Namaste!
What does it mean to take care of yourself? Starting at the physical level, we could talk about eating healthy foods, getting plenty of fresh air and exercise, and sleeping and resting well. Peeling another layer away, are the notions around fulfilling work, positive mental challenges to stay sharp, nurturing, supportive relationships and healthy boundaries. Further, we could consider spiritual growth and the process of self-inquiry as part of self-care. In short: caring for yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Sounds like a tall order. Unfortunately, there's not a one-size-fits-all prescription for taking care of yourself. And what's even more challenging is that the recipe for today might not suit you two months or years down the road. So it seems to me a worthy question-or series of questions- to keep on the table, for regular review.
Even the easy ones can be more challenging than they appear: how are your diet/exercise/sleep habits? When you consider these answers, you might also take into consideration how you treat yourself in these areas: is food a punishment/reward system? Is your diet so tightly controlled and stringent that you've lost the pleasure of eating? Are meals savored, or rushed? Same for exercise: do you enjoy the activities you engage in, or are they just items on the to-do list? Where is the line between pushing yourself in a healthy way and hurting yourself? Are you sleeping well because you fall into bed at night completely exhausted, because you don't take enough time to just rest during your days? What about work and relationships? How do you feel about saying no, when there's really too much on your plate already? How are you doing with asking for help when you need it? Are you honest and open in your relationships-- and with yourself about those relationships? Do you make enough time for yourself, as well as with all of the people you love? And finally, how are you cultivating the inner soil? A healthy body is great. We all hope to keep a sound mind. But what you are doing, on a daily basis, to connect with something greater than yourself-- whatever that means to you. How are you filling up and what are you giving back? Ultimately, this is where true and lasting fulfillment is found. As you look at some of those questions, consider that taking care of yourself is just making choices that lead to a better quality of life, happiness, simplicity, ease, grace. Make a good choice for yourself today. Just one. And then tomorrow is another day.
Peace,
Jill
learning from the sutras |
without identifiers, we are all the same
Back in March, we introduced you to the yoga sutras, the ancient yogic text that explains yoga in a systematic way. While much of what we tend to think of as yoga is the physical practice, or asana, the sutras focus more on the truly significant aspect of yoga: understanding and techniques for mastery over the mind.
Today, we explore Yoga Sutra 1.4: At other times, the Self appears to assume the forms of the mental modifications.
Without identifications, who are you? If you could not say, “I am a man,” “I am a mother,” “I am wealthy,” “I am short/tall,” “I am black/white,” or claim any other identifier, then who would you be? As Patanjali teaches, if you detach yourself completely from all things by which you have identified yourself, then you would see we are all the same.
Whether we call it spirit or Self or energy, we are all different versions of the same energy. When you calm your mind, you see there is unity among all things. That is the real Yogic life. With this experience of universal unity, we can truly begin to love our neighbors as our own Self.
This is why yoga is a practice of self-reformation, self-control and self-adjustment. Through the process, we see a new world -- a happy, harmonious world.
To explore the sutras on your own, check out The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali with translation and commentary by Sri Swami Satchidananda. Copies are available in the Boo-tique at the blue lotus studio.

Favorite Asana: It depends on my mood. Ultimate bliss: a full, luxurious pigeon. Ultimate play: handstand hands down. Ultimate work: a killer PowerPoint presentation. Little Known Fact About Me: As a child, I was torn between being a lawyer or an astronaut. Neither worked out. Words That Describe My Class: Fast-paced and detail oriented: learn the poses and create depth of experience through applying Anusara’s Universal Principles of Alignment. I want to push the boundaries of the practice in each moment – ultimate strength, flexibility, ease and inspiration. And, it’s fun. I want class to be fun -- I think a rich life of spiritual and physical depth requires a relaxed sense of humor. Who Inspires Me: My fiancee, Leah. My mom and dad, because they’re awesome. And my teacher, Sally Kempton – her rich, unrelenting love all these years has started to make a wee bit of difference. Favorite yoga music: Snoop Dogg, when I’m practicing solo and in class when Jill isn’t around. The Killers and Jay-Z are a strong seconds. Air for a mellow pigeon pose. Krishna Das, Shantala or Jai Uttal rocks Savasana. Favorite yoga book: Lately, Meditation for the Love of It, by teacher Sally. A classic, Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar. Favorite Quote: The last line of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” Why I love blue lotus: I initially liked the space – it’s pretty and it feels good – and I really enjoyed Jill’s class. Her interesting sequencing, humor and depth are delightful. Now that I’ve been around for a few months, I really enjoy everyone. blue lotus has a great community. And there are some amazing people, like Jean -- she comes to my class and works like crazy, which is truly inspiring. I knew I loved yoga when: I took my first class and couldn’t touch my toes, and yet I left feeling so good. Love at first asana sort of thing.
