ExpandingExpanding Horizons for Student Success...the Afterschool Way
Sign up today for this information packed conference on September 24, 2010 at LaVista Embassy Suites. Participants will gain ready to use information and insights to grow and sustain high quality school based and school linked out-of-school time programs. Register by September 10th with payment of $45/person for all conference materials, luncheon and refreshments due on the 20th.

Presentations will focus on three core components of quality out of school time programs: 1) improving student learning in core academic areas, 2) providing social benefits and supporting positive behavioral changes and 3) increasing family and community engagement to support students' success in school and in life.

Presenters include Tracey Ballas (Executive Officer of School-Age Notes), Clay Roberts (co-author of Building Developmental Assets in School Communities), Heather Weiss (Founder and Director of Harvard Family Research Project), Danette Parsley (Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning [McREL]), plus 21 promising practice breakout sessions led by Nebraska out of school time professionals.

This conference is sponsored by the 21st Century Community Learning Center Program at the Nebraska Department of Education in partnership with the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties, Nebraska Community Learning Center Network, Nebraska Parental Information and Resource Center (PIRC), and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension 4-H Youth Development.

TurnTurn the Lights On in Nebraska!
The national Afterschool Alliance has been turning the spotlight on afterschool programs for over ten years. Join thousands across the country on October 21, 2010 in celebrating Lights On Afterschool, an annual event that calls attention to the vital role that high quality afterschool programs play for America's children, families and communities.

This year we would like to see more Nebraska communities participate. We strongly encourage program advocates to hold Lights On Afterschool events to raise the profile of your initiative. Visit www.AfterschoolAlliance.org/loaEventKit.cfm to register your event and gain access to a comprehensive guide, full of ready to use materials, to help you plan, organize, implement and promote your own event.

At the state level, the Nebraska Community Learning Center Network will host a workshop at the Expanding Horizon conference (see above) describing how you can use a Lights On event to build community support for sustainable afterschool programs. The Network will also prepare a proclamation for Governor Heineman to sign identifying October 21st as Lights On Afterschool Day in Nebraska.
