the Word from the Herd Bath-time
Have you noticed that the weather's been kind of warm? Sweat helps keep us cool but when it dries it can make us itchy. If there is sweat only under the saddle, you can brush or towel it & that's fine. If we are covered with sweat, you may need to hose us off.
Before turning on the hose, gather the following: goopy hoof dressing (if I'm wearing shoes), a big sponge, a bucket, mane comb & a sweat scraper. A towel is nice too.
Using the hoof dressing to cover the nail holes keeps water from getting in. My hoof wall is less likely to crack when the water dries, especially during summer when I stamp my feet to get flies off my legs.
Fill the bucket with water & put the sponge in it.
Now hose me off starting at the top of my neck & working your way back. Please be careful not to squirt my head - water in my ears REALLY HURTS! Try to get underneath my belly & between my legs.
When done with the hose, use the sponge to wash my head. If I'm sure you won't get water in my ears I will probably lower my head for you. This feels good.
Then use the sweat scraper. Finally, towel off my head. This feels good too. Use the towel to dry off my legs, especially my heels.
At this point if you comb my mane over it will stay where it's supposed to when it's dry (in theory). Look at me now! Despite the fact that you are wet & dirty, I look & feel great! Thanks!

Did you know?

Horses only need 3 - 4 hours of sleep a day & get most of their sleep in short bits of time. It's true they can sleep standing up but lie down to dream.

Dear Friends of MacNair's,
Riding School classes start 8/26. Welcome back everyone! Registration information was emailed to all students in July so if you didn't get your registration forms please let us know right away. Spaces are reserved on a first come first served basis.
Current group classes will continue through 8/12. Instructors are available for private lessons 8/12-25.
No lessons on school horses 8/19-22. The horses will be on vacation; they are going to the beach & the ponies are going to Six Flags. Sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to fill out our Riding School Survey. Your insight is very much appreciated & we are incorporating some of your suggestions. We hope you are enjoying your new car. If you can ride before 2:30 on a weekday, please check with the office. We are discounting the lessons. Groups are forming now. In the interest of saving trees (& postage) all invoices will be emailed this year. If you need a paper copy you will need to let Nancy know. Hunter Pace information will be available mid-August. Watch for it on the website & we will let you know on Facebook as well. Overnight stabling will be available. Tentative dates are Sept 25 & Nov 25 (the day after Thanksgiving. Seriously, would you rather go to the mall or ride in a Hunter Pace? I think we all know the answer to that.) July was a busy show month - check below for results. Nancy

NCHJA AA Show - Raleigh - 6/29-7/3
Good show! Samantha & Forte were Champions of the Short Stirrup division, winning "the Texas Kid" Memorial Trophy. Kara showed at 3' for the first time & Thom remarked that one of Noir's trips was "the best round I've ever seen her have."
Raleigh Indoor C Show - Raleigh - 7/29-31
Emma & Marty were Reserve Champions in the Pre-Children / Pre-Adult Division, which had over 30 horses in it. They won a class & got a 2nd O/F & were 4th in the U/S. Congratulations! Julia & Pia also got very good ribbons (4th through 6th) in this same division O/F, won the Eq on the Flat (Emma was 3rd) & got a 3rd in the U/S. For both riders, it was their first time off the farm jumping 2'6". Sarah N & Pia also won a U/S class early in the week. Frampton & Theodore went along too, to see what this "horse show" thing is all about & were amazingly well-behaved. Biscaye showed in the Baby Greens - an appropriate division.

A Couple Reminders... for August
Weather Alert! Try to ride as early in the day as you can. Remember to drink lots of water before you even leave for the barn. If you start to feel not quite right (headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea -even slight!) it's time to end for the day. Overheating can be serious - please be careful! Did we mention drink lots of water?
Daytime Weekday Lessons If you can get to the barn on a weekday before 2:30, have we got a deal for you! Beginning this fall, lessons will be discounted during those times. We are putting together groups for children & adults so please check with the Main Office if you are interested. Jumper Show (8/6) & NCDCTA (8/7) at MacNairs. Fun stuff! If you can't ride please come & spectate. Labor Day - looking ahead a little; there will be no Riding School classes on 9/5. |
4-H News for August

Giving back to the community
MacNair's hosted the NC State 4-H Judging Team last month. These rookie judges got a chance to scrutinize horses over fences, on the flat & in hand. As they discovered, judging real live horses is more of a challenge than judging a picture in a book. Thank you Thom, Emma, Haley, Julia, Kara & Laura for giving so generously of your time & helping train the judges of the future.

| Wildlife Watch

Although only four of them are pictured here, a herd of eight bucks made their way across the field one recent early morning. Remember - NO HUNTING on the farm!

|
Quote of the Month
"Your job needs to be done early enough to allow the horse time to focus on the fence without the rider's last minute distraction. If you are still talking to them in that last stride and finishing off preparations you should have done earlier, you are distracting them."
|
|

We love hearing from you. If you have a suggestion, an idea, or something we should be aware of, please take a few minutes to tell us.
If you have an item (or picture) that everyone should see or hear about, please post on our Facebook page! (It may show up here, too.)
Sincerely, the Staff at MacNair's Country Acres
