Aloha, friends!

No, this is not one of the photos taken from my kitchen window in Canada!

Last month, I traveled to Hawai'i with my husband David. The beauty of the island was mirrored in the hospitality and warmth we received from the Marianist family. I also traveled to Dayton, Ohio to attend a retreat with the State and Miryam communities. It was a blessing to visit with all these communities; some relatively new and some with a deep and long history.

I remain united in prayer and thanksgiving for our global family!

Peace,

President's Message

Dear Friends,

I want to ask your prayers for the upcoming meeting of the International Team of Marianist Lay communities as we meet in Rome, Italy from November 3-8.

One of the important topics that we will be discussing and planning is the upcoming 5th International Meeting of Marianist Lay Communities, planned for August 2-9, 2009 in Nairobi, Africa.  The topic for this meeting will be "Marianist Lay Communities in the Church and in the World".  We are excited about planning for this meeting and inviting delegates from the 28 countries where MLC's exist.

We are a global reality, united in serving Mary's mission of spreading the message of her son, Jesus.  United in Mary as our Mother and apostolic model of action may all of us be inspired to be people of the Spirit.  Please keep the international team in your prayers as we plan for the upcoming international meeting.

HawaiiRetreat

Members of Marianist Lay Communities in Hawai'i gathered at Ewa Beach on September 27th for their annual day of meetings and reflection.

HawaiiRetreat2

Colorful strands of yarn passed around the room to show the intertwining of connections in the Marianist Family on the local, national, continental, and international levels. This was followed by the singing of "Weave One Heart from the Many Strands".

MackeyLecture

On September 28, Isabella Moyer, Carol Ramey, and Bro. Jack Ventura, SM presented the Mackey Lecture on "The Marian Dimension of Church".

The Mackey Marianist Lectures are named after the late Fr. Robert Mackey, S.M., one of the founders and the first president of Chaminade University. Fr. Mackey dedicated his life to using his Christian and Marianist principles to making the world a better place for all -- especially for the poor and the marginalized.

A special thank you to Bro. Dennis Schmitz, SM, our host. And also to Chaminade University, the Marianist Center of Hawai'i and St. Louis School, the sponsors of the Mackey Lectures.

World Day of Prayer Celebrations

Marianist communities around the world united in prayer and spiritual communion at the shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil for the 2008 Marianist World Day of Prayer.

In Nairobi, Marianists spent the day praying for countries that have experienced war and civil unrest. Five countries specifically named included Somalia, Sudan, Congo, Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire.

The gathering in Winnipeg, Canada had a Portuguese flavor provided by songs and prayers from the Circulo de Boa Nova MLC.

It's always grand to connect with family on our travels. When Sue Buckley (MLC National Responsible, Ireland) took her family for a visit to Paris, they stopped by to visit the Gorgette clan. Sue and Mary are both members of the cyber-MLC, Our Lady of the Round Table.

The next International Meeting of Marianist Lay Communities will be held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2009.  Approximately 50 delegates from 29 countries will be invited to attend.

Because of rising fuel costs, travel to the meeting will be expensive.  Also, over half of our delegates reside in developing nations .

We are setting up a Scholarship Fund for Delegates to help with travel and meeting costs. Please consider donating to this fund.

Make checks to:  Marianist Lay Network and in the annotation line write "International Meeting Fund" and mail to:

Are you a frequent traveller and would like to donate airmiles for delegate travel? Please contact NACMS intern, Ben Dougherty at [email protected].
