the events on the main ASHRAE calendar.   Some of the highlights to this year will be a Career Fair in early 2011, which will be organized through YEA and Student Activities.  YEA will also be organizing the March 2011 meeting which will be in conglomeration with CaGBC and will feature a tour of a LEED building followed by a discussion of the LEED program in a panel format.  The panel will consist of a representative from contractors, developers/owners, engineers and architects.  This should be an excellent evening to learn about the different perspectives of the LEED program and we hope to see many of our regular members and YEA members out to this event.   Another major accomplishment for the YEA committee is the attendance of 3 delegates from the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter at this year's YEA Leadership Weekend which will be held at ASHRAE headquarters in Atlanta.  Greg Rushby, Marco Ottavino and I will be attending this event in hopes to learn more about ASHRAE and how to better prepare our chapter for the future.  We will also be touring the ASHRAE headquarters which will be an excellent opportunity for us as young members to see all the technology in the building and I am sure it will be a lasting experience for all.  It is our hopes to send different delegates to next year's YEA Leadership Weekend so we encourage all of our young members to come out and participate in some of the great events that the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter has prepared for you in 2010-2011 year. I am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces this year and I hope to see many more new young ASHRAE members take the initiative and get involved.   Imtee H. Baksh, P.Eng YEA Committee Chair |

STUDENT ACTIVITIES
 Technical Tour: Canatal International Inc.
On November 18th student members of Toronto Chapter had an opportunity to attend a technical tour of a manufacturing facilities of one of the leaders in server room environment, Canatal International 2008 Inc. During this tour students were given very interactive safety instructions on possible hazards during a tour, after which we were split on four groups. Each group had separate tour of the manufacturing floor.
During our tour we interacted with staff of the manufacturing facility, and were able to see latest manufacturing processes in action, and were given brief overview on how each machine works. One of the biggest hits with everyone attending was a 5-axis robotic arm working synchronously with the automated press, to produce parts for the Canatal products.
Our tour was concluded by a presentation by Frank Lembo, Engineering representative from Canatal. His presentation started with the principles and complications of the Computer Room Air Conditioning. Presentation proceeded to show evolution in the design of the Computer Room layouts and a principles driving these changes. Frank showed and explained new technological  advances which were introduced by Canatal International into the industry. During whole presentation students were free to ask questions and were given an opportunity to identify some of the problems in different computer room designs.

On behalf of everyone who attended this tour I want to thank Canatal staff and specially Frank Lembo for putting together such an interesting tour.

A Look at Upcoming Events...
Exam period put on hold most of the activities within student membership of our chapter, but student activities is looking toward new year and planing for more exciting events in months to come. One of those big events would be ASHRAE Winter Conference in Las Vegas. This year Toronto Chapter provides financial assistance to ten student members from different Universities and Colleges to attend this conference, and by the time this article would be published most of the sponsored students would have purchased their plane tickets.
