Namaste!

What do you want your life to look like?

I remember a dear friend asking me this question about six or seven years ago. It was at a time when I had been through a bit of upheaval, and I remember answering, through a lot of tears, that I was afraid to really wish for anything. We sat in my car, parked on North Street, just around the corner from the blue, and over a long conversation part of what emerged was this deep desire for a yoga community. I don't remember now the timing of it all, but it wasn't long before I wandered into the shell of the newly store-fronted Creamery warehouses and the wheels of karma and destiny began to turn and blue lotus came to be.

I didn't have a clear picture of the details of that community I longed for, but as I step back now and look at what has grown from a small dream, it is with immense gratitude and awe that I see so many aspects of that vague dream realized in full color: a place where people come to be together; to laugh and learn and grow; a place where new friends meet and old friends reunite; a sanctuary when we need to rest and rejuvenate; a reflection pool when we need to see what lies within.

I have tremendous appreciation for all of the teachers who have come and gone from the studio- so many of whom have come and stayed. I am daily thankful for our amazing "peep" staff who makes the day-to-day business at the blue happen with ease. I am eternally grateful to Sandy Scherer, who has been by my side advising, managing, directing, counseling and consoling since long before Day 1. I am inspired by the students who show up week after week, month after month, and year after year. It is all of you who have created the depth and breadth of the community we all enjoy- authentically welcoming newcomers daily.

About a year ago, I re-engaged with this question of what I want my life to look like. And now we begin year 6. This year marks significant changes at the studio: launching our Advanced Training/YTT500 program; expanding class offerings into a new space with our friends at Studio Hargett Pilates; offering our 5th "9 months of transformation" training program starting in September; and biggest and best of all, welcoming our beloved "Cupcake," Kathleen Yount, as full time Studio Manager at blue lotus.

There is most certainly more change ahead, but as I continue to open to the possibility of what I'd like my life to look like, it is with so much sweetness I recognize how very beautiful it looks right now. Many, many thanks to all.

Peace,
Jill

our yoga peeps
meet paul paliyenko
Favorite asana: The one that challenges me the most during any given practice. It reminds me of patience, humility, and grace (though I must admit I do enjoy Happy Baby in Yvonne's Yin practice, because somehow a Dove dark chocolate always winds up resting on my left heel).
Little known fact about me: In 1961, at the age of 4, my family and I sailed on the R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth from NYC to England. We traveled first class and dined in the company of T.S. Eliot and Noel Coward. It's my earliest childhood memory.
Words that describe me: Kind, nurturing, modest – and crazy as a loon.
Who inspires me: My father, because of his “never give up and never give in” attitude despite years of significant health challenges. But perhaps my greatest inspiration is my younger sister, Alexa, who despite her severe lifelong handicaps, is an angel-warrior who embraces every day and every one with unbridled joy and unconditional love.
Favorite yoga music: Wah! -- ever since I saw her perform at Kripalu in summer 2008. Also, I am always deeply moved by the song, “Gayatri.”
Favorite quote: Life is a chance. Love is infinity. Grace is reality.~ Yogi Bhajan
The best thing about being a yoga peep: I enjoy getting to know the members and love to watch their delight and surprise when I remember their names. I also savor the privilege of being alone in the studio after hours and the feeling of being in a sanctuary. It's a feeling I experience every time I cross the threshold into the studio.
Why I love blue lotus: I really appreciate being part of such a wonderful and committed community of practitioners along with the energy that comes from sharing practice with our diverse and exceptional instructors.
I knew I loved yoga when: I was visiting my parents once and my mom commented how calm and serene I had become and asked me why. I attributed it to a regular yoga practice -- plus all but eliminating caffeine from my diet.
When I'll be greeting you: Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m. for Yvonne's Yin practice
learning from the sutras
finding happiness within
Attachment is that which follows identification with pleasurable experiences. Aversion is that which follows identification with painful experiences.~ Yoga Sutras II:7-8, Patanjali

In these Yoga Sutras, Patanjali explains if we expect joy from things outside ourselves, we become attached to those things, which can become a pain-bearing obstacle. Conversely, if we find something that makes us unhappy, we avoid it. These likes and dislikes are impediments on the spiritual path because we lose sight of the fact that happiness is always in us, as the true Self.

The bottom line is we all want to be happy. Yet we need to realize no one can give happiness to us; others simply reflect or distort our own inner happiness. Like the fabled musk deer, which roams the forest in search of the beautiful musk scent, not knowing the wonderful fragrance is given off from the spot on its forehead, we need to realize happiness is already in us.

To explore the sutras on your own, check out The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali with translation and commentary by Sri Swami Satchidananda. Copies are available in the Boo-tique at the blue lotus studio.
