President's Message
Camille Rinato

I wish to extend a warm welcome-back to all of our Chapter members and friends - trusting your summer was most enjoyable and that your start to the post-summer season (can't say "autumn" just yet) is filled with excitement, learning, and success.

Thank you very much for participating in the survey we conducted a few weeks back.  Your thoughtful responses drove the planning for this year's programs.  Please mark your calendars for our annual social kick-off on September 23, a full-day workshop on October 29, that can be used toward Master Practitioner status, and a slate of engaging and mind-opening programs throughout the year.

We look forward to re-connecting with everyone in person on September 23!

Developing MBTIŪ Expertise
Len Gomberg

Many of you joined this Chapter for the express purpose of developing and/or refining your knowledge of type. The Consulting Psychologists Press (CPP) makes available training and credentialing programs so you can become more adept at using the MBTIŪ and understanding the many applications it has. Here are some resources for you to explore.

Counseling to Type Workshops
Oriented to individuals who counsel clients on how the MBTIŪ can help them make career decisions, these workshops are open to novices and experienced MBTIŪ practitioners. They last six hours and are typically offered at college campuses. For a current workshop schedule, go to the CPP website at:
https://www.cpp.com/products/CPP_Workshops.aspx.

MBTIŪ Certification
CPP requires specialized training to ensure that those who use the MBTIŪ with clients do so ethically and effectively. In order to purchase and administer the MBTIŪ, individuals must be educationally eligible and successfully complete an MBTIŪ Certification Program. Upon meeting those criteria, they will be granted the designation Certified Practitioner. Visit CPP at: https://www.cpp.com/qual/index.aspx for information. Approved MBTIŪ Certification Programs are offered by four agencies and are typically four days in length. For specifics on program availability, visit https://www.cpp.com/contents/mbti_certification.aspx.

MBTIŪ Master Practitioner Credential
The Master Practitioner Credential represents the highest level of MBTIŪ proficiency and those who achieve that designation will be placed on a searchable network of experts known as the MBTI Referral Network. Becoming a Master Practitioner requires completion of an MBTIŪ Certification Program, 40 hours of continuing education in approved MBTIŪ advanced training programs, and 40 hours of practical application of the MBTIŪ as a workshop instructor or in individual/group counseling with clients. There is a one-time application fee of $250. Please visit http://www.MBTImasterpractitioner.org/ for additional guidance and resources.

Connecting with Clients by Phone
Virtual Coaching with MBTIŪ
Barbara Stein

How do you connect with a voice on the phone when it belongs to a new client?  How can you compensate for all the missing information and cues available at in-person meetings? I recently conducted a low-tech telephone course through APTInternational called "MBTIŪ Feedback by Phone" to explore some answers. Here are some strategies:
  • Speak to your client's type
  • Monitor your personal training challenges
  • Think about potential client concerns entering the session
  • Be welcoming, enthusiastic, friendly, supportive
  • Ask lots of questions to fill in for missing information
  • Listen, Listen, Listen
  • Don't interrupt or finish people's sentences
  • Monitor your tone of voice-get rid of any edge or frustrations from the day
  • Wait out the silences.  Allow your client time to think.  You can comment on the silence and ask what's been going through their mind.
  • Anticipate all that could go wrong and be prepared (e.g., a dying phone battery, a failed connection, & time zone differences)
MOST IMPORTANT:  STAY FOCUSED AND IN ROLE.  RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO MULTITASK!  Bring yourself back if you start to wander.  If you are connecting with someone overseas and it's 3:00 a.m., get dressed.  Go to your workspace.

Finally, provide closure.  Ask what they've learned.  Let them know you enjoyed the conversation.  Provide contact information for further discussion or questions.

Barbara Stein, formerly of McKinsey & Company, is an MBTIŪ Master Practitioner.  While at McKinsey, she delivered more than 2000 MBTIŪ debriefs.  She also conducted numerous virtual team-building sessions using the MBTIŪ Team Report to explore team dynamics & improve communication. You can contact her at 347-414-3252.
