HELLO and WELCOME to our May edition of Expressive Arts Florida News!
April has been another exciting and full month, and we have seen many of you at various venues. It is difficult to pinpoint a "high point", but the Tibetan Monks Residency at the Van Wezel was most definitely an experience that impacted and inspired us, and the community at large. We had the privilege of partnering with the Van Wezel, bringing community involvement and awareness to the project. Please have a look at the photo gallery in the left hand columm to get a sense of the creation of the Sand Mandala, the community projects, and the exhibit: "Mandala: Tibetan Art and Culture in the Schools", which continues at Expressive Arts Florida through May 15.
This exhibit features art work and poetry created by Sarasota County students, under the direction of the Van Wezel Teaching Artists and the classroom teachers. The opening reception was spectacular! We were joined by the wonderful Dragonfly Cafe Poets, under the direction of Joanna Fox, and we also had live poetry performance/reading by the amazing Glenis Redmond and Van Wezel Teaching Artist Neal Schleifer. It was all great!
We thank all of the teachers and teaching artists, and all our friends and guests who have come to this exhibit; these children and teens deserve to be recognized; their work is quite amazing!
Leslie Lacktman, Vera Furtick, and Judy Levine all deserve a special round of applause! ****************************
At the studio, we also enjoyed working/playing with some of you at the recent Developing Touch Drawings and Touch Drawing and Fabric Workshops. Stay tuned for more of these workshops in the future. If you enjoy Touch Drawing, you may want to join us on the Expressive Arts Florida Touch Drawing Community Page. Deborah Koff-Chapin's recent visit to Sarasota has spurred an even wider interest in the process, and we are committed to offering experiences that help sustain and develop this interest. Please let us know what YOU would like! We now sell Deborah's Soul Cards, books, and CD's at the gallery.
We are transitioning into our summer schedule here at Expressive Arts Florida. Kathleen will be leaving shortly for her British Columbia home, and keeping in touch via newsletter and her online groups: Expressive Arts Facilitators Mentoring and Support and Mandala as Personal Practice (both of these groups currently have openings).
Brand new and exciting summer studios and workshops are coming right up, including Expressive Arts for Self-Awareness with Victoria, and Animal Wisdom, with Victoria and Elizabeth. Keep your creative energy alive by participating!
Touch Drawing, Expressive Arts Community Networking, and 3rd Friday Art Walks will continue. More events will likely be announced in the June newsletter. We are also using the "quieter time" of the summer to plan for our Fall 2010 through Spring 2011 season. Watch for 3 Community Shows next season: Touch Drawing, Expressive Arts in Motion, and Mandala. And, of course, our training institute.
We hope that you will choose to join us during the summer months!

PARTNERSHIPS & COMMUNITY NEWS "HEAR THE CHILDREN": This powerful art work was created in 2007 by the children, parents and staff of the Sexual Abuse Treatment Program of the Child Protection Center. The creation of the piece was facilitated by Victoria Domenichello-Anderson & Kathleen Horne, and was exhibited for over a year at Expressive Arts Florida. Its permanent home is now in the new Child Advocacy Center720 S. Orange Ave., Sarasota. We hope it educates, touches, and inspires many. The piece contains images, words, and messages from those who have been affected by abuse. All monies related to the creation of the art work, as well as the framing and installation costs were donated by the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club Florida Chapter XVIII. The Child Advocacy Center's Grand Opening took place on April 22. It was a moving ceremony reflecting the realization of a long term dream. Congratulations to Hal Hedley, Graci McGillicuddy, Trish McConnell, Dr. Katherine Keeley and the many staff, Board members, and volunteers who have worked so hard on behalf of the children of our community.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Wear a blue ribbon and join the fight against child abuse. Victoria and representatives of the Blue Knights, with the art work, at the opening ceremony.
