Curator's Picks |
| EditionedArt Curator, Irene Huh, took a poll of our best flag carrying artists. View her picks below.
Alex Guofeng Cao is a photographer, born in China but raised in the States and now living and working in New York. He is inspired by such masters as Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Edward Weston, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Working in black and white image, Cao expresses a deep fascination for subtle gradations of tone between the deep black and the stark white which balances each other quiet well. The most recent body of work by Cao is a series of images of popular culture icons.

Lamar Peterson Nothin' But Blue Skies Color Lithograph and screen print in fabric-covered case $4,500
Lamar Peterson's candy colored works are both seductive and subversive. Humor wrought and politically poignant, Peterson addresses contemporary political issues in his extensive and important body of work. Always on the brink of the new, his message is apparent and his style is unique.

Michael Ray Charles Black Cats Go Off Intaglio line etching and aquatint, lithography, linocut, hand-coloring, pouchoir, and embossment $6,000
Austin-based artist Michael Ray Charles is one of America's most astute artistic interpreters of racial stereotypes as they have been manifested in U.S. history. His ironic confrontations of racism, such as his reversal of "white power" challenge viewers to reexamine their socio-political views. He is a pop-culturalist whose extensive body of work was influenced by this background in advertising. He unique approach employs a certain visual prowess to communicate messages about race and identity. His prints reflect the current time we are living and raised awareness about race politics influence on popular culture. This print is an important example of the intersection between art and media.
"I don't think that [advertisers] had this notion that they wanted to, you know, alter what blackness meant forever in American culture. That gives them too much credit. It makes them godlike, in a sense." - Michael Ray Charles
