October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Pink RibbonIt is estimated that for 2010 in the USA, there will be 207,090  new cases of breast cancer for women and 1,970 new cases for men. Day-to-day lifestyle choices involving factors such as diet, physical activity, alcohol and smoking can possibly affect breast cancer risk. This week's newsletter aims to increase your awareness of breast cancer and your health.

Best,
Michelle

Lifestyle Decisions and Breast Cancer

There are many risk factors for breast cancer (including age, sex, medical and reproductive history, and genetic alterations) over which we have limited control. However, common to all are daily lifestyle decisions that may affect breast cancer risk. Consider these lifestyle improvements for a healthier life.

Survivors

  • Decrease your daily fat intake - especially saturated or hydrogenated fats. Eat leaner meats and limit red meat.
  • Increase fiber in your diet. Fiber is found in whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition to their fiber content, fruits and vegetables have antioxidant properties and micronutrients that may help prevent some cancers.
  • Limit alcohol. Evidence suggests that a small increase in risk exists for women who average two or more drinks per day (beer, wine, and distilled liquor).
  • Stay active. Engage in a moderate amount of physical activity (such as taking a brisk, 30-minute walk) on most days of the week.
  • Don't smoke. Although smoking doesn't cause breast cancer, it can increase the chance of blood clots, heart disease, and other cancers that may spread to the breast.

Another Reason to Sleep

Sleepy boyA small, recent study highlights the importance of adequate sleep on a healthy lifestyle and healthy weight. Researchers studied 10 overweight sedentary volunteers in a sleep laboratory for two 2-week periods: one period was restricted to 5.5 bedtime hours per night and the other to 8.5 hours per night. Subjects lost significantly more lean-mass weight and less body fat when sleeping 5.5 hours a night than when sleeping 8.5 hours. In addition, less sleep led to higher circulating levels of a hormone which increases the sense of hunger.
