Red Ribbon Week Is Here!

This week October 17th-21st the students at Central are celebrating the national Red Ribbon Week. The Monday Morning Meeting will jumpstart the week where we highlight healthy eating, activity, and taking care of our bodies. The theme continues to be: Strong Body, Healthy Heart, Smart Choices.

As stated in the letter home, Red Ribbon Week is usually celebrated as a time to discuss drug use with students. It was decided a while ago that because of the young age of our children a theme of healthy and smart choices seems most appropriate. Your student went home with a few activities including two worksheets for your family should you choose to use them. They allow you and your child to log hours participating in physical activity or screen time. Also included is information on the Choose My Plate recommendations from the USDA as well as a healthy eating quiz and a coloring activity. None of these are required, simply provided for you as a jumping off point to discuss a healthy lifestyle with your student, if needed.

Wednesday is our biggest day with a healthy snack of apples, possibly an apple token and an assembly. The assembly, performed by Soul Shoppe, will address bullying in a non-confrontational way where the students are incorporated actively into the assembly and make it their own. If you walk to school on Wednesday your child will receive an apple token for their Walking Track bracelet as well as another one if they walk the Walking Track on Thursday. The week wraps up on Friday with a request to wear red to show your school spirit and show a commitment to a healthy lifestyle. We hope you enjoy the worksheets and activities with your child.

If you have any questions or would like more information please let us know. We are happy to help.

Central School's 4th and 5th graders

take second place at LEAP's 28th annual competition!

  sand dolphin

At LEAP's 28th annual sandcastle competition, at Ocean Beach, SF, Central School's 4th/5th graders, Stantec & DPR won 2nd place Saturday, October 8, 2011 as the Blue Angels flew overhead.  Their theme was cannon ball bowling: a shark, an octopus, a seal & a dolphin- Central's mascot!

Central won 2nd place for best participation of students with their architectural & construction team, #12.

They worked on their sand sculpture masterpiece from 10:00am to 2:00 in the afternoon.  After the morning fog revealed sunshine & bright blue skies, the Blue Angels emerged & created quite an amazing sight: loops & pyramid formations, as if to celebrate the thousand plus kids, who showed their school spirit & exemplified citizenship.  We are so proud of you!

Volunteer Information Meeting
Monday October 24, 7 p.m.

There will be a meeting for those interested in volunteering for School-Force on Monday October 24 at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Use Room.  From 7-8pm I'll give an overview of what opportunities exist, and from 8-9pm we'll hold a kickoff meeting for School-Force Room Reps.  It's fun to be on a winning team!  Join other School-Force volunteers and help continue our winning streak!  The School-Force Team has had great success over the last few years helping Belmont-Redwood Shores schools overcome some drastic state budget cuts.  We need your help to continue this excellent record.  Visit  http://schoolforce.org/volunteer/ to take a look at some of the opportunities to get involved.
It's a team effort!

Enough About You

Let's talk about ME.  Ha, attempt at a joke.  Seriously, I'm the new School-Force! liaison for Central.  We'll provide updates throughout the year on what is new with The Belmont-Redwood Shores Public School Foundation and can also answer any questions you may have about it.  My husband Eric and I have a daughter, Alana, a Kindergartener in Ms. Spadia's class, and if you've met her she's probably already told you more than you really wanted to know about our dog, Rosie.  The three (four?) of us are excited to be part of such a great community.  As Liaison I hope to do what I can to give back during this challenging time for our district and also learn as much as I can about how foundations operate. I look forward to working with you to keep our schools great.

- Michele Moyer, Central School-Force Liaison
