Nancy Fraser's
deepest desire is to live
an authentic and fulfilling life: exploring what it means to actualize
her potential and develop her capacities as a human being so she can
take effective action in the world. For as long as she can remember, she
spent a large part of her time asking questions, seeking answers.
She has a degree in philosophy from Emory University in Atlanta, a
17-year career working as a Perfusionist (trained on the job) with an
open-heart surgical team in Orlando, Florida.
Retiring at 37 after
her mother died, she started exploring alternative methods of healing
and worked with a tool called the Trinity
Table. The Trinity Table
assisted people in reaching a deep meditative state quickly, simply
by using motion and sound. She learned to work with energy and
sound quite naturally, and assisted participants with emotional and
physical releases, while discovering the value of deep relaxation. In 1997 she met a meditation teacher... MORENancy

How To Avoid Toxic Sunscreens by Wendy Tran

After many years of tanning and sun-worshipping, reports came to
light that said almost any amount of exposure to the sun would, and had
resulted in skin cancer. Since then (several decades) we've been told
that the sun is dangerous and we should cover up our skin anytime we go
out. It was decided by experts that the use of sunscreen would prevent
skin cancer and protect your health. This was recommended despite of a
lack of any adequate safety testing of the chemicals in sunscreens.
Commercial sunscreens popped up everywhere and a new billion dollar
industry was born.
Recently, a study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
revealed that 97% of Americans are contaminated with a widely used
sunscreen ingredient called oxybenzone that has been linked to
allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage. A companion study
published just one day earlier revealed that this chemical is linked to
low birth weight in baby girls whose mothers are exposed during
pregnancy. Oxybenzone is also a penetration enhancer, a chemical that
helps other chemicals penetrate the skin, which eventually make their
way into the bloodstream.
Two University of California scientists believe that the rise in skin
cancer is linked with increased use of chemical sunscreens. They say
chemical sunscreens offer a false sense of security resulting in
excessive sun exposure, which is risk #1. Now, it seems that risk #2 is
the toxic chemicals in the sunscreens themselves.
Another factor to consider is that the application of sunscreens
interfere with the skin's ability to produce vitamin D and can cause a
vitamin D deficiency that can greatly impact your health.
Ingredients in sunscreens are not regulated... Sunscreens, like other cosmetics, are not regulated in a strict sense,
but most companies display claims that assure you their products are
safe. Testing may involve as little as testing the ingredients to
determine if the chemicals cause swelling, rashes, or other acute
reactions. Manufacturers are not
required to test the ingredients in their products to determine if they
cause long-term, negative health effects such as cancer, disruption of
hormones or the inability to have a healthy child.
Over the past decade, many scientists studying cancer have come to
the conclusion that the use of sunscreen chemicals may be increasing the
incidence of cancer and that sunlight exposure may actually decrease
human cancer rates and improve your health.
It now appears that many heavily-used chemical sunscreens may
actually increase cancers by virtue of their free radical generating
properties. And more insidiously, many commonly used sunscreen chemicals
have strong estrogenic actions that may cause serious problems in
sexual development and adult sexual function, and may further increase
cancer risks.
Organic chemists have long been long aware of the dangers of
compounds in chemical sunscreens, but this was ignored by the manufacturers of
commercial sunscreens and most of the medical establishment. Healthy alternatives... The best-known physical blocks are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide,
naturally occurring minerals more effective than some chemical
sunscreens. They work as a barrier against sun damage. An alternative is
to choose only products that are made from non-toxic natural or organic
materials. Non-Toxic natural or organic products do not contain
hazardous chemicals, so they are safe and healthy. One of the easiest
ways to make a positive impact on your planet and your life is to use
safe, non-toxic personal care products. There are many simple lifestyle changes you can make to radically
decrease your risk of sunburn, such as choosing your essential fatty
acids wisely, increasing raw vegetables loaded with skin protecting
antioxidant phytonutrients, and avoiding processed foods and sugars. Additionally you can use clothing wisely to avoid sun-induced skin
damage. Wearing a hat keeps the sun off your face and the very thin skin
around your eyes which is particularly sensitive to photo-aging skin
damage from the sun. Natural sunlight is the best way to get your vitamin D so try to
spend small amounts of time in the sun without any sunscreen. Vitamin D
plays a crucial role in your overall health and well-being. Safe sun
exposure is the key.

Yoga and Pilates Back at the WWE C ??
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ With as many Yoga and Pilates studios in WNC as there are Massage Therapists, Acupuncturists, and Coffee Houses, we wondered what we could do to make our Yoga and Pilates classes stand out from the rest, just like we do the rest of our services. Then we talked to Katherine Dowdney, a Pilates Instructor with Blissful Body (also a Moving Women performer), and Jessica Marks, a Ortho Bionony Specialist at Happy Body, in W.Asheville. They gave us just the answer we were looking for! Jessica and Katherine are both experts in the field of movement and the body.Both have extensive anatomy and physiology training in relation to
pregnancy (pre and post), seniors, and various other special
populations. They specialize in finding movement that is safe, fun, and
helpful for any body type or ability. They strongly believe that bodywork paired with movement leads to a happy and healthy
body, no matter what stage of life women may be in. Jessica and Katherine lean heavily on their experience as dancers, understanding the connections of the body in a
deep way. The physical body is a starting point to help connect others
to living a more complete, present, and aware life and we work
diligently to help find a myriad of ways for women to embody themselves
fully. Katherine and Jessica have such a variety of skills and knowledge
between them, that they are able to offer Pilaltes and Yoga classes at
the Women's Wellness & Education Center which are tailored to what
suits the majority of our community.
Please visit the new Yoga / Pilates page on our Website and check out
all the possibilities for classes at the WWEC, then complete the survey
at the bottom of the page, so we can get you started on the road to a
more blissful, and a happier body!! |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~MusicTogether
 June 12-8/7
Saturday Mornings 10-11
Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and the adults who love them. First offered to the public in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement.
Music Together classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. All children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning. By emphasizing actual music experiences rather than concepts about music, Music Together introduces children to the pleasures of making music instead of passively receiving it from CDs or TV.
Central to the Music Together approach is that young children learn best from the powerful role model of parents/caregivers who are actively making music. The program brings families together by providing a rich musical environment in the classroom and by facilitating family participation in spontaneous musical activity at home within the context of daily life.
Music Together is committed to helping families, caregivers, and early childhood professionals rediscover the pleasure and educational value of informal music experiences. All our teachers have successfully completed Music Together's training program. Music Together applies the latest research in early childhood music development to the program. A curriculum pioneer since 1987.
Music Together was founded with the goal of providing the highest quality music and movement experiences to as many young children as possible, involving their parents, primary caregivers and early childhood professionals in the educational process. Music Together is therefore dedicated to the thorough and professional support of Music Together licensees and teachers and their work with children and families. This support includes training, business mentoring, networking services, national and regional promotion, customer referrals, business technology, ongoing research and development, the production of audio, video and print materials, and the distribution of musical instruments and related products.
