The Voyage of the Dawn TreaderThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Better the Second (and Third) Time

"The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him." Proverbs 18:17 (NIV)

In my "first impressions" review of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, I expressed regret that I knew to much about the film before I saw the pre-screening. These past three weeks have been one of turmoil inside myself as I debated how well I liked the movie.

For those who are fans of the books, "our first love will always have to be" the books. So it's important to realize that it would be impossible to incorporate everything from the books into the movie. Even the Focus on the Family Radio Theatre version (whose creators were dedicated to making the series "the most faithful rendition" ever) made changes adapting the books.

So, when I went to see the movie again (both in 2-D and 3-D) this weekend, I was determined, as I had told Dr. Brown, to "to sit back and relax and enjoy what's there instead of trying to pick out what's not." What a difference. The second and third looks have me hooked.  I am enthralled.

I hope the reports of people fainting in the theaters don't keep viewers away from this movie. If you're worried, do what I did and read the book first, so you'll know exactly what to expect.

TangledTangled

The Last Princess Film from Disney?
David Bruce

Since the beginning of the new century, "princess films" have not done well... with the public.  But with the critics?  Heck, they're raving about Tangled, with an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.  And for my money, The Princess and the Frog was one of the most underappreciated films from last year.
Featured Interview: Walden Media's Micheal Flaherty
The Voyage of the Dawn TreaderChallenges, and Phony Challenges

I had a chance to talk briefly on the phone with Micheal Flaherty, one of the founders of Walden Media, the production company behind The Chronicles of Narnia films as well as several other films.

Let me start by asking about your own relationship to the Narnia books and how that has affected Walden's part in the films?

I remember my brother Chip bought the books at the Burlington Mall-our office is actually in back of the place he first bought the books-and he read them to me. So I grew up loving them, then later on in life Lewis's other books, particularly Mere Christianity and [The] Screwtape [Letters] had a really profound effect on me, so I've been a big Lewis lover...
