We hope you had a very happy and restful holiday season.  As we are now in the New Year and it's the time for resolutions, we wonder if you've renewed your commitment to ROOTS, not just in terms of finances (which we always value) but also in terms of time and talent.

In the spirit of newness, work ensembles have embraced a new moniker - Innovation Ensembles!

There are several such Innovation Ensembles that are interested in your new energy.  Here they are, as well as their noble leaders.  If you are interested, please get in touch with them right away, or should we say "write away!"...

Carlton Turner at the NEAROOTS at the NEA

In December our very own Executive Director, Carlton Turner, was invited along with Helen De Michiel from the National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture and Jesse Rosen from The League of American Orchestras to respond to the 2008 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts.

The survey was conducted in partnership with the United States Census Bureau and asked more than 18,000 people 18 years of age and older about their frequency of arts engagement.  It has been conducted five times since 1982.

Representatives from 40 service organizations participated in the convening, including the Association of Art Museum Directors, Dance/USA, the Future of Music Coalition, the National Association of Latino Art and Culture, the National Center for Creativity in Aging, the National Network for Folk Arts in Education, and the New England Foundation for the Arts.

The event was webcast live from the NEA. If you would like to see the full presentation please click here. If you are interested in Carlton's response, you can download it here.

Artistic Assistance

Artistic Assistance enables individuals to enhance the artistic aspects of their work within their discipline. All artistic disciplines are eligible. These funds are designed to provide ROOTS members with a source of critical funding to attend a workshop, study with a mentor, develop new work, invest in equipment that is vital to their craft, or simply explore their creativity.

Artistic Assistance Cycle XIII had a vibrant set of applicants in October 2009.  More than $12,000 was requested for the roughly $7500 we had to distribute.  If you'd like to read the full slate of Artistic Assistance awards given for that round, please click here.

The deadline for applications for Cycle XIV of Artistic Assistance will be March 12, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. EST.
The application is available now on the ROOTS website. If you have any questions, please feel free to write to Shannon or call 404-577-1079.

Ken J MartinThe Grey Hound Bus Tour
By Ken J. Martin,
Artistic Assistance Project

This tour was placed together right at the heart of failure. The Pressure was killing me and I needed to rest so I thought of an escape, a real escape lol. I was going to leave Georgia for good, my whole family was having issues, I was having issues and I felt we needed to start anew somewhere else.

The People I met along my journey filled me up and passed me along. I was in need of inspiration and prayer. Seeking God became my daily meditation I didn't know Jesus liked the Greyhound. I guess he can spend more time with the people with the long waits and all lol.

Two of the greatest things about this trip were inspiration and action. The Brave New Voices Conference inspired me the most. To see the teens get up and release their souls showed me myself. I saw them speaking for a generation that no one is listening to. They even gave me an example of my life in many of their pieces I found myself walking off and just thinking about life and my decisions. BNV was my charge I now had another goal to pave the way for the youth to be truthful in their art, truthful about themselves and never having to back down from their stance.
