Moving Inward
"You must teach your children that the ground beneath their feet is the ashes of your grandfathers. So that they will respect the land, tell your children that the earth is rich with the lives of our kin. Teach your children what we have taught our children, that the earth is our mother. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. If men spit upon the ground, they spit upon themselves."

~ Chief Seattle (c. 1786-1866), Suquamish Nation

"For enlightenment to happen the perceiver must turn right around and wake up to the fact that he is face to face with his own nature - that HE IS IT. The spiritual seeker ultimately finds that he was already at the destination, that he himself IS what he had been seeking and he was in fact already home."

Issue # 19 April 2009
Dear Friends of Inner Fire Yoga,

Oh happy days!  Spring has sprung!  One of the reasons I happily moved back to the Midwest (from CA) was because I missed the change of seasons.  Spring fever is unavoidably pleasant.

First and foremost:  congratulations to the recent Personal Revolutionaries!  It takes intense dedication for most of us to achieve our yoga practice goals.  We commend you.  And, of course, get ready for our next Personal Revolution beginning May 1:  31 classes in 31 days!  As usual, sign up on the poster in the hallway.  Go for it yogis!  You CAN do it!

Every April we throw a big celebration:  the Abundance Celebration.  I hope you will join us on April 25th and 26th!  We are sharing our abundance by donating all proceeds from the weekend to charity:  The Family Centers of Madison, a charity that benefits local children and families in distress.  So please plan to join us for a free (by donation) yoga class or two, making bids for items in the silent auction, and partying with us from 5-8 on Sat. You can read the list of auction items below (and see more details about the weekend's events).  Thank you for donating (it's not too late if you'd like to make a donation to the silent auction).

Our neighbors at 4 Lakes Driving School have asked us to kindly alert our patrons to drive mindfully through our parking lot as the student drivers not only need safety but also need a good example by yogi-drivers.  So, please drive slowly, refrain from using the cell phone while driving, and also walk mindfully (along the side of the lot rather than down the center) in our parking lot.  Thank you very much for paying attention to this matter.

There is much more news to share, and I trust you will peruse the newsletter to find out about EVERYTHING that is happening in our wonderful yoga community.

May spring bring a feeling of blooming and opening to us all - with a smile on our faces.

Student Spotlight

Keesia Hyzer"As I transition from my 35 years of teaching to searching for my new identity as a retiree, Inner Fire Yoga has become an integral part of my life. I've been attending yoga at Marit's studios for six years, but in the last few months I've been doing classes
with much more frequency, sometimes six or even seven times per week. As a result, I've lost weight and feel stronger in parts of my body that I've never even felt before (shoulders, wrists, hips, etc.). But most importantly, my increased yoga practice has helped to ease my mind and allow me to be in the moment rather than worry about what I should be doing to be productive.

I enjoy the diversity and challenge of all the classes at Inner Fire: pounding through the 10:30 intermediate flow on Sundays with as much grace as I can muster, relaxing and deepening into the asanas in yin, and disciplining myself to quiet my "monkey
mind" in the bikram series. Recently, I've discovered the tranquility of the Inner Fire Flow sessions. Because it's an integration of bikram yoga and flow, IFF strikes a balance combining the best elements of both. Like bikram, the IFF asanas are
sequential, but less rigidly or predictably so. I find that I'm not always anticipating the next sequence as I am in bikram. The flow between the asanas creates a sort of gentle, quiet dance and when the hour has expired, I feel as if I've had a solid workout, but with tranquility. I will continue to practice all the forms of yoga offered at Inner Fire, including the balancing act of Inner Fire Flow."

