Namaste!

I love teaching yoga. But every once in a while I am reminded of how much more I love being a student of yoga. I'm off this week in a training intensive and have been reminded of so many things that are so easily misplaced, covered up, lost and forgotten in the busy-ness of business and day-to-day life.

Today, our teacher was talking about vichara. The notion behind vichara is this: within every thought you have, there is the seed of desire. And resting inside every seed of desire lies samskara (habitual pattern- the way you always react/think/behave). In one of our meditations, we were asked to try a different technique. Instead of clearing the mind; instead of ignoring the monkeys and their antics, we were encouraged to trace each thought to the seed. Aren't you curious about where the mind goes when it's not doing your bidding? And further, why it's going there?

There is a growing trend in our yoga culture of dismissing our minds, our desires, our dissatisfaction-- even our unhappiness. And while it is true that sometimes our unhappiness is caused by unrealistic hopes and unreasonable expectations, not not all of our thoughts and not all of our unhappiness comes from the lower mind. Have you considered that nagging nudge might just be coming from your higher mind- the voice of the soul compelling you to a different choice, a better life, greater contentment?

Our practice, in its many forms, is about attending to the Self. What is happening in there, when we stop everything else we are doing and pay attention? Are you using your practice to attend to all of yourself, or just the bits you like? Hmmm.

Peace,
Jill

your questions about yoga
Why is savasana (corpse pose) at the end of class so important? Do I really need to stay to the end?

Savasana, the final pose of a yoga practice, is considered by many to be perhaps more important than any other aspect or pose of the class. It gives your body time to process the practice, let go, and prepare to re-enter the world off your mat.

In savasana, we release any breathing technique and allow the breath to move through its natural pattern. As the breath moves naturally, the mind settles; and when the mind settles, the body relaxes and opens. With the incredibly busy and hectic lives most of us lead, it’s important to take time to assimilate the soothing benefits accrued during practice and experience true relaxation.

Beyond the mind/body benefits, staying through savasana offers respect and reverence for your fellow yogis. If you’ve ever been in savasana and heard students packing up, moving about, and opening and closing doors, you know just how jarring disturbances during savasana can be.

So, the next time you are tempted to roll up your mat and rush out of class, stop. Take the few extra minutes to quiet your mind and relax. Your body, your mind, your fellow yogis and everyone else you come into contact with that day will be forever grateful.

a word about props
a place for everything . . .
We're ordering new props in the near future (hooray!), but for now we've got some new signs to remind everyone how props should be returned to the shelves (blanket fringes face in; bolster handles face out).

Just like respecting each other's space and practice before, during, and after class, returning props to the shelves in an orderly way shows a little bit of love for your teacher, the students who will be using the props after you, and the studio where you just got some good yoga. Thank you for what you contribute to our space and our community!
