Why Eat Fruit and Vegetables?
1. Color & Texture. Fruits and veggies add color, texture and appeal to your plate. Choose a variety of colors to get all the nutrients you need, such as brilliant red tomatoes, deep purple eggplant, sunshine yellow bananas, or fresh green kiwi!
2. Convenience. Fruits and veggies are nutritious whether fresh, frozen, canned, dried or bottled as 100% juice. Dried apricots, frozen beans, canned Clementines or baby carrots are all delicious and convenient.
3. Fiber. Fruits and veggies provide fiber that keeps the digestive system healthy. Fruits and veggies high in fiber include apples, blackberries, pears, raspberries and beans.
4. Low in Calories. Fruits and veggies are naturally low in calories. 100 calorie snacks include 4 cups of cherry tomatoes, 2 cups of baby carrots, strawberries or apple slices, or 7 cups of cucumber. Alternatively you could enjoy a ¼ bagel, a 1 ounce mini muffin or a 4 inch chocolate cookie. 5. May Reduce Disease Risk. Studies now show that eating plenty of fruits and veggies may help reduce the risk of many diseases including heart disease, high blood pressure, and some cancers.
6. Vitamins & Minerals. Fruits and veggies are rich in vitamins and minerals. For example iron (high in lentils and spinach) is important for healthy blood. For more information on vitamins and minerals click here
7. Fruits & Veggies are Nutritious AND Delicious! A slice of cool watermelon on a hot summer's day, a frozen raspberry smoothie for an afternoon pick me up, warm apple crisp made with apples that you picked yourself in RI, oven-roasted vegetables to join the turkey at Thanksgiving...the list goes on and on! |
