In Brief

Sparkling Suggestions on a Budget
Whether it's a barbecue or a brunch for a large group of friends and you want to serve sparkling without spending an arm and a leg consider two economical favorites:  cava and Cremant de Bourgogne.  Cava is a sparkling wine from the Penedes region of Spain.  It is made in the traditional Champagne method, but from the local grape varieties macabeo, xarel-lo and parellada. A brut or extra brut cava is a good choice for a large group  - you can expect crisp, citrusy fruit with a touch of minerality and earthiness.  Or try a Cremant de Bourgogne from Burgundy, France made from chardonnay and pinot noir grapes and featuring nice apple fruit and just baked bread flavors. The best part of these wine?  The price.  Many examples range from $9 to $17 a bottle.

Both cava and Cremant de Bourgogne are also great for making Kir royale cocltails.  Just add a teaspoon of cold creme de cassis to each glass of bubbly and turn a party into a festival!

This Weekend: Local and Regional Attractions at Sun Singer
With Memorial Day in the rear view and July 4th looming on the horizon, Sun Singer is hosting two events this weekend with both local and regional appeal.  Our Sensational Saturday Tasting will feature the wines of Owl Creek Winery located at Cobden in Southern Illinois.  Owl Creek gained some national notoriety this past year when several of it's wines were featured at the Obama Inauguration.  Come and hear the story of how a little Southern Illinois winery burst into the national limelight! Also this Sunday, we'll be hosting a book signing for local author Michale Callahan of his book Too Politically Sensitive. Details of the book signing and Sensational Saturday can be found below.  We hope you'll join us for both of these events!

Best Wishes,

Mark, Jackie & the Sun Singer Staff

Wine Bar:
Weekly Wine Update

Beginning Wednesday we'll update the wines available at our Wine Bar. This is going to be a 'White' week with these additions:

Ninet de Pena Viognier '06, France
Bursts from the glass with sublime white peach, raspberry candy, and orange blossom aromas. Suave, hugely spicy, and rich, this viognier glides sensually across the palate unleashing waves of apricot, white peach, and floral flavors.

Perelada 'Roc' Blanco '06, Catalunya, Spain
An intense aroma with notes of flowers (roses) and fine herbs. It is round, persistent and fresh on the palate, reminding of citrus and tropical fruits. This is a long, mineral, complex and enveloping wine.

Hess Chardonnay '07, Monterey, California
Lush tropical fruit flavors of pineapple and mango are complemented by a bright finish.

Taste these wines at the Wine Bar by the glass or by the bottle. Join us soon for the new tastes of summer!

Too Politically Sensitive
by local author Michale Callahan will be published on May 18, 2009. Guests will have a chance to meet the author, have their copy of the novel personalized and receive one complimentary glass of wine. If you do not have a copy of the book, don't worry copies will be available for purchase the day of the event.

About The Book
In a state as rich in political corruption as Illinois, it's more of a reality than a question. This true story starts with a murder in a small town and the wrongful conviction of two men, but quickly escalates into a conspiracy of deceit, hypocrisy, misconduct, and cover-up by one of the most corrupt states in the United States.

This true story is about his fight to search for the truth, no matter where it may lead, to search for the real killers and help free the two innocent men he learned were railroaded into prison. As the story unfolds it becomes his and every citizen's worst nightmare when any crime is deemed "too politically sensitive" instead of justice for the victims. Callahan's fight continued with his personal battle against a corrupt and powerful state that was more interested in covering up the scandal and silencing its employees than seeking justice. His battle led to the United States Supreme Court, where he continues to fight for his and every American's First Amendment protection, the freedom of speech.

HANGAR ONE
Spiced Pear Vodka

Very Limited!!!
This is a limited edition, seasonal bottling from one of our favorite vodka producers, Hangar One. The Bartlett pears for this vodka come from Colorado's high dessert, they are small and fragrant becoming even more so when they're macerated and distilled on a small copper still. The result is a vodka that's clean, with focused pear fruit aromas and a subtle pear flavor with a hint of clove spice. Try it chilled for a festive martini.
