Greetings!
Lots of great Fall activities coming up in Hillsdale, including the Barn Dance this weekend and the big Harvest Festival on October 3, both at the Roe Jan Park. The old Agway building is coming to life as an art center, with an opening exhibit on October 3. And the Farmer's Market will run until October 17! Please come to the public hearing on fire protection for Harlemville on October 20 at 6:30, just preceding the Town Board meeting which will decide the best way to keep Harlemville protected. There will be a Halloween Hay Ride and Parade at the Firehouse on October 31. And don't forget to vote on November 3 for new members of the Town Board!

Saturday, October 3, Second Annual Hillsdale/Copake Fall Harvest Festival 12:00-5:00 pm, Roe Jan Park. Child-friendly At this celebration of fall and the harvest of local farms, visitors can watch apples being pressed for cider, learn about beekeeping from a local beekeeper, pet newborn calves, try their hand at molding beeswax, churn milk into butter. There will be a teen talent show, horse-drawn wagon rides, Halloween face painting, apple pie contest, biggest pumpkin contest, bake sale, lots of children's games, local farmer's goods, live music, food, pig roast by Hillsdale Fire Department, silent auction and 50/50 raffle. Live bands will include local musicians The BH Brothers, Christina Dellea and Paul Slusar, The Varriales, The Hillsdale Hillbillies and Civilian. Deadline to enter teen talent show is September 28. Saturday, October 3, Art opening, Goliath Gallery, Old Agway Building 6:00-8:00 pm, 32 Anthony St. Opening exhibit for the new arts organization now occupying the old Agway building on Anthony Street. Everyone is invited.
'Goliath Hillsdale' will be a gallery, teaching facility, and subsidized studio space for emerging and mid-career artists and designers. Two permanent rotating galleries will feature work by local artists, and there will be ongoing art classes for local residents and an artists in residence program. The first art exhibit will be the current collaborative work "Forever at War" by painter and Hillsdale resident Benjamin David Tritt, architects Aaron and Haily Tweedie, and designer Albert Sultan, as well as work by Great Barrington photographer Will Wendt and other artists. The entire event is curated by John Haas.

Sunday, October 18, Trees for Tribs: Tree-planting at Roe Jan Park
10:00 am - 12 noon, Roe Jan Park Once again, the DEC has donated native trees and shrubs for planting along the Roeliff Janse Kill. They'll bring the trees, do the heavy lifting, dig the holes. Tuesday, October 20 -- Public Hearing re: Harlemville Fire Protection District 7:00 pm, Town Hall Public hearing on fire protection for the Harlemville area now that the Philmont Fire District has announced its intention to raise the annual price of servicing the Harlemville area from $17,000 to $72,000.00 a year. The Board is considering arranging for another fire company to service the area. The affected area is the northwest corner of Hillsdale, outlined below, in the area marked "47." Affected residents will be contacted directly by the town.

Assessment Workshop

can towns help to protect local and regional biodiversity? The Columbia Land Conservancy is co-sponsoring this day long Hudsonia
workshop for
local land use decision makers. Hands-on exercises in
analyzing topographic maps, geology maps, soil surveys,
and aerial photos will give participants the skills and
techniques to predict the occurrence of ecologically
significant habitats in the landscape. Hudsonia biologists
will introduce principles of biodiversity conservation
that can be applied to townwide planning and to
site-specific environmental reviews of development
projects.
Space
is limited, and preference will be given to members of
town boards, planning boards, conservation commissions,
watershed councils, and other municipal or regional
representatives directly involved in environmental reviews
