NCA e-notes   Monthly Electronic Newsletter of the Newfoundland Club of America
March 2008
Greetings!

At its February teleconference, the NCA Board voted to establish a network of Newfoundland Breed stewards, including participating regional clubs and individuals, who can be contacted by people in their geographic area who want to learn more about Newfoundlands. The goal of the program is to put these people in direct touch with knowledgable Newfoundland owners who live near them who can meet with them, introduce them to their dogs, discuss the breed, invite them to events, and provide some close one-on-one contact.

If the individual inquiring about Newfoundlands lives in an area covered by one of the participating regional clubs, the lead will be passed to that club for followup.  Otherwise, the request will be answered by one of the NCA Breed Stewards in that area.

The details of the program are now being worked out, and a committee is being established to manage the network of NCA Stewards (participating regional clubs and individuals), provide them with appropriate handouts, monitor their activity, and make suggestions for improvements in the program.  This Board-appointed committee will include, but not be limited to, a representative from the Breeder Referral, Breeders List, General Education, and REACt committees.

This committee, along with all others, will be appointed by the new Board at the National in Rhode Island.  If you have an interest in serving on this committee (or any other committee as well), please contact Mary Lou Roberts, NCA Committee Liaison.

DNA Collection Vital to Future Health Research
Newf DNAThe DNA Collection Clinic at the National Specialty is a great opportunity to assist health research now, and for the future health of our beloved breed. It is especially important to get the DNA of our veterans in the bank. A  lot of them will be on site at The National Tuesday, April 29th with Veteran Sweeps scheduled for Wednesday. Please, if you and your dog/s are going to be on site Tuesday, April 29th, bank your dog(s)' blood. The more Newfoundland samples, especially families, available in the bank, the more researchers will be interested in the health problems in our breed.

lighthouse
The deadline for submission of Regional Club columns for NewfTide is April 1. The purpose of the club columns is to promote communication of interesting projects and activities across the country. Content is limited to information of interest to the general NCA membership. Articles should be a source of ideas to other clubs. Suggested topics about a club's activities are a special speaker, a panel discussion, a fun event or unique party, fund raising, and workshops.

Greetings!

This time of year brings a lot of activity to the NCA. Committee appointments are made at the Board face-to-face meeting at the National Specialty. If you would like to help the NCA in any capacity, take a look at the Committee Directory, and contact Mary Lou Roberts, committee liaison, with your area of interest.

Also, keep in mind two important deadlines that are quickly approaching: the Submission forms for the Annual of Titlists are due March 31; and the deadline for Breeders List Applications is is now May 10 (extended by the NCA Board at its March teleconference).

In the past year the NCA has approved two new designations/awards, the Working Achievement Award and the Health Testing Designation. Both of these recognitions require an application, they are not automatically distributed, so read the requirements and submit your application today.

I look forward to seeing many old faces at the upcoming National Specialty in Rhode Island, and to meeting many new friends as well. Remember that the NCA Board will be meeting in open session on Monday, April 28, and any NCA member is welcome to attend. And don't forget to attend the Welcome Reception and Annual Meeting on Tuesday evening.

Sincerely,
 rogersig
