Namaste!
I just returned to my hotel after completing day four of a five day training intensive. It's been day after day of "drinking from a fire hose." I hear my own words tumble in the back of my head, "trust that you are hearing exactly what you need to hear, and will remember just want you need to remember." It's a wealth of new material and new practices in a place I've never been-- literally and figuratively.
Over time I will integrate some of these teachings into my own practice and they will filter eventually into classes. Perhaps. But in the midst of all the unfamiliar, I was reminded of a lovely gem of truth I know in my heart, but haven't heard for a while. There are many practices, many teachings and seemingly unlimited paths through this forest of life. But one of the ones that appears consistently from one tradition to the next is about community.
You can do asana, meditation, pranayama, bandha, mudra, seva, japa, prayer, contemplation, journaling, levitating all the hours of the day. But if you aren't holed up in a cave in the Himalaya, if you are living in this world, there is one essential element to your progress on this path. Sangha-- community. We can't do it alone. I repeat: we cannot do it alone.
So in this week where we celebrate four years since we opened the door for classes, I am on beyond grateful that the premise on which the studio was founded has far surpassed any dream I had for our little urban sanctuary. Because while it is filled with love, good intentions and great yoga, what makes it all work-- what makes it live and thrive (and in turn helps us to live and thrive) is true community. Thank you for being a part of making our corner of the world a little better through your active participation in our sangha. I hope you'll be able to join us for events this weekend!
Peace,
Jill
blueversary bash . . . celebrate yoga! |
yoga by-donation Feb 4 - 6 benefits at-risk girls
Anniversaries and birthdays are special occasions, mostly because they give us an opportunity to celebrate with those we love and who mean so much to our lives. That's how we feel about our 4th blueversary bash this coming weekend!
We're looking forward to celebrating with friends old and new, as we offer a weekend of yoga classes by-donation to benefit the girls at CORRAL.
CORRAL gives troubled girls one-on-one mentoring, weekly tutoring, Equine Assisted Learning, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and riding lessons, as well as responsibilities in the barn and caring for the horses, most of whom are rescues themselves. All of this provides the girls with the tools necessary to overcome the challenges they face.
Online donations as well as those made in the studio, will be given to CORRAL to support one girl for an entire year. Our goal is to raise $5,000. Each donation also earns you a ticket for a chance to win wonderful prizes donated by local businesses. Check out the event flyer for a complete listing of class dates and times.
While all classes are by-donation, pre-registration is encouraged (but not required) to secure your mat space.

Favorite Asanas: Ardha chandrasana (half-moon), sirsasana (headstand, old-school style), parivrtta trikonasana (revolved triangle), jathara parivrtti (supine belly twist, yum yum) Little Known Fact About Me: I am actually a ninja, traveling in disguise in the body of a cupcake. Words That Describe My Class: Nutritious and delicious. A grounded space in which students are invited to explore, nurture, and respect their unique bodies and breathing. Who Inspires Me: The powerful contentment I feel every time I simmer down long enough to notice the marvels and mysteries and unbreakable connections among all living things and the world around us. Oh, and also the moon, I really like the moon. I got a whole thing going on with the moon. She is always changing, but always constant too. Favorite yoga music: Jaia Ganesha by Dum Dum Project, Gopinatha by Rasa, Puja by Krishna Das, Rama by EarthRise SoundSystem, and Prayer for Kuan Yin by Donna DeLory are examples of music that's likely to land on my playlists. Sometimes Michael Franti, Peter Bjorn & John, Joss Stone, and John Lennon do too. Favorite yoga book: If I could staple together Donna Farhi's Bringing Yoga to Life with Rolf Gates's Meditations from the Mat and stitch in an anatomy DVD from the Breathing Project, I'd be a happy girl. Favorite Quote: Horatio: O day and night, but this is wondrous strange! Hamlet: Then as a stranger, give it welcome. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. -- William Shakespeare; and A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men. -- Willy Wonka (sung by Gene Wilder) Why I love blue lotus: blue lotus really does strive to embody "yoga for real life." It makes space both for true community and for developing the relationship you have with yourself. Also, our potlucks are damn tasty. I knew I loved yoga when: I fell in love with yoga in 1999, in a drooling savasana on the cheaply carpeted living room floor of my tiny cinderblock apartment in Birmingham, Alabama, to the soundtrack of tornado sirens and the whirring of my decrepit VCR. Over the next seven years it would show up every once in a while to rescue me from bouts of magical thinking, and in 2006 I finally flopped headlong into its loving arms. I have clung to it for dear life ever since.
My Classes: Vinyasa Level 1 11:00 am - Noon, Saturdays
Early Bird Yoga 6:30-7:30 am, every third Thursday

a penny for your thoughts |
As we begin our 5th year of yoga community at the blue, we wanted to pause for a moment to ask for your thoughts about the studio. We love the feedback we receive daily from all who are wiling to share. But we also think a survey every once in a while will give you the opportunity to give us some specific feedback and provides you with an open, anonymous way to share what you like and perhaps would like to see done a bit differently.
Please take a moment (we promise! it's just 10 easy questions) to complete our online survey.
Thank you for your time and most of all for your presence at the blue.
