Thank You!

horse massage
Ahhh - that's the spot!

Each & every one of us would like to thank each & every one of you who contributed to the 4-H Club's brilliant idea to give us massages.

Besides just feeling good, massage increases our circulation & blood flow, alleviates muscle tension & increases flexibility, muscle tone & range of motion. It helps get rid of the harmful by-products of muscle use.

Also, it's so relaxing; a real stress reducer, as you know if someone has ever been nice enough to give you a massage.

So, once again, thank you all!

young horses

The difference between the horse colors "bay" & "chestnut"? The bay will always have a black mane & tail. The chestnut's mane & tail will be be the same color as its coat, or a few shades lighter or darker. If you ride Western you are allowed to call a chestnut a sorrel.

Groundhog

These animals have somehow been linked to Candlemas Day (Feb 2) & here's the poem that goes with it:

If Candlemas be fair and bright
Winter will have another flight
If Candlemas be cloud and rain
Winter will be gone and not come again

How that relates to pulling a happily hibernating marmot out of its burrow? No idea.

Don't try the Punxsutawney Phil (or Sir Walter Wally) trick at home, though. Groundhogs are not known for their sweet temperaments so leave it to the professionals.

Welcome back, Lily!

Patti & Lily
Dear Friends of MacNair's,

Safety first!
And not just horse safety. There is NO SMOKING allowed anywhere near the barns for glaringly obvious reasons. Also, we like you & want you to be healthy so you shouldn't be smoking anyway. If you're smoking because you are on fire, someone will be along shortly with a hose to put you out.

Safety First, Part 2: We all love our dogs. But dogs are not allowed in the barn. Also: no dogs running loose - they tend to startle the horses at inopportune times. Leashes should be no longer than 6'; if your leash is retractable please let it play out to no more than 6'. These seemingly simple rules go a long way to keeping everyone safe. Thank you for understanding.

4-H Show Team tryouts
were 1/29. Thanks to everyone who came to ride, spectate & help out. Martina will (probably) have results by Thu, 2/4.

Camp Cheval this year will have some exciting new programs including an Evening Camp (with one session just for adults), Hit the Hay (overnight camp), & a session for Mothers & Daughters. More information on Camp will be forthcoming.

The NCSU IHSA Hunt Seat Team is competing at two shows this month. Go, Wolfpack!

There will be a Roby Moreland Horsemanship Clinic on 2/4-5 at the Annex that you won't want to miss. Get in touch with Karen for details.

Winter II Horse Show at the Hunt Center 2/16-19 - talk to Cam for details.

Parents! If you need to cancel a ride, please call or email the Office. You can inform your child's instructor that Susie won't be in class next week, but that is just informational for the instructor. To cancel the lesson, please call or email the Office.

And finally, don't forget that we want the groundhog to NOT see his shadow on 2/2. Let's keep this 60 degree stuff going till it's officially spring!

When you're not around horses what do you like to do?
Hike with my dogs or go to the Zoo.  Pets? 2 dogs, Haven & Chi Chi. What's the last thing you accomplished with a horse that you were really proud of? I helped Vogue get through a rough colic episode. When teaching lessons, what do find yourself repeating? "Sit up, eyes up, hands down, heels down!" Favorite movie/TV show? How to Train Your Dragon / the Middle  Favorite snack? anything bad for me What do you think is important for your students to know? Strive for balance & effectiveness.  If horses were out of the picture what would you like to do? Work in a lab or in surgery at a veterinary hospital.

A Couple Reminders
for February

Roby Moreland
On 2/4-5 there will be a Roby Moreland Horsemanship Clinic at the Annex. Get in touch with Karen for details.

Mattie will Saddle Up on 2/18. If you know someone whose New Year's Resolution was "Find a fun way to get more exercise" encourage them to try riding! Saddle Up is for first-time riders only.

NO SMOKING anywhere near the barns.Yes, this includes you! No exceptions!

Please remember to change your blanketing instructions as your horse's coat changes. Is s/he even more furry now than last month? Been body clipped? Don't assume we know - check your card & update as needed.

Dogs are not allowed in the barn & are only allowed on the farm if kept on a leash no longer than 6'. Please don't be the one who gets all dogs banned from the farm. We all want to keep our horses, riders & other dogs safe & happy.

Time to clean out your bluebird box! Bluebirds need an empty house so they can begin building this year's nest. Valentine's Day is traditionally when to complete this task (& honestly, isn't that sweet?) but they may be looking to nest earlier this year due to the warm weather. So stop reading right now & go take care of your bluebird house.

To cancel a lesson you need to call or email the Office. Telling the instructor is thoughtful, but it doesn't cancel the lesson.

2/2...4-H Club Meeting 6:30
in the Country Acres lounge. Remember to print & bring the agenda that was emailed to you.

2/25...4-H Achievement Night

Thank you to everyone who came out on 1/29 (a beautiful day, by the way) to try-out for Show Team. Announcements will probably be made on Thursday, 2/2.

2012 tryouts

The following is from our intrepid reporter in the field (or at the ring, or in the lounge) Laura Toombs:

Although horses brought them together, MacNair's 4-H Club is more - it's also about helping others.

In December, the Club sang Christmas carols to the elderly.

In January, they got together to make quilts for burn victims. (Special thanks to those who brought their sewing machines!)

Now, in February, they are collecting canned goods to go to the state 4-H organization later this month. If possible, please leave a can of food in the box in the lounge & know you are helping, too. Thanks!

4-H quilts
finished quilts - great job, everyone!

No chocolate for your dog! Or your horse! However, the staff & instructors will be happy to take it off your hands & dispose of it properly.

We want to hear from you. Please take a few minutes to tell us what's on your mind.

Feel free to  post on our Facebook page! (It may show up here, too.)

Sincerely,
the Staff at MacNair's Country Acres
