15 THING I'VE LEARNT NO.10

Dear

Continuing the series from my previous newsletter here is the next instalment of 15 things I've learnt about human beings and success in 3,500 hours. No. 10 is " Learning to be present ensures your life is richer.". You can read the previous 9 things I've learnt in the archives.

Learning to be Present Ensures your Life is Richer

A relative newcomer to personal development is the concept of 'being present', sometimes called 'living in the moment'.  Once you discover how to do this, your life will take on a richer, fuller experience because your consciousness has expanded, even awakened.  You actually get more out of life.

How Much of Your Life is Habit?
Consider this for a moment. When you get up in the morning, when do you become conscious? You may say, 'well as soon as I wake up'. You might be awake but are you consciously aware.  You probably go through a series of rituals like showering, dressing, eating, leaving for work, driving or catching public transport and everything you do has become habitual.  How often have you driven your car kilometres, only to realise 30 minutes later, you were not consciously driving as your mind was somewhere else?

You can be with your partner, children or friends but not be there. An affirmation you put on a wall initially was something you noticed every time you saw it but after several weeks your brain no longer prompts you to acknowledge it as it has blended into the background. There is an automatic cutting out that occurs in the brain.

Living on Autopilot
We live a great deal of our lives on autopilot.  This can be a very useful tool because if you were aware of all that was happening and taking in every stimulus around you your brain would probably blow a fuse from overload.  It is very useful to disconnect the autopilot though (one of the things we do in coaching).  If you don't learn how to do this you'll find you miss out on life and only live in survival mode or live habitually.

Being Present - an Experience
When I was living in Pyrmont and walked across Darling Harbour Bridge to the city everyday, I made a practice of 'being present'. I'd take in everything around me, awe at the amazing buildings towering in front of me, smelt the sea air, felt the warmth of the sun on my face, watched the seagulls hovering in the breezes above me, listened to the irregular footsteps made by the many people bustling off to work.  As I walked, I tried to take in every bit of stimulus around me and began thanking the universe for all the blessings I had in my life.

For ten minutes or so, I was present and discovered how those few moments had a positive impact on my day.  Most people crossing the bridge were miles away, already thinking about the stresses of the day ahead or carrying the concerns of yesterday. Not me! I was having a great time.

How?
It's about pausing. Thinking reflectively. Breathing deeply. Becoming aware of the stimulus of all your senses. Listening intently.  It's about being totally conscious.Try it.

DON'T LET REGRET OF THE PAST OF FEAR OF THE FUTURE, ROB YOU OF YOUR PRESENT

'A Life of Unlearning'
Revised Second Edition
Totally re-written with an additional 80 pages

A Life of Unlearning - A Journey to Find the Truth is Australia's Brokeback Mountain and Ted Haggard stories rolled into one. It's a behind the scenes look into the life of a high profile preacher who, believing being gay made him unacceptable to God and others, struggles to resolve his homosexuality and his Christian beliefs. Ultimately, this honest account is as story of resolution, the impact the author's courage has on others and what it means to live authentically.

"Human stories, like the one in these pages, play a part in advancing understanding and acceptance. It is the story of a quest to find not only self-acceptance but one of the most powerful forces in nature-human love.."
