Sunshine, Rain & Snow
Snow in the Chiricahua Mountains at Sunglow Ranch

Well, every day can't be sunny - even in Arizona. We awoke one morning four or five weeks ago to find several inches of fresh snow on the ground. Though it was mostly gone by noon, it was the first stage of a 24-hour precipitation event that ended with a full pond and rain-soaked vegetation.

Water in the west is a precious commodity and the summer monsoons have not been kind to the southwest over the last two years. El NiƱo has now remedied that. Our pond is full, our vegetation lush (at least within the limits of the high desert) and the temps are seasonably mild. The rain that we've gotten portends a wetter spring than the past few years and suggests that we'll have a banner year for wildflowers. Wet or not, just remember that not a day goes by that the sun doesn't shine for at least a few hours at Sunglow Ranch. And stay tuned for details on our special wildflower weekends.

BEYOND THE SNAPSHOT
with Alan M. Thornton
April 21 - 25, 2010

Alan M. Thornton at Sunglow, Beyond the Snapshot

If you're an amateur photographer intrerested in improving skills and unleashing creativity to generate portraits and landscapes that are meaningfully better than past snapshots, this workshop is for you. Beyond the Snapshot will be both fun and creative and will help you to develop a distinctive eye that is all your own. Through demonstrations and assignments you will engage in creative exercises to learn to view everyday things from different perspectives and to begin to appreciate the possibilities that every scene offers. We will devote attention to basic shooting skills and composition, and we'll make sure you have a full understanding of every important function of your camera and how it influences exposure, depth of field, and other properties of an image.

Our backdrop will be the mountains and desert of southeastern Arizona, providing us with dramatic landscapes, small border towns and colorful local people as subjects. Daily classroom critiques will provide you with feedback and lead to further development of your creative eye. By the end of the workshop you will no longer be satisfied with just a snapshot.

Alan M. Thornton has been an advertising, editorial, and fine-art photographer for 16 years. He is also an accomplished teacher and workshop instructor. You can read more about him on his website.

Group Shot-Salon Weekend-Sunglow Ranch

Our first Salon weekend was a rousing success and we'd like to thank all of the participants who traveled far and wide to be a part of it. Their thoughtful and insightful  presentations on self-selected topics that included classic literature, media and politics, music, film and non-profit activities created a truly stimulating platform for group discussion and "out of the box" thinking.

If you would like more information on the next Salon weekend at Sunglow Ranch, please call us at 1.866.786.4569 or email us.
