Dear Friends,

As we begin the new year I want to remind you of all the wonderful opportunities that are right here at All Saints' to serve our neighbors in need.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome on Tuesday nights to distribute food, serve meals, clean up and visit with our neighbors.   Additionally we are looking for volunteers to join a cooking team. If you are unavailable on Tuesday night, don't let that stop you.  Some of our cooking teams do food preparation on weekends or Tuesday during the day.  We also need volunteers to come in any time during the week or on weekends to organize our food donations in the pantry area.  Please contact our volunteer coordinator Liz Embler (liz@ravenswoodcommunityservices.org) if you are interested.

On Saturday, January 8 we will hold our Market Pantry at the Ravenswood School parking lot (4332 N. Paulina). Volunteers are needed from 8:30-11:00 a.m. to help set up and hand our groceries to families.  Market Pantry happens on the second Saturday of each month. This is another wonderful opportunity for volunteers of all ages.  Children are welcome.

Bonnie Perry is away and will return to the office on Tuesday January 4th.  Please don't hesitate to call the office (773-561-0111) or my cell phone if you have a pastoral concern (312-401-2058).  Beau is also in the office to assist you.

May God's Blessing be upon each of you this New Year and, together, may we continue to be the presence of Christ in our world.

Blessings,

Rev. Fran

PRAY AND ACT
for the People of Sudan

Mark your calendars for the Vigil for the People of Sudan on Saturday, January 8th at 8:00pm.

Join us for a Vigil Service at 8:00pm, or to keep vigil in the church for one hour during the night between 9:00pm and 7:00am. Email Jack at jack@allsaintschicago.org or check out the signup in the back of the church if you'd like to sign up for an hour or more.

On January 9th, the people of Southern Sudan will vote on whether or not to form a separate nation. This vote was a condition of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, yet the government in the North is mobilizing its forces in anticipation of a vote for separation, and some violence has already broken out. The Diocese of Renk (the Diocese of Chicago's companion Diocese) falls right on the border.

Click here to read a report that Joseph Garang Atem, Bishop of Renk Diocese in Sudan, shared with us.  This was from his meeting at the Special Envoy's Office of the State Department in Washington, D.C., giving an update on the troubled state of affairs in Renk Diocese which is on the border with Northern Sudan. This report adds even more urgency to the call for advocacy and heightened prayer for Sudan.  More information and resources about Sudan are at the back of the church, by the blue votive candles.

Volunteer Opportunity: Reality Fair 2011 Needs You!!
Reality Fair Launch Gathering and Fickle Finger of Fate:
Join the Reality Fair Team at 7:30 pm on Thursday, January 6th at the Rail at 4709 N Damen as we officially launch the 2011 Reality Fair. (Please note the change in location; we were in competition with a trivia contest at Bad Dog).   Meet fellow volunteers and, over drinks and snacks, help decide what destiny awaits our students at the Fickle Finger of Fate stations: a sudden windfall from Aunt Bertie?  You're booted due to too many parking tickets?  Who knows?

Reality Fair Classic:
On January 14th, 7th and 8th graders from Ravenswood School come prepared with a job and a monthly pay check. They try to meet their monthly financial obligations without going bankrupt. Finding out how many children you have, who your spouse is (pilot or deadbeat?), and suffering a couple  of "fickle fingers" of fate make the experience all the more exciting. We need volunteers to staff the different stations (bank, childcare, etc.) at the fair.

Time Commitment: 8:30am-noon on Friday, January 14th.

Premium Hounds:
To contribute to the festive aura of the Reality Fair, we need premiums and giveaways for the different stations. If you or your company has little promo items which would fit the theme of the Reality Fair, let us know. Be creative. In the past we've had Payday candy bars for the banking station, shampoos at the Personal Care table, pen lights at the Utility station, etc. This is a chance to be creative. We also need someone with an auto dealer connection who can get glossy pictures of our high end auto for the Transportation table (last year's was an Escalade).

If you would like to help, or need more information, contact:

Can you provide a meal or a ride to a fellow All Saintser?
Rides to Church- Nancy Brewer
Longtime parishioner Nancy Brewer is in need to a ride to and from church on Sunday mornings. She can go to either the 9 or 11am service.

If you are able to provide assistance, simply send an email to Beau in the Parish Office (beau@allsaintschicago.org) and he'll send you the login info for the Care Calendar so you can sign up to help.

