:: The Crocodile :: Saturday, 2/27

The Closing Ceremonies, or "an orgy of unconventional
excellence", promises those with the legal and budgetary limitations that
prevent them from entering Canada,
a spectacle and audio visual cacophony of epic proportions. Matching some of Seattle's
most progressive and psychedelic artists with their own counterparts and
collaborators within the world of Hip Hop, Scott Colburn & Soul United have
created a night like none other in the history of the city.
Every act on The Closing Ceremonies bill boasts production
by Scott Colburn (Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, Mudhoney) and has been hand
picked by him for the evening based on the excitement and oddity of their
pairing. From Hard Ass Soul to Nigerian Hip Hop, or via Jabon, his own "Dark
Ambient Avant Garde Disco Comedy", each act represents the incredible range of
his recent productions.
Few bands have benefited more from the Colburn experience
than The Staxx Brothers. Since the release of their 2nd LP We Are The Blaxstonz last May, the group has secured national
booking representation, headlining dates at US festivals like Joshua Tree, and
invitations to perform at coveted showcases such as SxSeattle this March in Austin.
They are a fine act, but the recording itself stands alone; We Are The Blaxstonz has been named one
of the top 25 albums of 2010 by jambase.com,
catapulting the tiny indie band from Seattle into the quality and company of
Them Crooked Vultures, Grizzly Bear, & U2.
All things can be funky
when the strings are manipulated by master funkateers like The Staxx Brothers.
The sophomore slab from these Seattle
freakazoids is the perfect mixture of grime and polish, where
they slap you high
five while simultaneously exposing the seamy side of our collective underbelly.
Street and book smart, this crew romps with purpose, creating impossible to get
out of your head nuggets like "1992," "Westsound Union" and
"Game Recognize Game." With wafts of country and hard rock, they
groove gloriously on their path towards a fab new soul mythology.
