From the Cellar: This Week @ the Wine Bar Sun Singer offers more than 25 wines by the glass every day of the week.
Here's a sampling of this week's selections at the Sun Singer Wine Bar.
Drink it here, take a bottle home!
Special Feature: Pinot Noir
CAPIAUX Pinot Noir 'Freestone Hill' 2006 Russian River Valley, California Good bright dark red. Highly aromatic nose combines raspberry, wet stone, Asian spices and smoked meat; this, too, reminded me of a Chambolle, but on the Morey side of the appellation. Big, rich, dense and sweet, with a pliant, silky, seamless texture and a lovely light touch. Finishes with firm but fine tannins and lingering spice. 93 points ~Stephen Tanzer
By-the-Glass WHITE
Duckhorn 'Decoy' Sauvignon Blanc '09, Napa Valley, California A case of pure fruit, the pristine '09 Decoy Sauvignon Blanc is such a pretty white with serious intentions; citrusy with hints of grapefruit peel and lemongrass; bright finish.
Final Week! Malvira
'Treuve' Sauvignon-Chardonnay '06, Langhe, Italy A blend of 40% Sauvignon, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Arneis, Treuve delights the
nose with the pleasing scent of newly cut grass, grapefruit peel and apricot.
Full-bodied with a long finish.
Final Week! Qupé Marsanne '07, Santa Ynez Valley, California Flinty, minerally and with just a hint of green pear and orange rind. The wine has refreshing acidity and impeccable balance.
Esterlina Chardonnay '06, Russian River Valley, California A combination of bright tropical fruit, a bit of oak and great acidity. The mouth also has apple, pineapple and a light coconut flavor, with a hint of richness from the oak barrels used for almost one-third of this wine's aging.
PRETTY in PINK Ken Forrester Rose '08, Stellenbosch, South Africa Overwhelms the nose with a magnitude of strawberry, rose petal and cherry aromas that follow through on the palate, lingering to a crisp and refreshingly delicate finish.
REDS Saintsbury Pinot Noir '07, Carneros, California Aromas of spcy red and black fruit seasoned by aging in Burgundy-made barrels. It has a plump middle, fine grained tannins, nicely balanced acidity, grace and elegance. Jip Jip Rocks Shiraz '08, Padthaway, Australia A rich powerful nose of cassis with overtones of spice and cedar. Lush, ripe palate dominated by black fruits, cherry and dark chocolate. Full bodied with savory, integrated fruit tannins and persistent finish.
Spectator Top 100...again Seghesio 'Sonoma' Zinfandel '08, California Vibrant display of acidity enhances the briary raspberry and blackberry varietal expression. Lush, velvety mouth feel interwoven with fine, integrated tannins and spicy undertones creates a smooth richness. Trentadue 'La Storia' Meritage Red '05, Alexander Valley, California The opening is intense with ripe plums, Bing cherries followed by smoky, chocolaty aromas, leather, brown sugar, molasses and slightly herbal nuances. The body is full with well-structured tannins and balanced acidity leading to a long, firm finish.
Share the Mystery? Stratton Lummis Cabernet Sauvignon '05, Napa Valley, California From the heart of the Napa Valley-a blend of Oakville and Rutherford. Big nose of blackberry fruit and cassis with broad, sweet, classic flavors here of blackcurrant with a little spice, dust and supple tannins. Forward, juicy and full of character.
Last Six BottlesDownstate Fortress Petite Syrah '07, Red Hills, Lake County, California Classic balance and elegance with smooth tannins framing the variety's wildly exotic flavors of blackberries, blueberries, bacon, tobacco, grilled mushrooms, tamari, anise and lots of black pepper.

Beer Culture: 3 Beers from Italy The latest buzz in the brewing world? Italian
microbreweries! Here are some examples of the unique products that are
coming out of the vibrant Italian beer culture.
Troll Dał: Saison Style The Dał is a
mythologic animal that lived high up in the Alps; It is a kind of chamois, and
is featured in many fairy tales in our region of Italy.
The color is orange-yellow with a long lasting white head. Aromas of tropical fruit, hoppy bittterness, citrus and notes of pine and resins. On the palate, a combination of fruity sweetness with lingering bitterness that makes Dau very refreshing and thirst quenching.
Dau pairs well with seafood dishes (both fried and
fresh), goat cheese and fresh summer salads.
Almond' 22 Torbata: Smoked Barley Wine Almond' 22 is a
small micro brewery on the green hills of Pescara
in Abruzzo. Torbata was created
to indulge a passion for whiskey peat.
Light and hazy in color with fruity aromas from chestnut
honey and hops harmonizing with notes of roasted and caramelized malts. The spices and raw cane sugars come from the
fair trade and are carefully selected; the honeys come from the green mountains
and hills of the region.
This bottle conditioned beer has an amazing and
complex evolution as time passes. Good with a cigar or dark chocolate (minimum
75% cocoa).
Grado Plato Chocarrubica: Oatmeal Stout Chocarrubica
is a smooth, quaffable, top-fermenting oatmeal stout creation of deep black
color. The adding of Venezuelan cocoa beans, carob from the island of Sicily,
and large amount of oats {over 30%} gives this unusual Italian creation its
silky, chocolaty, and roasty character.
Chocarrubica displays notes
of banana and tropical fruits on the nose, and a surprisingly subtle chocolate
profile, perhaps tempered by the slightly more savory carob. The carbonation is
pleasantly present without interrupting the smooth character of the beer.
This beer pairs well with chocolate desserts, but
also with seasoned cheese.

At the Deli: Carr Valley
Cranberry Chipotle Cheddar
Master Cheesemaker Sid Cook at Carr Valley Cheese has done it again. He has created another unique and interesting variety of flavored American cheddar: Chipotle Cranberry Cheddar. One of Sid's newest creations, it has already won a Bronze Award at the U.S. Championship Cheese Contest.
Chipotle
Cranberry Cheddar uses a robustly flavored white cheddar. The sweetness
of the cranberries contrasts nicely with the spicy, smoky flavor of the
chipotle peppers. Carr Valley's website describes the cheese as having
the flavor of Texas barbecue sauce. One writer described the cheese as a "mouth party." At the very least, this cheddar with be a hit at any party.
