NCA e-notes   Monthly Electronic Newsletter of the Newfoundland Club of America
October 2008

halloween-chuckieIt's October and fall is in full swing, and many Newf fanciers look forward to Draft Tests, Pumpkin Pulls, and Halloween costume contests. Here we see Judi Randall's Chuckie dressed as the Tin Man. Remember that community events are always a good time for us to be ambassadors for the breed and provide us with opportunities to educate the public about our Newfoundlands.  If you are looking for resources to share for public education, you can download a number of informative brochures from the NCA website.

As always, we want to hear from you. Email us at any time with your comments and suggestions.

DNA Samples Urgently Needed!
dna draw The Cranial Cruciate Ligament Study (CCLR) which is being conducted at the University of Minnesota and funded through the Newfoundland Health Challenge is in need of DNA.  DNA from any Newfoundland who has experienced a torn cruciate ligament or any member of his/her immediate family, sire dam, siblings,  the DNA is needed.  Please visit the CHIC website for the directions on how to submit your Newf's DNA to the CHIC DNA repository. And the good news is that there is a rebate program to subsidize the submission of DNA to the CHIC DNA repository.  Each DNA submission is eligible for a $20.00 rebate. Please order your kit, have the blood drawn and ship it tomorrow.  This study could provide the key for those Newfs who are predisposed to a CCLR, please invest in the future of the our breed and donate the needed DNA. At it's October Teleconference, the NCA Board of Directors appointed Susan Wagner and Christopher Plum to the Steering Committee and Brian Hodges was appointed as chair of the Working Achievement Award Committee. Would you like to get involved and help the NCA?  Contact Committee liaison Kathy McIver and discuss where your skills could best be used to help our breed.
And so,

The NCA Board remains busy with our upcoming Face-to-Face Meeting the first weekend in November. We would like to take a moment to mention that the circulation of the NCA e-Notes has grown from one thousand to over fifteen hundred readers every month. If you are a new subscriber and would like to catch up on any issues that you have missed, be sure to check out the newsletter archive online. While the Board is committed to working for our breed, ask yourself what YOU can do to help as well, whether you work with the NCA on a national level, with a Regional Club or a local training or all-breed club, there are many ways to get involved. Your Newfs will thank you!
