Women, minorities need STEM encouragement
Stephanie L. Kwolek invented Kevlar and serves as a great role model! |
In an article Survey: Women, minorities need STEM encouragement, Maya T. Prabhu, Assistant Editor of eSchool News reports on a survey that polled more than 1,200 female, black, Hispanic, and American Indian chemists and chemical engineers, who also are members of the American Chemical Society, about childhood, academic, and workplace experiences that play a role in attracting and retaining women and underrepresented minorities in STEM fields.
"Almost eight in 10 of our survey respondents say women and underrepresented minorities are missing because they were not encouraged to study STEM fields early on," said Bayer Corp. President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Babe. Click here for the entire article.
WFA's 2011 Girls of Promise™ conferences begin in February. Here's a small list of activities to keep YOUR girls of promise interested in science, technology, engineering and/or math:

In Hot Springs:
In Northwest Arkansas:

All About Philanthropy in Less Than 4 Minutes
Nonprofits in the U.S. generate $1.1 trillion every year, which is more than the entire economies of Saudi Arabia and Sweden combined. "Know Your Sector" is intended as a resource for nonprofit employees, volunteers, and donors to better know the impact of your sector. Click the image or here to watch the video.

Give to WFA Without Touching Your Purse
What if even a fraction of the billions of dollars generated by search engine advertisers was directed towards good causes? That is the concept behind GoodSearch.com, a Yahoo-powered Internet search engine that donates 50% of its revenue, approximately a penny per search, to the charities designated by its users.
"We know there are a lot of people who want to do good but may not have the time or the money to help out." said Ken Ramberg, Co-Founder of GoodSearch and former President of JOBTRAK, the largest online career site for college students (now a division of Monster.com). "GoodSearch's patented technology makes it as easy as possible. We've taken something people do every day -- search the Internet -- and have turned it into doing good." "With so many companies entering the Internet technology space, those with robust intellectual property portfolios will likely be the ones most trusted by their partners and customers. The issuance of patent 7,769,738 will provide our 92,000 non-profit and school partners, and millions of users, a high level of confidence when utilizing GoodSearch's proprietary search engine to help support their favorite cause."

Feminism Today
In response to a blog posting by Gail Collins, columnist for the NY Times, and writer Stacy Schiff a "This is What a Young Feminist Looks Like" blog carnival was organized by Fair and Feminist - a blog ran by a young woman out of College Station/Bryan, TX. All 40+ carnival participants blogged last Friday to share, from their individual points of view what it means to be a feminist today. The Ms. Foundation created this video to accompany thir post. |
Power of the Purse Update
Can you believe that the 2010 Power of the Purse is only 5 weeks away? We're looking forward to an inspiring event that will include: announcing WFA's 2010 Grant Awards, honoring Cathy Cunningham as the Woman of the Year in Philanthropy and hearing from Snow Ledbetter Moen, daughter of late civic leader Brownie Ledbetter, and her brother, Granger Ledbetter, about how growing up with a mother intent on building bridges to bring people together shaped their lives and their characters.
Follow the links above for profiles on our honoree and keynote speaker, as well as information about WFA's grant-making history.

Small Purse. Big Impact.
"Small Purse. Big Impact." is the new tagline to WFA's annual Power of the Purse luncheon, but it's more than that, too. It's the proven theory that small gifts add up to make a meaningful change in our community.
It's the theory behind GoodSearch - that if you use GoodSearch just twice a day, you can be responsible for over $700 in donations to WFA annualy.
And it's the theory behind WFA's Women|360° giving circle. If you donate $10 per month, that monthly gift adds up to an annual gift of $120. Multiplied by just half of the women and men who receive this e-Newsletter, that could be $180,000 every year. Imagine the women and girls who could benefit from that!

Updated WFA Volunteer Program
Over the past year and a half, the Women's Foundation has focused on involving a larger number of women and men in more fulfilling roles to help spread WFA's mission to the furthest corners of our state. Thanks in part to suggestions made in a capstone project by Haley Keenan-Gray - and from Lynnette's long-term vision for the foundation - WFA has established and is expanding local committees around each Girls of Promise conference, regional grant-making committees, and better utilizing event committees. A support structure for program, event and office volunteer roles has been established, too. Online registration for all WFA volunteer roles and committee applications can now be found in one place.

Supporting Women: AAUW
Since its first meeting in 1881, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has been a catalyst for change. When more than a century ago a Harvard physician claimed that higher education jeopardized women's health, AAUW conducted research that proved he was wrong. When the number of female college students grew, AAUW funded fellowships to support them. When girls and boys were treated differently in school, AAUW research put gender bias on the national agenda. When women receive less pay than their male colleagues for the same job, AAUW continues researching, educating, and advocating for equity.
