Habitat Happenings, e-newsletter
November 2010
Greetings!

Please receive a warm, heart-felt Thank You from all of us at Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity.

It is because of your involvement with our organization that we are able to move forward "building more than a house" in partnership with families in need.  Thank you for every dollar you send, thank you for every hour you spend at the work-site building with us, for volunteering your time in committees, organizing events, providing snacks and lunches, partnering with us to guide our families through the program and for so many "random acts of kindness."  We could not possibly do what we do without your help.

This Thanksgiving season, we give thanks, again for having you in our corner fighting against poverty housing.  We hope you enjoy our November edition of Habitat Happenings!

Have a safe, joyful Thanksgiving holiday.

Time to Celebrate and Hand Over the Keys!
Sexton Street Dedications

Remember how... just last May we held the Build-A-Thon on Sexton Street in New Britain? We have been building on Sexton Street for months and now it's time to celebrate!

Please join us as we dedicate the Sexton and Gilbert Street Neighborhood. It is truly a blessing to celebrate our mission

during this holiday season.

Think: "Stocking Stuffers!"

The Hartford Stanley Store will be opening now on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8:30am - 5:30pm.

Take advantage of the Tool of the Month Special
and the Frequent Buyer Card.  With your card, you receive 25% off your total purchase on your 9th visit!

Rose and our volunteers will be glad to help you find exactly what you need to get that home improvement project completed.  With a large selection of items available, this is the best time to think about 'stocking stuffers' for all those 'construction' people in your holiday list!

Jen and Sarah Still Pedaling Through the Country
Filled with lots of courage, stamina and resiliency, Jen and Sarah are more committed and stronger than ever to Habitat for Humanity's vision as they travel through the country - on their bikes!

For well over eight seasons, the Bike and Build program has been raising funds for affordable housing projects and raising awareness about the need for these affordable housing opportunities in different communities.  Jen and Sarah built last May with Hartford Habitat during our 2010 Build-a-Thon on Sexton Street and have now been to several states including Colorado and Wyoming!

We did it again!
We have just received word that Hartford Habitat has received a grant to build our third "Thrivent Builds" house through the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Program! The project is in the plans to start in Hartford in January 2011 and we're very excited to work with the Lutheran faith communities within the Hartford Chapter again.  As soon as we get more information, you will be hearing more on how to get your Lutheran Church involved throughout the construction of the house.
Saturday mornings workshops are still going!
Attend one - or all - of the seminars held on Saturday mornings to learn the right techniques to give your home a little face-lift.  While you're learning, you're also helping Hartford Habitat!

Get the
schedule and find out more about this initiative here.  Thanks to Kitchen & Bath Design + Construction for providing the workshops and collaborating with Hartford Habitat!

Collegiate Corner Shining Stars!
We are very proud of the collaboration we have with our younger volunteers: the Campus Chapters in our area!

This semester the following Campus Chapters have also joined us at the work sites to build as part of our covenant with each school:

    * Glastonbury High School
    * University of Hartford
    * UConn Medical School, Farmington
    * University of Connecticut, Storrs
Please don't forget...

...that many people think that Habitat for Humanity just builds houses, but there is so much more that comes from collaborating with hard working families. Together, we build much more than a house.  Owning a home, which our families built in parthership with Hartford Habitat, improves their lives and the lives of their children and future generations.

Please take a second to read the Hin & Sok Family profile, which is a great example of how homeownership creates generational impact. The Hins have passed on to their children the desire to succeed and to improve their lives by providing a safe, decent place to call home. They have also instilled in their children the importance of education.

You CAN help us make our 2010 Fall Appeal campaign a success! A donation you make today impacts families like the Hins for generations to come. Please make a financial contribution to Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity so that we can continue to build affordable housing and provide families with an opportunity to succeed and prosper.
