California Dreaming: Meet the Meekers! Wine Tasting & Bottle Signing Thursday, June 10th 5:00 - 7:00pm
Charlie and Molly are a couple of wild cards with lots of great stories to tell about wine and life. Join us Thursday to sample their wines including Handprint Merlot and Four Kings. Buy bottles that night and have them signed!
A Little History... Charlie Meeker was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, where he learned about great wine from his father. After graduating from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, Charlie moved to Los Angeles, and ever since, he's been a distracted man.
Although Charlie and his wife Molly bought their first vineyard in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley in 1977, and opened their winery in 1984, it wasn't until 1999 that Charlie was able to be a full time winemaker in Sonoma. Oh sure, he made the wine from 1984 to 1999, but he had to live in L.A. and keep his day job - first as an entertainment attorney, then as a film producer, and ultimately president of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in order to finance his winery habit.
Finally, in 1990 when Charlie became President of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, this two-career life became too much, and the Meekers hired a full time winemaker for the winery.
In 1999 Molly and Charlie left Los Angeles and moved full time to Sonoma County. Molly now manages the winery's business affairs, while Charlie has resumed his active winemaking role as co-winemaker with the winery's winemaker, Matt Blankenheim.

Bin Check:
A Few Lovable Cabs!
Scanning the shelves this week uncovered this collection of cabernets either new to the store or returning at an even better value. Take a browse then stop by and take a bottle. You've got some good drinking ahead.
Lola Kay Red Wine 2008 Napa Valley, California $21.99 Lola Kay is essentially the second label of Rubissow a Mt. Veeder based producer that has been doing impressive things with estate grown Mountain fruit dating back to the mid 80's. With the Lola Kay imprint they source their fruit from friends, neighbors and other local vineyards that have some extra high quality fruit they can't use for one reason or another. This first release is a blend of Cabernet Franc (52%), Merlot (35%), Syrah (10%), Cabernet Sauvignon (2.5%), and Petit Verdot (0.5%). It was aged in all French oak, 40% of the barrels were new. Spicy, high-toned red berry fruit dominates a mouthfeel that's bright, clean and (dare we say?) fun. It's the sort of wine that asks you to take another sip, and at this price, you'll have a heckuva time turning it down.
Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Napa-Mendocino-Sonoma, California $18.49 Reg. $21.49 Aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, begins with ever-changing aromas, characteristic of mountain fruit. Ripe plum and lush vanilla overtones back aromatics thick with exotic spice and black currant fruit. This opulent palate is reminiscent of classic Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon. This bright and robust wine with superb balance and structure is full of lush plum and cherry flavors, layered with vanilla oak that extend into an elegant finish.
Raymond Family Classic Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Napa-Sonoma-Lake, California $19.99 Full-bodied and well-structured with bold tannins and a spicy pepper finish. The nose exudes rich aromas of black tea, black currant, and marionberry alongside just a hint of eucalyptus. This rich, powerful wine has a lot of structure and is beautifully layered with flavors of plum, anise, and red currants balanced by firm tannins and a spicy black pepper finish that will allow this wine to stand up to a gorgeous cut of marbled steak.
Substance Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Washington State $20.99 The 2008 Cabernet is like putting on your favorite pair of jeans. Immediately familiar and comfortable. The 2008 Cab is medium bodied, with more herbs and earth than red and black fruit. Its soft, elegant and reminds you of home.
Merkin Vineyards 'Chupacabra' Red Blend '06 California $24.99 Reg. $27.99 Merkin Vineyards is owned by novice winemaker Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of the bands TOOL and A PERFECT CIRCLE and descended from Northern Italian winemakers. The Merkin Vineyards "Chupacabra" is a shape-shifter wine, evolving vintage after vintage. In 2006 it contains a large percentage of top-notch Caduceus Sensei fruit. Bold and mysterious, the wine shows both a light and dark side. From black fruit, tobacco and mushroom aromas and flavors to kiwi, grapefruit and nettle on the lighter end, this smoky, complex red is enticing from first sip.
Hudson Shah 'CAB' Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Rattlesnake Hills, Washington $13.99 The Hudson Shah CAB is open and forward, showing juicy cherry and strawberry flavors. With clean, precise, muscular fruit notes from Rattlesnake Hills grapes, this toasty Cabernet is infused with rich coffee and mocha. The finish is elegant with a soft barrel tannin touch.
MORE GOOD DEALS (For more descriptions jump here!)
GAZELA Vinho Verde Selo de Garantia, Portugal $6.99 Reg. $7.99 Low price and low alcohol. Cool and refreshing Vinho Verde is the summer's hot wine. With only 9% alcohol, it's a perfect quaffer for a warm day. The bouquet is a lively mix of citrus and floral aromas. Soft flavors of apricot and grapefruit are perked up by the sparkling bubbles and balanced by delightful crisp acidity and strong minerality. It makes an ideal aperitif and a perfect picnic wine - you don't even need a corkscrew!
ORDONEZ 'Botani' Moscatel Seco '08 Malaqa, Spain $16.99 Reg.$19.99
MUSSEL BAY Sauvignon Blanc 2008 Marlborough, New Zealand $11.99 Reg. $14.99 CAPANNACCE Rosso della Maremma Toscana 2005 Piedmont, Italy $14.99 Reg. $17.99

At the Deli: Morbier (more-bee-AY)
from France
Morbier is an aromatic and surprisingly mild French cow's milk AOC cheese defined by the dark vein of vegetable ash streaking through it middle. Morbier, which is aged for at least 60 days, pleasantly confounds expectations. Contrary to its smell, Morbier has a mild taste and leaves a wonderful, nutty aftertaste. Morbier is excellent served with Gewürztraminer or Pinor Noir.
Stop by for a sample at the Sun Singer Deli.
