President's Message
Camille Rinato
The APT NYC year 2010-2011 is poised to be a rewarding one
with exciting plans for programs, education, marketing, communication, and
philanthropic offerings spearheaded by new and returning board members.
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be sending
you a survey to identify our chapter's programming needs and wants. I would like to request a quick turnaround
with your thoughtful responses to enable us to plan successfully for you. In addition, the chapter will be reaching
out with easy opportunities to participate during the year. With your help, this will be another
fulfilling year for the chapter. I look forward to working with you! ----------------------- Camille Rinato is the incoming APT NYC Chapter President 2010-2011 Contact her at camillerinato@hotmail.com

Coming Up...
Last year's kickoff event was so successful that we decided to do it again! This free event will be held in September, 2010 to launch the start of chapter programs for the new calendar year. Last year we met at Rosie O'Grady's in midtown Manhattan and had a great time. Don't miss this opportunity to meet and network with others who have an interest in MBTIŽ.

Member News Comparing Type and 360 Feedback
Yaron Prywes
I
recently authored a blog series discussing Psychological Type and 360 Degree
Feedback. These two tools are among the most popular and powerful interventions
available to practitioners seeking to improve personal and workplace
effectiveness. However, their intersection is rarely addressed. In this 3-part series, the reader can see similarities, important differences, and evidence of how these tools can
best be used in tandem. Here you see an illustration of how feedback from peers, direct reports, customers and your supervisor can provide increased awareness that leads to improved performance. As you read this series, I hope you will find the information about MBTIŽ, along with my use of illustrations and personal
examples, helpful to you and your clients. Yaron Prywes co-founded Leader NationŠ, an online leadership development portal that empowers professionals to launch their own 360 feedback campaign. Visit their website at http://LeadershipNation.com. |

The Benefit of Unifying Personality Theories Eric Bolden Personality theory has two common theories of type. One still uses
Hippocrates' four names, and is generally based on two different behavioral
dimensions. The four temperaments were originally measured in terms of a
person's "response-time delay" and "response-time sustain".
Long delay became what we know as introversion, and short delay became extroversion. Sustain is often referred to in terms of people vs.
task-orientation or "responsiveness". This tells us how
"responsive" a person is to others. So this model identified Sanguine and
Choleric as extroverts, Melancholic and Phlegmatic as introverts; Sanguine and
Phlegmatic as
people-focused, and Choleric and Melancholic as
task-focused. Here, we had our original temperament matrix.
If we look at the Consulting Psychologists
Publications Inc. (CPP Inc.) organization, which owns several personality instruments, we
see two in particular that stand out. One is the popular Myers-Briggs Type
IndicatorŽ, created by Dr. Isabel Myers and Catherine Briggs. There is also the
Fundamental Interpersonal Relationship Orientation-BehaviorŽ, created by Dr.
William Schutz around the same time Myers introduced MBTIŽ.
The two instruments appear vastly different.
FIROŽ uses three matrices measuring "expressed" and "wanted"
behavior, which are how much a person tends to approach others for interaction,
and how much they want to be approached by others. The three areas of
interaction are Inclusion (social skills), Control (leadership and
responsibilities) and Affection (deep personal relationships). MBTIŽ has its
four dimensions of Extroversion vs. Introversion, Sensing vs. iNtuition,
Feeling vs. Thinking, and Judgment vs. Perception.
While not originally dealing in
"temperament" (inborn behavioral dispositions), both systems have had variations
of temperament theory "mapped" to them. David Keirsey mapped four
temperaments, loosely comparing them to the ancient ones: SJ=Melancholic; SP=Sanguine; NT=Phlegmatic;
NF=Choleric.s. My proposal is that, the Interaction Styles are FIRO's Inclusion, and
Keirsey's temperaments are Control.
The purpose of correlating the two systems together is that it gives an
additional perspective in type behavior, and shows the blends of temperaments
in each. If you see each type as a blend of temperaments, rather than two
separate groups of renamed "temperaments" and "styles", it
gives you a sense of the mix of behaviors in the types. This is one way of
unifying different, useful versions of personality theory. |
Change in Chapter Dues APT NYC Board of Directors
Our Chapter Board team has important news to share
from our parent organization, APT International (APTi).
Addition of a New Chapter
Affiliate $15.00 Fee APTi has instituted a new $15.00 Chapter Affiliate annual fee to help with the
administrative overhead expenses that APTi incurs to support us as a
Chapter. This $15.00 fee is required
for any "Chapter only" member who is not also a current paid member of
APTi. APTi has its own dues structure
which, in 2010 is $110.00 annually, and payable separately at www.aptinternational.org. For Those Who Already Joined This Year When this fee was announced, our Chapter Board decided to pay this $15.00 fee from
our Chapter treasury for those of you who had already joined this year. This was a new and unexpected fee and we felt that it was the right
thing to do, as the Chapter dues you signed up for were valued at $50.00
annually. Our Chapter Treasurer was asked to submit one check for all "Chapter
only" members to APTi by February 28, 2010. We paid for 36 "Chapter only" members.
What Happens Now Going forward, the dues of Chapter Only Members renewing
with us will be valued at $65.00 and we will send the affiliation fee portion
of $15.00 directly to APTi for you. Any member joining now, as a Chapter only member, will
be asked to pay $65.00 effective immediately.
Your membership is important to us. As always, we want to keep you informed of
decisions and changes that impact our chapter.
