15 THING I'VE LEARNT NO.12
Hi
Continuing the series from my previous
newsletter here is the next instalment of 15 things I've learnt about human
beings and success in 3,500 hours. No. 1 is "
For
every obstacle there will always be several solutions". You can read the previous 11 things I've learnt in the archives.
For
every obstacle there will always be several solutions
Obstacles, challenges and problems are unavoidable in life and
it's how you respond to these defining moments that shape the type of life you live.
Some people seem to have constant struggles and live in a place of defeat
whereas for others, it seems to bring the best out in them. Each and every
problem you overcome in life, makes you stronger, more self-assured and empowers
you to confidently move in the direction of your dreams.
We are built to conquer
environment, solve problems, achieve goals, and we find no real satisfaction or
happiness in life without obstacles to conquer and goals to achieve. Maxwell Maltz
It's Your Attitude/Outlook
that Makes the Difference
The best course of action is to view obstacles as opportunities
to make yourself better. As soon as a problem pops up, don't go looking for a
place to hide, get busy and start looking for solutions. Albert Einstein said, 'We
cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.'
Norman Vincent Peale said, 'Every problem has in it the seeds of its
own solution.'
The worst thing you can do is spend hours and hours
worrying. Most of the challenges we face are not the insurmountable walls we
think they are. We need to think creatively and use our God given imagination. Begin
immediately to focus on finding the solutions. Use your time to test new ideas
and search out alternative approaches. Armed with the right attitude and a
healthy dose of self confidence, life's problems will soon be no problem at
all.
An Example
Coaching creates the space for people to think in
non-judgmental environment. I've had many clients who previously allowed
obstacles to overcome them but they are now problem solvers, solution finders.
I worked with the long-term unemployed for 5 years who were chronically
defeated even before they started.
Let's say a person
wants to do some further study to improve their career.
Immediately they see
the obstacles.
1. I
can't afford the study
2. I
don't have the time
3. The
course is not available in my location
4. I
don't have the prior experience to do the course
5. I'm
not intelligent enough to achieve that level of accreditation
6. I
can't get there in time after work
7. The
application process is too stringent
The list goes on and on for the
person who is finding excuses that keep them locked into their current 'can't do' mentality. They remain stuck.
Can you see the list
above will either be the wall that keeps them imprisoned or the foundation for
finding answers?
See how many solutions you can find to each of those
obstacles. There are at least 5 for each. The trick is to think and write. Don't
think and judge the thought.
Got a challenge, problem or obstacle? There will always be
solutions. You are just not thinking hard enough or negating the possibility before
it has a chance to germinate.
