NY Realtor Indicted for Scheme to Sell Building to NYRR

A New York realtor has been indicted for conducting a real estate fraud scheme in which he struck several deals to sell a commercial building that he did not own. In one of the deals, Henry Vargas negotiated to sell the property to the New York Road Runners, the Manhattan not-for-profit that oversees the ING New York City Marathon. The Road Runners signed a contract to buy the property for $8.5 million and placed $1 million in escrow in anticipation of the deal's closing. The organization also spent approximately $300,000 on attorney's fees, real estate consultants, environmental studies and other services related to Vargas' bogus deal. More
Triathlon Australia Announces 2010 Challenge Series Schedule

Triathlon Australia announced this week a 2010 Challenge Series schedule that incorporates a revived elite domestic series and complements the recently launched ITU world championship race in Sydney. The 2010 series takes in five cities: Geelong, Canberra, Hobart, Sydney and Adelaide. Boulder Considers Trail User Fees for Non-residents

Boulder, CO is considering a pilot program to charge residents from outside Boulder County to use certain trails. The Boulder City Council and the Open Space and Mountain Parks Board of Trustees met Tuesday night in a rare joint session to discuss how to set priorities and continue to fund open space purchases. While the city has spent $208 million to purchase more than 45,000 acres of open space in and around Boulder since it began a systematic buy-up of land in the late 1960s, it still has more than 5,800 acres left in its master plan -- at an estimated cost of about $100 million. Among the suggestions for creating more revenue to fund those remaining purchases is to begin charging a fee for non-Boulder County residents who use certain city-owned trails. More

FILA Sets Goal to Become Number Four Sports Brand

FILA, the fashion and sports brand now based in Seoul, is aiming to become the world's fourth largest sports fashion brand in five years, its top executive said this week. "We aim to increase the global sales of FILA to $3 billion in the next five years and become the world's No. 4 sports brand," Yoon Yoon-soo, chairman of FILA Korea and GLBH Holdings, the parent company of FILA global operations, said at a news conference. FILA's global revenue is likely to reach $1.2 billion this year, a 20 percent increase from 2007 when Yoon took over the Italian sports brand. More
Alaska Mountain Bike Racer Attacked by Grizzly

A teenage girl riding in an all-night mountain bike race was badly injured early Sunday morning when a bear attacked her on a trail in Anchorage's Far North Bicentennial Park. Police officers with shotguns escorted medics into dark woods to retrieve the girl, who underwent surgery at Providence Alaska Medical Center. The girl is expected to survive, Anchorage Fire Department spokeswoman Cleo Hill said. More
IMG Apologizes for Mismeasured 10K, 5K Race Courses

The organisers of running events held on the same day as the Melbourne Marathon have apologised over a blunder which saw courses measured short. The apology to participants and sponsors from sports management group IMG was issued today, confirming that both the 10km and 5 km running courses were measured wrongly.Last Sunday, thousands of participants ran only 9.25km when they had entered for a 10km course, while the 5km course was short at 4.5km. The 10km event was contested by 4821 people and the 5km run and walk by 2742. More
Canadian Marathon Adjusts Times for Wrong Way Runners

Runners in October 4's Okanagan International Marathon in Kelowna, BC who accidently ran an extra loop will now have their times lowered to reflect the added distance. "Those small number [of runners] that we got requests from," said race director Tom Keogh, "we'll be adjusting their times." Confusion on the course resulted in some full-marathoners doing an extra 575-metre loop meant only for those doing a half-marathon. As a result, some runners who were using the Okanagan race to qualify for the Boston Marathon just missed making their qualifying times. More
