A Message from our Principal
Principal, Cori McKenzie
Dear Parents,
It was terrific to see such an outstanding turnout for Back to School Night. The evening had a great vibe with so many parents participating. We look forward to working as partners with you throughout the school year.
Now that we are settled in, I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of our staff for the almost seamless beginning of school. Our custodians, Steve Keegan and Daniel Alvarez, worked tirelessly throughout the summer, stripping floors, emptying classrooms and thoroughly cleaning the whole school. I would like to thank Kathie McNulty, our wonderful secretary, who maintains the office in tiptop shape and is the first smiling face to greet you each day. Patty Branscum, our library tech, keeps the library a busy, cheerful and well loved part of Central. The heart of the school, however, is our teaching staff and their support staff. The teachers' love of teaching and their devotion to their kids is a daily inspiration. It is also the key to Central's excellent reputation.
With school well under way, our fifth grade students have taken on their leadership roles as office helpers, flag duty monitors, and Kiddie Valet. As you drop off your children in the morning, look for our Kiddie Valet students helping adults to greet incoming children. They will assist students from their cars, and wish parents a good day as they depart. It is a great way for everyone to start the morning.
By now, parents with students in grades 3-5 should have received your student's scores from 2010-11 STAR testing. We have much to celebrate! The school test results published as the API scores demonstrate that we continue to work hard toward improvement each year and can be rightfully proud. The API (Academic Performance Index) is an index score between
200-1000 that reflects a school's performance on STAR, the annual statewide assessment. Schools with an API of 800 or more are meeting the state's proficiency standards.
Central's API this year was 939, up five points from last year's API of 934! Congratulations, Dolphins!!
It is wonderful to have everyone back with school now in full swing. I am so happy to be a part of this extraordinary school and look forward to an excellent year ahead!
Warmest regards,
Cori McKenzie

Central PTA "Uncorked" Auction, Dinner & Dance
Saturday, November 12
6:00PM-11:00PM
Domenico Winery
1697 Industrial Road, San Carlos
Grete Fry and Pam Bell are Co-Chairs of the event. We are currently looking for donations and urging classes to think creatively of group offerings that would be fun and lucrative.
Volunteers Needed:
We also need a volunteer who enjoys writing/editing and manipulating documents to help put the auction catalogue together. We have the format, the content (mostly) and the printer and we just need help with the job of importing, writing, editing and proofreading. It is the kind of job that can be done in the evening after kids are in bed.
Please contact Grete Fry if you can help.

Central Library News
Central Library Book Nook Needs your Help Starting the Week of October 10-14!
The Book Nook was created last year when the library was still closed. It is a quiet place in the library with dedicated "Book Nook books" where kids can go during lunchtime to read a book. When the library opened last year every other week, we had the Book Nook open during alternate weeks during lunchtime. We would like to continue having it open every other week this year when the library is closed (since the library is still only open every other week), but we need help staffing it.
It only requires a parent to be there every other week at the Book Nook from 12-1pm one day of the week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday). We want to open it the week of October 10th. With conferences and holidays, it works out that between now and the end of the year the weeks we need help are: October 10-14, October 24-28, November 7-11, December 5-9. If we can't find help, we will not be able to have the Book Nook open this year.
Please email Bettina at: bettinaoelke@yahoo.com if you can help, and which day of the week you prefer.
The kids who enjoy the Book Nook thank you!