Meals, etc.- the Nelson/Youngberg family
As you'll see in the blessings section of the prayer list, Laura Youngberg, Chris Nelson and their son William have a new addition to their family, Anton Charles.

Thanks to parishioner Michelle Mayes, we have a Care Calendar set up for them so friends, family and church members can help provide a meal or other assistance now that baby Anton has arrived.

If you are able to provide assistance, simply send an email to Beau in the Parish Office (beau@allsaintschicago.org) and he'll send you the login info for the Care Calendar so you can sign up to help.

Prayers for Peace, Taizé Service and Dinner in Oak Park
January 1, 2011
January 1 is the world day of prayer for peace. A Taizé service at Ascension Church (808 East Avenue, at Van Buren) in Oak Park takes place on January 1, at 7:30 pm, and on the first day of the new year this musical and meditative service is focused on prayers for peace. A group from All Saints' is planning to attend the service and eat dinner beforehand at 5:30pm at Maya del Sol (144 S. Oak Park Ave.), an amazing Nuevo Latino restaurant in Oak Park.

For more information or to discuss ride-sharing, talk to Margaret McCamant (margaret@allsaintschicago.org) or Beau Surratt (beau@allsaintschicago.org)
ADULT FAITH EXPLORATIONS at All Saints'
Want to find PEACE and CALM 2011?

An opportunity for generosity...
Have you made your pledge to All Saints' for 2011?
Click here to make your 2011 pledge to All Saints'

stewardship2010_childrenEvery day of every week the doors of our church, All Saints' Episcopal Church, are open. They are open to countless people for worship, for outreach, for our community, for all of us. We come through the doors for different reasons. Some of us have found special meaning and relevance in our services, some of us want our children to be a part of a living and growing church school, and some of us have found our connection to social outreach.

We count on you to continue to grow in grace, spirituality, and community involvement. All of the above numbers start with one. One person making a pledge of his/her time and money. Read more...

End-of-year giving

Dear Friends,

As we near the end of our year, with much to celebrate, we find ourselves $48,000 behind in our income. Thank you to all who have given so generously this year.  If you have not paid your entire pledge--please, please do so in the next two weeks. If you are unable to pay your pledge, please, just let me know. And, if you find yourself blessed by life and moved by the ministry of this community, I invite you to make an additional end-of-year gift to support our good work of feeding hungry people, teaching our children and creating a dynamic community of faith.  At All Saints', because of your gracious and generous support, we change lives. How cool is that?

Blessings,
Bonnie
Baptisms at All Saints'
baptism_fall2010The next opportunity for Baptisms is on The Feast of the Epiphany, Sunday January 9, 2011.  There is an opportunity for four persons to be baptized at the 9:00 a.m. service and four persons to be baptized at the 11:00 a.m. service.

Please call or email Beau and make your reservation now and also sign up for one of the Baptismal Preparation Classes.  You must attend one class. The final class at which you can be prepared for Baptism on January 9 is at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday January 8th. Please contact Beau in the office and make your reservations!   773-561-0111 or beau@allsaintschicago.org
Bonnie and Beau are getting serious!
You might have noticed that we've been rearranging our office space.  The main church office has gotten so crowded that we've made some changes.   Bonnie has invited Beau to move in with her.  What does this mean?  What do Susan and Steve think?

The counters will continue to count in the main office.  The copier has moved in with Bonnie and Beau.  (This will clearly be a sign of blessing from above....).  If you need to meet privately with Bonnie during the day the reading room will be available.  However, most of Bonnie's pastoral meetings happen during the evening when Beau is not using the office.  Fran, Wendy, Liz, Jack, Gabriel and Margaret will remain in the main office.  Owen and Izzy will wander between in search of the very best treats.

"And that's what you missed on All the Saints!"
Celebrating Margaret McCamant's 20 years of Music Ministry here at All Saints'
margaretOn the weekend of October 17, it was announced that Margaret McCamant, All Saints' Music Director of nearly 20 years, will be retiring in March of 2011. Over the coming months we will take every opportunity we can to celebrate Margaret's ministry at All Saints' and to give thanks to God for the incredible work that she has done with and among us. Stay tuned to this newsletter and the Sunday bulletin for more information about these opportunities.

If you missed Margaret's beautiful and touching letter announcing her retirement, you can read it here.
