Hi there!
I find myself traveling in beautiful North Carolina today... With a couple of my best girl-friends.  Life is indeed....sweet!

Co-existence
I have quite a few of these non-representational paintings at different levels of completion. The hardest part is knowing when to quit. I think that's why they linger in the studio...

While painting representationally, when it looks like the scene, or flower, or person...you stop!

It's not so clear cut with abstract work. Some of the things I ask myself are:
  • Did I get my idea across?
  • Do I like the composition?
  • Do the colors and value pattern make sense and help tell the story?
  • Does it feel finished?
I rely a lot on feel with this stuff...that's why it's so scary! My own challenge is stopping sooner rather than later... You really have to trust yourself...
It's your story to tell.

Travel Journals...

Whenever I take a trip, I pack my travel sketchbook even before my undies and toothbrush. For me...this is the most important thing that I pack.

Flipping back through old travel journals is just a wonderful way to take me right back to the spot that I recorded on the pages. I take a mini digital camera with me too... but it's the journals and sketches that really trigger the memories of a place.

Supplies:
  • Any sort of small journal...lined or unlined. This is for your eyes only, there is no need to share your journals if you don't want to.
  • Any sort of writing instrument...pencil, (mechanical is nice so you don't need a sharpener) ball point pen or marker. What ever you love to write or draw with.
  • A mini watercolor plein air set...but this isn't a need.
  • The will to actually write and draw in the journal each day of your trip...trust me...you'll be glad you did.

What sort of things do I include in my journal?

  • Sights and sounds along with the sketch...these words help trigger the memories later.
  • Funny things that happen.
  • Frustrations of travel.
  • Quick sketches of odd things that strike me as unique to a place...You'll know 'em when you see 'em.
  • Restaurants and food we eat.
  • Odd people that we meet.
  • Anything that gets my attention!

Here's a link to a book by David Rankin that teaches "Fast Sketching Techniques." (which is a fabulous skill to learn)

Happy Traveling!
