Monday Morning Meeting

Principal, Cori McKenzie

Cori

Dear Parents,

At Central School, each week begins with an outdoor assembly called Monday Morning Meeting. Students in grades 1-5 meet in a semi-circle on the blacktop as soon as the 8:25AM bell rings. The meeting begins with the flag Color Guard Ceremony led by either our Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. The scouts then lead the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. At MMM we look for ways to honor the "whole" child, as recognizing the achievement of both academic standards and character development are important.

Each Monday all birthdays for the coming week are celebrated, achievements are honored, the week's coming events are announced, and one of the "Magic" words (e.g. Please, Thank You, May I, Excuse Me, and You're Welcome) is introduced. A new courtesy word is introduced each week. These words are posted in every classroom and around the school to remind all of us of the importance of courtesy. In addition to the Magic Words, our Culture of Courtesy stresses a different character trait each month such as friendliness, generosity, thoughtfulness, and treating others with respect. We celebrate examples of positive behavior monthly at our "Caught Being Good" assemblies in addition to Monday Morning Meetings.

The Magic Words we are focusing on are, "You're Welcome." The character trait introduced for the month of October is, "Kindness."

We hope you will join us in reinforcing the Magic words at home and reminding your child about the importance of being kind to others.

Art-In-Action

Art in Action is a sequential, discipline based visual art program that teaches art appreciation, art history, and art skills.  The program is aligned with National and California Visual Arts Education Standards.

Central's commitment to Art in Action runs deep and we are proud to be in our 8th year at the school.  We have over 40 volunteer docents & helpers, teachers who provide us with their precious time in their classrooms, and PTA funding that make this quality art program a reality.

As we kick off Art in Action this school year, Mrs. Hanau's 5th Grade classroom has recently analyzed Winslow Homer's Snap the Whip (1872).  His painting tells us about American life in the 1800s.  These modern-day students had a hard time believing that a "one room school house" ever existed.  After our art history lesson, the students then colored realistic apples (in four different panels from whole to core), blending oil pastel and showing highlights, shadows, and cast shadows.  To top off this fun project, they even got to sample the apples which was a nice treat on this cool, drizzly fall day!

For any questions about Art-In-Action or if you would like to volunteer, please contact Kristy Snow.

Central Library News

It felt like a bee hive in the library this week! We have 18 classes coming in every other week when it's Library Week at Central. Snack recess and lunch time brings in the kids to play games, make original artwork, play with puppets and even READ!

Thank you to my volunteers who have helped get our library up and running and for the extra help covering lunch time duty:

Allison Lowenstein, Khajh Zafarullah, Jill Pratt, Scott Brylow, Michelle Garcia, Jenny Tang, Paromita Kundu and Leslie Marks are our library volunteers this year. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Since opening in September all classes have gone over library etiquette, celebrated authors Shel Silverstein, Tomie DaPaola, David Shannon, Daniel San Souci and H. A. Rey and had book talks to the upper grades. This week our kindergarteners learned the importance of using shelf markers when finding their books. Our new library cards came in and so far they've all worked perfectly! What a time saving  they are. They make Mrs. Branscum very happy!

The next Library Week will be October 17-21.

Mrs. Branscum