Meet New IFY Instructor...
LisaLisa Stephenson

I became interested in yoga in a round about way. While a student at UW-Madison I dove into a daily meditation practice and took a few yoga classes, both of which piqued my interest in the religions and cultural traditions of India. In the summer of 2003 I studied abroad in Kerala, South India, and this is where I first started practicing yoga on a regular basis. I continued to take yoga classes through the rest of my time in college and tried practicing some on my own, but it wasn't until after graduating- when I was introduced to vinyasa yoga- that I really began to experience the transformational side of yoga asana. My understanding of the power of yoga only deepened when I had the good fortune to practice with Ana Forrest in Madison in the spring of 2005. I had never worked so hard in a yoga class before and I knew I had found a style of yoga that would help me to go deep into the physical, mental, and spiritual realms of my practice. When it became clear to me that my post-college corporate job wasn't really my passion, I decided to make the leap to become a yoga teacher. I see teaching yoga as the perfect way to combine my life-long goal of working as an educator with my love of the yoga practice. So, in October 2006 I attended the demanding- but very rewarding!- Forrest Yoga Teacher Training in Seattle, Washington. I have been teaching yoga classes in Madison ever since, and am very excited to be joining the Inner Fire Community!

In my classes I enjoy focusing on strengthening the body through energetic sun salutations and also time spent in long pose holds. I encourage students to build a feeling connection with their body and an awareness of mind so that they can practice yoga intelligently and in a way that is personal. I believe that the way we experience poses and the yoga practice in general can be very reflective of how we are in our life off the mat. Learning tools that enable us to breathe deeply, create space in the body, and calm the mind are some of the greatest gifts I hope students will take from my class.

Yoga Therapy Now Available at IFY!

JoanNow available for private yoga sessions --Yoga Therapy is a melding of yogic  and Ayurvedic tools for healing and well being.

Yoga and Ayurveda are sister sciences in the Indian Vedic tradition of health in the tradition known as Sanatana Dharma, or path to the Eternal Truth.  Although Yoga has been known in the West for over a hundred years,  Ayurveda has only been studied in the past few decades.  In the Indian tradition, the two are one.  The yogic tradition is based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the eight limbs of Ashtanga leading toward the path of spiritual liberation.  The tradition of Ayurveda, or "the science of life", focuses on creating a balanced, vibrant state of healthy body, mind, and spirit.  The knowledge and use of both can help towards living fully with vitality, expanded awareness, in harmony with the laws of nature, the cosmos and our fellow beings.

An Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist is able to use methods from both sciences for healing of the body, mind, and spirit.  The methods are individually tailored for maximum benefit according to the individual constitution, or 'prakruti'.  The diagnosis of the individual's unique
constitution is imperative in helping the individual restore balance and health to their life.

Using patient intake and assessment forms, the therapist prescribes various methods to managing a variety of conditions which may include injury, muscular and skeletal disorders, stress related illnesses, digestive disorders, cancer, depression, anxiety, emotional disorders, addiction, grief/loss, diabetes, MS, high blood pressure, eating disorders, chronic fatigue, nausea, low back pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel, knee and hip injury, and pain management.  Full postural and movement assessments from the therapist can help identify the source of physical problems.  Yoga asanas are prescribed that are appropriate for the novice yogi or advanced.

A diagnosis can incorporate any of the tools appropriate from the Yogic and Ayurvedic tradition including:
~Asana
~Pranayama
~Meditation
~IRest Therapy or Yoga Nidra
~Restorative yoga
~Guided Visualization
~ Cleansing practices
~Yogic and Ayurvedic diets

IFY Yoga Instructor Joan Bliefernicht recently completing an additional 3oo hour training in Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy at Ananda Seva in Santa Rosa, California.  She is now a Yoga Therapist registered at the 500 hour level with Yoga Alliance, and she is a member of the International
Association of Yoga Therapists.  As a teacher, she has seen healing and experienced healing in the yoga studio.  She is committed to work with both the student in class and the individual in private yoga therapy to help them find health and balance in their life in a safe manner.  She believes in our society that we all struggle with health and balance and that no one can live a perfect life but that we can always benefit from a deeper understanding or our health at all levels.
