From the President's Desk...
Dear Friend of Freedom,

A lot of good folks in the grass roots conservative movement seem to think that if they support the right candidates or political groups then those people will lead the charge towards responsible government and individual freedom.  So, according this reasoning, we'll have an election on Tuesday and then all will be right with the world.
Well, probably not.  Politicians tend to follow trends more than set them.  That's not so much a reflection on them as on the incentives of a system that rewards giving away other people's money and punishes taking a principled stand or being an innovator.  We need to change those incentives and make sure those who represent us are constantly aware of which way the wind is blowing; and get them back on course when they drift.
Sweeping in candidates who recognize the limits of government intervention, respect our freedoms, and demand government accountability is a necessary but insufficient condition for success in turning around our ship of state.  The more difficult part will be holding those we elect accountable and keeping the fire lit until 2012
MPI's going to help keep the fire lit by providing practical  information, education, and training for motivated Montanans who want to stay informed on the issues and learn how to make a difference.  But that's not enough.  The passion will quickly fizzle and this movement will be just a footnote in history if we allow those we elect to be co-opted by the system and carry on business as usual in Helena and Washington.
So we'll be talking with (and watching) them, too.  Our citizen legislators need hard data and practical solutions to tackle the serious problems Montana is facing.  If they go back to the old ways of taxing and spending it won't be for lack of better ideas.  And I don't think most of them want to.  They're just not being provided alternatives.
The kickoff for this process is our Legislative Forum on November 16th in Helena.  We'll have national, state, and local experts talking to our new (and experienced) legislators about cutting government waste, reforming our broken budget system, respecting property rights, and getting our kids the best education for the dollar.  Former representative Duncan Hunter will also provide the lunch keynote with an informative talk about current national security issues.  This landmark event will have people talking all year, and you're invited!  The morning and lunch sessions will be open to the registered public.  We hope you can make it.

In Freedom,
Carl Graham
Major Project Updates

-  Legislative Forum: Find out what will be hot in Helena during the 2011 session at our second biennial Legislators' Forum on November 16th.  We've got national, state, and local experts on health care, spending and budget reform, tax reform, property rights and education reform. Former Rep. Duncan Hunter will be the lunch keynote.  We'll also roll out our own studies on state spending, performance-based budgeting, and and our very first Pork Report showing where to cut the budget without harming legitimate state government functions.  All the information you need is here.

- Tweet Montana:  Check out our new site!  It automatically follows the Twitter feeds of every elected official (and candidates during campaign season) in the state...well, at least those who Tweet. If you're a political junkie or just want to keep track of what they're saying, this is your one-stop website for all of them.

  - Montana WatchdogInsurance mandates, six figure pensions, workers comp, paid time off payoffs, grass roots profiles, and a whole lot more you won't get from legacy media outlets. Get the latest news beyond the newspaper from our two-full time  investigative reporters.  You can also get more perspective and analysis from the blog and Twitter feeds.   Follow us on Twitter

 - Health Care Reform: We're continuing to update our health care reform resource page with analyses of the bill and news about initiatives across the country to oppose it.  This bill must be repealed and replaced before it begins to create a new dependent class starting in 2014!  There are parts to keep and better reforms to put in place, but this one has to go.

- Global Warming Resources Page: We're continuing to follow the global warming and cap-and-tax debate and share our findings with you on this links page.  It's your one-stop shopping spot for all you need to know to be the informed skeptic on your block.
Grow with MPI
We're on the hunt for a new Operations Manager for our Bozeman office.  This person will need some experience running an office, solid organizational skills, and a firm commitment to MPI's mission.  We're doing a national search, but we know there's someone in Montana who would be perfect for this job.  Is it you?
