15 THING I'VE LEARNT NO.11
Hi
Continuing the series from my previous
newsletter here is the next instalment of 15 things I've learnt about human
beings and success in 3,500 hours. No. 11 is "
Everyone needs to define success for themselves". You can read the previous 10 things I've learnt in the archives.
Everyone needs to define success for themselves
Q: What does success really
mean for you? Q: Are you successful right
now? Q: When will you know if
you have arrived at success?
Most people see 'things'
as the evidence of success. When people are asked what they want to achieve,
what are their goals and dreams, typically, they come up with generic
things such as:
- A penthouse apartment by the
harbour
- A mansion with a pool
- A holiday apartment on the Gold
Coast
- A BMW, Mercedes Benz or some
European sports car
- To win lotto is a common one
- Marry a wealthy man
- To have a six pack
- To travel for 6 months of the
year
What created a list like that? I'm not saying there
is anything wrong with the things above but too often people have only a
conditioned perception of success. In
other words it is not of their own choosing. It has been given to them by
socialisation, the corporate world, family and the conditioning of marketing and
advertising. When asking people to
define success and what goals they want to achieve, people will usually go for the things they have been told will make
them happy. They have never really defined
success for themselves. This is why people often don't achieve goals because subconsciously, deep down inside they know it's
not what they really want.
'There's nothing like a strong sense of purpose based on
clearly spelled out values to keep you moving. But more than that, it keeps you
moving in the right direction. Without it,
you can climb the ladder of success all right, but when you get to the top, you
may find that it's leaning against the wrong building'. Lou Tice
There are numerous
definitions of success.
Dictionary: The achievement of something desired, planned, or
attempted.
Personal Success Australia defines it as: Success is the progressive
realisation of your predetermined and worthwhile personal goals.
Get clear about what success means for you. Write out a paragraph
of each of these sections of your life to get a clearer picture. Ask yourself
