February 18th - 24th

The date of Mardi Gras depends on the date of Easter. The celebration takes place at the end of a long carnival season beginning on the "Twelfth Night," and is celebrated in many Roman Catholic communities around the world-most notably in New Orleans and in Rio de Janeiro.

Mardi Gras is a French term meaning "Fat Tuesday." The term arose from the custom of parading a fat ox through the streets on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.

Revelers eat, drink, carouse and make merry during Mardi Gras, attempting to satiate the desires of the flesh prior to the abstinence observed during the Lenten season. Although Mardi Gras is a Christian tradition, its origins lie in the ancient Roman custom of merrymaking before a period of fasting.

For the final weekend of Mardi Gras, our Cafe will feature a changing selection of hearty Southern soups from Jambalaya to Gumbo.  We'll also be pouring Hurricanes, Swamp Ade and Sazeracs and offering beer selections from Dixie and Abita.  If your plans don't include a trip to New Orleans, join us starting this Friday through February 24th for a little touch of Mardi Gras!

Wine 101: An Introduction
SUNDAY SCHOOL
Sunday, March 1st
4:00 - 6:00pm
Our Price: $20/person

Do you read Wine for Dummies late at night off in a dark corner? Do you want to try Merlot, but you're afraid to ask? If so, this seminar is for you! Join us at Sun Singer as we de-mystify the world of wine. Wine 101 will introduce you to the everyday pleasures of wine.

We'll be covering basic wine varieties and their characteristics, along with how to taste and talk about wine. We'll cover some of the basic wine terminology and flavor components of wine. We'll also talk about 'when wine goes bad.' After this introduction you'll feel more comfortable with the 'language' of wine, ordering wine in a restaurant and how to explain what you want from a wine when choosing one in the store. With any luck you'll be on the road to a lifetime of enjoyment in a world of wine!

Dixie Lager

Dixie Lager is an American icon. Brewed all-naturally today as it was first brewed in 1907, Dixie Lager uses lightly roasted two-row barley malts and rice. The result is a crisp and flavorful beer with a mild Cascade hop finish.

At present, all of Dixie's brewing is being done under contract with Minhas Craft Brewing at the Huber Brewery in Monroe with Dixie's brewmaster, Kevin Stuart, overseeing production according to the historic recipes.

The Brunos plan to reopen the New Orleans brewery within two years.
